Emerging Economies’ Institutional Quality and International Competitiveness: A PLS-SEM Approach

2021

The home country’s institutional framework determines the capacity to compete in the global arena. This paper discusses the linkage between institutional quality (IQ) and international competitiveness (IC). We measured institutions’ quality in emerging economies through the use of selected indicators between 2007–2017. To evaluate the proposed IQ constructs and their relationship with IC, we applied partial least squares – structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) analysis. The model outcomes suggest that political and lack of systemic conditions have a significant and negative effect on international competitiveness, while science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) resource condi…

Hotel chain performance: a gravity-DEA approach

2011

Performance in business management can be measured in terms of competitiveness and efficiency. Generally speaking, competitiveness is a comparative concept of the ability of a firm, sub-sector or country to sell and supply goods and/or services in a given market, as measured by its market share. Particularly in competitive markets, efficiency plays a key role in determining this ability but it is not, by itself, sufficient. Indeed, while competitiveness has more to do with “pursuing the correct strategy” towards the conservation and/or increase of the market share, operational efficiency is mainly a measure of how well the firm, sub-sector or country under study processes inputs to achieve …

The impact of globalization on regional development and competitiveness: cases of selected regions

2019

International audience; The objective of this study is to conduct an analysis of regional development and competitiveness in the EU and Latvia under current conditions of economic globalization. Institutions, firms and environment in a framework of innovation

2017

The aim of the paper is the analysis of innovation and institution as the key elements for reaching a higher social welfare and environmental quality. To determine a social optimum or a Pareto improvement, we consider the interaction between institution and firm in the short and in the medium/long run. Using a static comparative analysis, the interaction of these two agents, institution and market, is examined. Within the market an entrant and an incumbent firm are present, where the entrant firm represents the firm who radically innovates. Even if in the short run results show that the market alone is able to realize a Pareto improvement, however, whenever institution intervenes through an…

HOME COUNTRY INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTS ON INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS

2023
