Temporal Courses in EEG Theta and Alpha Activity in the Dynamic Health Qigong Techniques Wu Qin Xi and Liu Zi Jue

2018

Health Qigong is a common technique of Traditional Chinese Medicine applied to strengthen mental and physical health. Several studies report increases in EEG theta and alpha activity after meditative Qigong techniques indicating a relaxed state of mind. To date, little is known on the effects of dynamic Health Qigong techniques that comprise bodily movements on brain activity. In the current study, we compared effects of two dynamic Health Qigong techniques on EEG brain activity. Subjects performed the techniques Wu Qin Xi (five animals play) and Liu Zi Jue (six healing sounds) in a within-subjects design. Eyes-open and eyes-closed resting EEG was recorded before and immediately after each …

Management of demolition phases and related waste, in a building renovation project near Salerno, Italy

2020

Compliance with recent environmental regulations, the demolition phase, within the building replacement process, plays a decisive role, in terms of execution and management methods. The contribution addresses the problems related to the management of the site, in compliance with regulatory requirements for selective demolition and disposal of waste materials. Possible organisational and procedural solutions were investigated with particular reference to the phases of selective demolition (in compliance with Minimum Environmental Criteria), excavation, handling, treatment, recycling, and disposal of waste materials.

Cyclic AMP-mediated upregulation of the expression of neuronal NO synthase in human A673 neuroepithelioma cells results in a decrease in the level of…

2004

The expression level of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) can vary depending on the (patho)physiological conditions. Here we document a marked induction of nNOS mRNA, protein, and total NO production in response to dibutyryl cyclic AMP (db-cAMP) in human A673 neuroepithelial cells. However, the upregulation of nNOS was associated with a decreased level of production of bioactive NO and by an increase in the level of generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS production could be prevented by the NOS inhibitor L-NAME, suggesting nNOS itself is involved in ROS generation. Sepiapterin supplementation of db-cAMP-treated A673 cells could restore full bioactive NO production, most likely…

Antigen-Driven T-Cell Selection in Patients with Cervical Cancer as Evidenced by T-Cell Receptor Analysis and Recognition of Autologous Tumor

2002

ABSTRACTWe characterized the T-cell receptor (TCR) repertoire in freshly harvested tumor lesions, in short-term-expanded CD4+tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) as well as in CD4+and CD8+peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) from three patients with cervical cancer. Skewing of the T-cell repertoire as defined by measuring the length of the complementarity-determining region 3 (CDR3) of the TCR VA and VB chains was observed in CD8+PBL, in freshly harvested tumor tissue, as well as in CD4+TIL. Comparative analysis of the TCR repertoire revealed unique monoclonal TCR transcripts within the tumor lesion which were not present in PBL, suggesting selection of TCR clonotypes due to antigenic stimula…

Cytokine profile, HLA restriction and TCR sequence analysis of human CD4+ T clones specific for an immunodominant epitope of Mycobacterium tuberculos…

2003

SUMMARY The identification of immunodominant and universal mycobacterial peptides could be applied to vaccine design and have an employment as diagnostic reagents. In this paper we have investigated the fine specificity, clonal composition and HLA class II restriction of CD4+ T cell clones specific for an immunodominant epitope spanning amino acids 91–110 of the 16-kDa protein of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Twenty-one of the tested 28 clones had a Th1 profile, while seven clones had a Th0 profile. None of the clones had a Th2 profile. While the TCR AV gene usage of the clones was heterogeneous, a dominant TCR BV2 gene family was used by 18 of the 28 clones. The CDR3 regions of BV2+ T cell c…

Screening for natural and derived bio-active compounds in preclinical and clinical studies: One of the frontlines of fighting the coronaviruses pande…

2020

Background Starting December 2019, mankind faced an unprecedented enemy, the COVID-19 virus. The world convened in international efforts, experiences and technologies in order to fight the emerging pandemic. Isolation, hygiene measure, diagnosis, and treatment are the most efficient ways of prevention and intervention nowadays. The health organizations and global care systems screened the available resources and offered recommendations of approved and proposed medications. However, the search for a specific selective therapy or vaccine against COVID-19 remains a challenge. Methods A literature search was performed for the screening of natural and derived bio-active compounds which showed po…

Two-Armed Activation of Bone Mineral Deposition by the Flavones Baicalin and Baicalein, Encapsulated in Polyphosphate Microparticles

2017

In this study, we investigated the effect of the two flavonoids, baicalin (baicalein 7-O-[Formula: see text]- d-glucuronic acid) and its aglycone, baicalein (5,6,7-trihydroxyflavone), after encapsulation into amorphous calcium polyphosphate (Ca-polyP) microparticles on mineralization of primary human osteoblasts (phOSB). Both flavonoids, which come from root extracts of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and are nontoxic in cells up to a concentration of 3[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/ml. The morphogenetically active, energy-rich Ca-polyP particles with a stoichiometric P:Ca ratio of 1:2 are degraded by cellular alkaline phosphatase (ALP) to…

Sequence and evolution of a hexamerin from the ant Camponotus festinatus.

2000

In the ant Camponotus festinatus, two different hexamerins accumulate stage-specifically during the late larval period and at various times in adults. These hexamerins serve as storage proteins and play important roles in brood nourishment and colony founding. We report an analysis of the cDNA sequence of C. festinatus hexamerin 2 (CfeHex2). The native protein contains 732 amino acids, which are moderately enriched in aromatic amino acids, aspartate and asparagine. Phylogenetic analyses show a close relationship of CfeHex2 to a putative toxin of the braconid wasp, Bracon hebetor. The divergence of Formicidae and Braconidae hexamerins was calculated to have begun 187 MYA, an estimate consist…
