Step-by-Step Control of the Dynamics of a Superconducting QED-like System

2007

We discuss the modus operandi of a theoretical scalable coupling scheme to control step by step the time evolution of a pair of flux qubits embedded in a lossy resonant cavity. The sequential interaction of each qubit with the quantized cavity mode is controlled by externally applied magnetic fluxes. Our analysis indicates that indirect qubit-qubit interactions, with the electromagnetic mode acting as a data bus, can be selectively performed and exploited both for the implementation of entangling gates and for the generation of states with a priori known characteristics.

Phase transformation kinetics in d-dimensional grains-containing systems: diffusion-type model

1998

Abstract An analytical approach to the phase transformation in d-dimensional grains-containing complex systems is offered. It is based on considering the mechanism of surface material exchange among neighbouring grains as the so-called state-dependent diffusion process, where the diffusion function is related to the magnitude of the grain boundary. The approach proposed deals with the kinetics of that ensemble under circumstances of a volume increase of the new phase or microstructure. Probabilistic characteristics of the process are derived and analyzed. A comparison with 2D modelling of similar kind is presented for the 3D case, and some possible practical realizations of the situation un…

Generation of Entangled Two-Photon Binomial States in Two Spatially Separate Cavities

2006

We propose a conditional scheme to generate entangled two-photon generalized binomial states inside two separate single-mode high-Q cavities. This scheme requires that the two cavities are initially prepared in entangled one-photon generalized binomial states and exploits the passage of two appropriately prepared two-level atoms one in each cavity. The measurement of the ground state of both atoms is finally required when they exit the cavities. We also give a brief evaluation of the experimental feasibility of the scheme.

Hitting Time Distributions in Financial Markets

2006

We analyze the hitting time distributions of stock price returns in different time windows, characterized by different levels of noise present in the market. The study has been performed on two sets of data from US markets. The first one is composed by daily price of 1071 stocks trade for the 12-year period 1987-1998, the second one is composed by high frequency data for 100 stocks for the 4-year period 1995-1998. We compare the probability distribution obtained by our empirical analysis with those obtained from different models for stock market evolution. Specifically by focusing on the statistical properties of the hitting times to reach a barrier or a given threshold, we compare the prob…

Structure and evolution of a European Parliament via a network and correlation analysis

2016

We present a study of the network of relationships among elected members of the Finnish parliament, based on a quantitative analysis of initiative co-signatures, and its evolution over 16 years. To understand the structure of the parliament, we constructed a statistically validated network of members, based on the similarity between the patterns of initiatives they signed. We looked for communities within the network and characterized them in terms of members' attributes, such as electoral district and party. To gain insight on the nested structure of communities, we constructed a hierarchical tree of members from the correlation matrix. Afterwards, we studied parliament dynamics yearly, wi…

Implementability of Liouville Evolution, Koopman and Banach-Lamperti Theorems in Classical and Quantum Dynamics

2002

We extend the concept of implementability of semigroups of evolution operators associated with dynamical systems to quantum case. We show that such an extension can be properly formulated in terms of Jordan morphisms and isometries on non-commutative Lp spaces. We focus our attention on a non-commutative analog of the Banach-Lamperti theorem.

n-cluster models in a transverse magnetic field

2017

In this paper we analize a family of one dimensional fully analytically solvable models, named the n-cluster models in a transverse magnetic field, in which a many-body cluster interaction competes with a uniform transverse magnetic field. These models, independently by the cluster size n + 2, exibit a quantum phase transition, that separates a paramagnetic phase from a cluster one, that corresponds to a nematic ordered phase or a symmetry-protected topological ordered phase for even or odd n respectively. Due to the symmetries of the spin correlation functions, we prove that these models have no genuine n+2-partite entanglement. On the contrary, a non vanishing concurrence arises between s…

Covariance and correlation estimators in bipartite complex systems with a double heterogeneity

2019

Complex bipartite systems are studied in Biology, Physics, Economics, and Social Sciences, and they can suitably be described as bipartite networks. The heterogeneity of elements in those systems makes it very difficult to perform a statistical analysis of similarity starting from empirical data. Though binary Pearson's correlation coefficient has proved effective to investigate the similarity structure of some real-world bipartite networks, here we show that both the usual sample covariance and correlation coefficient are affected by a bias, which is due to the aforementioned heterogeneity. Such a bias affects real bipartite systems, and, for example, we report its effects on empirical dat…

Opposing Forces of Social Attraction and Social Avoidance Drive Network Modularity

2020

SUMMARY: How interactions between individuals contribute to the emergence of complex societies is a major question in biology. Nonetheless, little remains known about how simple rules of social attraction (e.g. to information) and social avoidance (e.g. of disease) interact to shape sociality. We developed an individual-based model where individuals choose with whom to interact depending on the status of group mates (informed and/or infected). Statistical models indicate that the emergence of social structure depends on the cost/benefit trade-offs underlying the system. Critically, pressures that optimize social relationships – i.e. minimize risky connections while favouring those that maxi…

Modular organization in the reductive evolution of protein-protein interaction networks

2006

Analysis of the reduction in genome size of Buchnera aphidicola from its common ancestor E. coli shows that the organization of networks into modules is the property that seems to be directly related with the evolutionary process of genome reduction.
