Student experiences of critical multilingual and intercultural communication competence assessment in higher education

In this chapter, we present multilingual and intercultural communication competence (MICC) as a situational and contextual process. The aim of this qualitative, empirical study is to understand the students’ perceptions of assessing MICC as a holistic phenomenon that does not represent an ethnocentric world view and considers the role of language use in interaction. We look at assessing MICC as a process of giving and receiving feedback rather than as a summative assessment. The data consist of 74 texts on assessments written by university students. In crisis management, cooperation within the response network is seen as crucial. Usually, this network refers to authorities and nongovernmental organizations, such as the Red Cross. However, the authors argue that to improve societal resilience one should take a broader overview of the actors involved in crisis preparedness and mitigation, and also include the public. The effectiveness of leadership development in the military context from a gender viewpoint

In this case study, leadership development is investigated from the viewpoint of women in a military context. In particular, the effectiveness of a leadership development program in a specific context, namely the Finnish Defence Forces, is explored. The program being studied is unique because it is concerned with developing volunteers, not professional soldiers. A longitudinal, interview-based study of the topic was conducted with women who had participated in the program. The data consists of 45 open-ended interviews with 15 women. Projekts “Skola 2030” pakāpeniski ievieš pārmaiņas Latvijas izglītības sistēmā, kompetenču izglītībai esot vienai no šīm izmaiņām. No skolotājiem tiek gaidīts, ka viņi iemācīs skolēniem astoņas mūžizglītības galvenās pamatprasmes, tomēr dažas no tām, piemēram, pašiniciatīva un uzņēmējdarbība, ir grūtāk attīstāmas. Šis atsevišķā gadījuma pētījums tāpēc tika veidots, lai izpētītu, vai projekti var tikti izmantoti skolēnu pašiniciatīvas uzlabošanai angļu valodas stundās piektajās klasēs. Tutkielman tarkoituksena oli selvittää englanninopettajien käsityksiä pragmaattisen kompetenssin opettamisesta. Tutkielmassa tutkittiin haastattelujen avulla opettajien ajatuksia pragmaattisen kompetenssin luonteesta, oppijan ominaisuuksista sekä opettajan roolista oppijan pragmaattisen kompetenssin saavuttamisessa. Lisäksi haluttiin selvittää opetetaanko pragmaattisia periaatteita luokassa, ja mitä menetelmiä käyttäen. Lopuksi haastateltavilta kysyttiin heidän mielipiteitään pragmaattisen kompetenssin arvioimisesta. Käsitykset kielen oppimisesta ja opettamisesta ovat muuttuneet kielen rakenteita korostavista näkemyksistä yhä enemmän kommunikatiivisiksi (Abrahamsson 2009). Tämän tutkielman lähtökohtana onkin havainnoida näiden muuttuvien kielikäsitysten heijastumista kielenopettajaopiskelijoiden näkemyksissä selvittämällä, mitä kielitaidon osa-alueita he pitävät kaikista tärkeimpinä. Tutkielma keskittyy toisaalta oppiainekohtaiseen aineenhallintaan, minkä tarkoitus on kartoittaa opiskelijoiden valmiuksia kohdata tulevan työelämän haasteet.
