Recurrent liver metastases of colorectal carcinoma are frequent. The repeat hepatectomy is superior to other therapeutic options. In about 20 % of patients with recurrent liver metastases a complete resection (R 0) is possible. The morbidity of repeat hepatectomy is similar to that of first hepatectomy. The 5-year survival rate after repeat hepatectomy ranges between 30 and 40 %. Often in the follow-up additional operations become necessary for extrahepatic recurrencies. For determination of the optimal therapy an interdisciplinary approach must be chosen.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly aggressive primary brain tumor. Currently, the suggested line of action is the surgical resection followed by radiotherapy and treatment with the adjuvant temozolomide (TMZ), a DNA alkylating agent. However, the ability of tumor cells to deeply infiltrate the surrounding tissue makes complete resection quite impossible, and in consequence, the probability of tumor recurrence is high, and the prognosis is not positive. The family of operators on a pip-space V is endowed with two, possibly different, partial multiplications, where partial means that the multiplication is not defined for any pair A,B of elements of Op(V) but only for certain couples. The two multiplications, to be called strong and weak, give rise to two different structures that coincide in certain situations. In this chapter we will discuss first the structure of Op(V) as partial *-algebra in the sense of [AIT02] and then the possibility of representing an abstract partial *-algebra into Op(V).

Genomic investigation of a legionellosis outbreak in a persistently colonized hotel

Objectives: A long-lasting legionellosis outbreak was reported between November 2011 and July 2012 in a hotel in Calpe (Spain) affecting 44 patients including six deaths. Intensive epidemiological and microbiological investigations were performed in order to detect the reservoirs. Methods: Clinical and environmental samples were tested for the presence and genetic characterization of Legionella pneumophila. Six of the isolates were subjected to whole-genome sequencing. Results: Sequencing of 14 clinical and 260 environmental samples revealed sequence type (ST) 23 as the main responsible strain for the infections. M-bornologies on L-valued Sets

We develop an approach to the concept of bornology in the framework of many-valued mathematical structures. It is based on the introduced concept of an M-bornology on an L-valued set (X, E), or an LM-bornology for short; here L is an iccl-monoid, M is a completely distributive lattice and \(E: X\times X \rightarrow L\) is an L-valued equality on the set X. We develop the basics of the theory of LM-bornological spaces and initiate the study of the category of LM-bornological spaces and appropriately defined bounded “mappings” of such spaces.

Preoperative identification of the ideal surgical approach as well as the precise intraoperative implementation of the surgical plan are of critical importance for successful surgery.
