Mediterranean visceral leishmaniasis in immunocompetent children. Report of two cases relapsed after specific therapy
2004
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is endemic in areas bordering the Mediterranean Sea (Spain, Italy, France, Greece, Morocco, Tunisia) where it is caused by Leishmania infantum and is transmitted by the bite of a hematophagous sandfly belonging to Phlebotomus spp.; the dog constitutes the main reservoir of infection. Two cases of VL in immunocompetent children are described. Both patients lived in endemic areas for leishmaniasis (Sicily) and at admission were febrile, pale and had splenomegaly. In both patients anti-leishmania antibodies were present and a definitive diagnosis was confirmed by demonstration of leishmania parasites by microscopy or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the bone marro…

Cognition in Interaction : Challenges in Assessing Persons with Sensory and Multiple disabilities
2021
This article reports a qualitative study of cognitive assessments of three teenagers with sensory and multiple disabilities, including moderate to profound developmental disability. The aim was to evaluate the possibilities for adapting standardized tests and the implementation of interactional partnership in assessment. Cognitive assessments were made with an individually-adapted psychological assessment tool, the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development. The assessment situations were video-recorded and analyzed based on sociocultural theories of early interaction, dynamic assessment, and the bodily-tactile modality of cognition. The results showed that the requirements for assessm…
Cell therapy medicinal product regulatory framework in Europe and its application for MSC-based therapy development
2012
Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs), including cell therapy products, form a new class of medicines in the European Union. Since the ATMPs are at the forefront of scientific innovation in medicine, specific regulatory framework has been developed for these medicines and implemented from 2009. The Committee for Advanced Therapies (CAT) has been established at the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for centralized classification, certification and evaluation procedures, and other ATMP-related tasks. Guidance documents, initiatives, and interaction platforms are available to make the new framework more accessible for small- and medium-sized enterprises, academia, hospitals, and foundation…
Herpes Simplex Esophagitis in Immunocompetent Host: A Case Report

The patients was treated with high dose of protonpump inhibitor, sucralfate, and acyclovir, orally, with rapid resolution of symptoms. Discussion. HSV type I is the second most common cause of infectious esophagi…
Clinical meaning of incompetent perforators in the setting of post-thrombotic syndrome commentary
2015
In this issue of Phlebological Review Zolotukhin et al. [1] present the results of their study on recurrence of venous leg ulcers in post-thrombotic patients after endovenous laser ablation of incompetent lower leg perforators. They have found that not only the recurrence rate of these perforators was very high, but also that the procedure did not reduce the ulcer recurrence. This lack of clinical efficacy in terms of recurrence was different from the results of the well-known ESCHAR study [2]. In the ESCHAR study surgical ablation of incompetent superficial veins resulted in less frequent recurrences. From a hemodynamic and pathophysiological point of view a thermal ablation (such as laser…
Concepto y estructura de las potestades jurídicas
2010
