The Issue Arena of a Corporate Social Responsibility Crisis : The Volkswagen Case in Twitter

2016

This paper explores the online debate in a corporate social responsibility crisis, where multiple actors communicate through social media, each representing different interests and views pertaining to the crisis. The study utilizes Twitter data relating to the recent case of the falsified Volkswagen diesel emissions that became public in 2015. To better understand the online interaction, use is made of issue arena theory and insights on CSR crises. The focus is on capturing the issue as it evolved over time, the actors and sentiments expressed, and the responses of the organization. The findings show that after the case became public, the emissions issue received massive attention in Twitte…

Creatinine and NT-ProBNP levels could predict the length of hospital stay of patients with decompensated heart failure.

2021

Heart failure (HF) is a clinical syndrome that causes high morbidity and mortality with a high number of admissions and sometimes prolonged admissions. This study aimed at assessing whether parameters detected during the first 24 h of admission may predict a prolonged hospital stay in patients admitted to hospital for decompensated HF.From January 2016 to December 2019, 2359 admissions of decompensated HF were recorded. In-hospital transfers,Univariate differences were found at admission in NT-ProBNP, creatinine, history of cardiac surgery, smoking and alcoholism, left and right ventricular ejection fraction, systolic blood pressure and heart rate. The ROC analysis showed significant areas …

Assessing transfusion practice in elective surgical patients: a baseline audit

2019

Background Externally generated hospital benchmarking data indicated that the blood transfusion rate within elective surgical orthopaedic and gastrointestinal patients at a metropolitan, tertiary healthcare facility was higher than comparable Australian hospitals. An investigation of transfusion practices was undertaken with the aim of understanding the reasons contributing to this higher incidence. Study Methods A chart audit was undertaken of every major, elective, surgical orthopaedic and gastrointestinal patient who received a blood transfusion between July and December 2017. The audit aimed to ascertain whether patients were screened and treated for preoperative anaemia and measure the…

In-hospital outcomes of catheter-directed thrombolysis in patients with pulmonary embolism.

2020

AbstractAimsCatheter-directed treatment of acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is technically advancing. Recent guidelines acknowledge this treatment option for patients with overt or imminent haemodynamic decompensation, particularly when systemic thrombolysis is contraindicated. We investigated patients with PE who underwent catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) in the German nationwide inpatient cohort. Methods and resultsData from hospitalizations with PE (International Classification of Disease code I26) between 2005 and 2016 were collected by the Federal Office of Statistics in Germany. Patients with PE who underwent CDT (OPS 8-838.60 or OPS code 8-83b.j) were compared with patients receiving…

Effectiveness of interferon alfa on incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma and decompensation in cirrhosis type C

1997

Background/Aims: The role of interferon alfa treatment in improving morbidity endpoints in patients with chronic hepatitis C infection is currently under debate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of interferon in preventing hepatocellular carcinoma and decompensation in cirrhosis type C. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was carried out on 329 consecutive Caucasian patients with cirrhosis followed for a mean period of 5 years at seven tertiary care university hospitals. Inclusion criteria were biopsy-proven cirrhosis, anti-HCV positivity, abnormal serum aminotransferase levels and absence of complications of cirrhosis. Results: The yearly incidence of hepatocellula…

Liver collagen proportionate area predicts decompensation in patients with recurrent hepatitis C virus cirrhosis after liver transplantation

2012

Background and Aims:  Current histological scoring systems do not subclassify cirrhosis. Computer-assisted digital image analysis (DIA) of Sirius Red-stained sections measures fibrosis morphologically producing a fibrosis ratio (collagen proportionate area [CPA]). CPA could have prognostic value within a disease stage, such as cirrhosis. The aim of the present study was to evaluate CPA in patients with recurrent hepatitis C virus (HCV) allograft cirrhosis and assess its relationship with hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG). Methods:  In 121 consecutively-transplanted HCV patients with HVPG, measured contemporaneously with transjugular liver biopsies, 65 had Ishak stage 5 or 6 disease (4…

PNPLA3 Rs738409 C>G Variant Predicts Liver-Related Outcomes in Patients with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

2019

Background: Patients with NAFLD are at higher risk of developing liver-related complications -liver decompensation(LD) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), including death-. A single nucleotide polymorphism in PNPLA3 gene is associated with a higher prevalence of liver damage and HCC, but prospective date are not available. We aimed to assess whether the common rs738409 variant in PNPLA3 gene can predict the occurrence of liver-related events and death in a large cohort of NAFLD patients.   Methods: We considered 471 consecutive Italian individuals with histological diagnosis of NAFLD or clinical diagnosis of compensated NAFLD-related cirrhosis, prospectively followed for at least 6 months. …
