Tissue hypoxia in complex regional pain syndrome.
2003
Untreated complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) may progress from acute stages with increased hair and nail growth in the affected limb to chronic stages with atrophy of the skin, muscles and bones. The aim of this study was to investigate whether tissue hypoxia could be one mechanism responsible for this late CRPS symptoms. Nineteen patients with CRPS and two control groups (healthy control subjects, surgery patients with edema) participated in this study. Skin capillary hemoglobin oxygenation (HbO(2)) was measured non-invasively employing micro-lightguide spectrophotometry (EMPHO). The EMPHO probe was mounted force-controlled onto the skin of the affected and unaffected hand. HbO(2) was m…
Defects in the Human Leukocyte Antigen Class I Antigen Processing Machinery in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Association with Clinical Outco…
2005
AbstractPurpose: Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I antigen defects, which are frequently present in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) cells may provide the tumor with an escape mechanism from immune surveillance. Scanty information is available about mechanisms underlying HLA class I antigen defects in both lesions and cell lines from HNSCC. In this study, we investigate the role of antigen processing machinery (APM) component abnormalities in the generation of deficient HLA class I surface expression of HNSCC cells.Experimental Design: Using immunohistochemistry, Western blot, and RT-PCR analyses we correlated the expression of the IFN-γ inducible proteasome subunits and of…
Association of microsatellite polymorphisms of the human 14q13.2 region with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Latvian and Finnish populations.
2007
A polymorphic microsatellite in intron 6 of the human proteasome core particle PSMA6 gene (HSMS006), and four other microsatellites localized upstream on human chromosome 14q13.2 (HSMS801, HSMS702, HSMS701, HSMS602), were genotyped in 104 type 2 diabetic patients and 129 age-matched control subjects from Latvia and replicated in 91 type 2 diabetic patients and 88 age-matched healthy control subjects from the Botnia Study in Finland. In type 2 diabetic patients from both populations the HSMS006 (TG)22 allele was two times more frequent compared to the control group. In the Latvian population the (CAA)8 allele of the HSMS602 marker was less frequent in the diabetic group, as was the (AC)24 al…
ErbB4 genotype predicts left frontotemporal structural connectivity in human brain.
2008
Diminished left frontotemporal connectivity is among the most frequently reported findings in schizophrenia and there is evidence that altered neuronal myelination may in part account for this deficit. Several investigations have suggested that variations of the genes that encode the Neuregulin 1 (NRG1)-ErbB4 receptor complex are associated with schizophrenia illness. As NRG1--ErbB4 has been implicated in neuronal myelination, we investigated with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) whether fractional anisotropy (FA)--a putative measure of neuronal myelination--is predicted by a risk haplotype of the ErbB4 gene. The effects of the ErbB4 genotype were investigated in healthy subjects (N=59; mean …
An analysis of the brain's transfer properties in schizophrenia: Amplitude frequency characteristics and evoked potentials during sleep
1998
Background: Classical analysis of spontaneous sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) in schizophrenia commonly reveals alterations of sleep continuity, number of awakenings, slow-wave sleep (SWS), and REM sleep compared to healthy controls; however, conventional analysis cannot help understand dynamic differences of the sleep EEG during different sleep stages. Methods: We measured late components of auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) and visual evoked potentials (VEPs) during different sleep stages of 11 schizophrenic inpatients and in a sex- and age-matched control group from scalp positions FZ, CZ, and PZ. According to linear system theory, we then computed the amplitude-frequency characteristic…
Heparin-based ELISA reduces background reactivity in virus-like particle-based papillomavirus serology.
2004
The interaction between human papillomavirus (HPV) particles and cell surface heparan sulfate requires intact conformation of the HPV particles. Type-specific HPV serology is currently based on virus-like particles (VLPs) with intact conformation. Presence of incorrectly folded VLPs in VLP preparations is recognized as an important cause of cross-reactivity in HPV serology. Heparin-coated microtitre plates were evaluated for capturing conformationally correct VLPs and improving the type specificity of HPV serology. Hybrid VLPs between HPV16 and HPV11, which had been found to have significant reactivity with children's sera and a batch of HPV18 VLPs that had failed the quality control becaus…
Chronic T cell leukemia with unusual cellular characteristics in ataxia telangiectasia
1986
Abstract A 27-year-old male patient with ataxia telangiectasia (AT) developed atypical chronic lymphocytic leukemia with increasing bone marrow infiltration in the absence of organomegaly. One-third of the leukemia cells expressed a mature suppressor/cytotoxic T cell phenotype (T3+ T4- T6- T8+ T10-), two-thirds demonstrated additional helper/inducer T cell- associated antigens (T3+ T4+ T6- T8+ T10-), and a small fraction reacted with a natural killer (NK) cell-specific monoclonal antibody (Leu 11+). The proliferative response to stimulation in vitro with lectins and various monoclonal antibodies resembled the proliferation pattern of mature thymocytes: The cells responded to phytohemaggluti…
Diesel motor emissions and lung cancer mortality--results of the second follow-up of a cohort study in potash miners.
2009
International health authorities have graded diesel motor emissions (DME) as probably cancerogenic in human beings. There are gaps in epidemiological evidence regarding exact exposure quantification, confounder control and the investigation of highly exposed populations. We investigated the association of DME ana lung cancer mortality in a historical cohort study of 5,862 German potash miners who were followed from 1970 to 2001. Cumulative exposure (CE) was measured by representative concentrations of total carbon multiplied with exposure years from the mines' medical records. Exposure and smoking behavior were validated by interviews of 3,087 participants. We computed standardized mortalit…
Refined cytogenetic-risk categorization for overall and leukemia-free survival in primary myelofibrosis: a single center study of 433 patients.
2011
We have previously identified sole +9, 13q- or 20q-, as 'favorable' and sole +8 or complex karyotype as 'unfavorable' cytogenetic abnormalities in primary myelofibrosis (PMF). In this study of 433 PMF patients, we describe additional sole abnormalities with favorable (chromosome 1 translocations/duplications) or unfavorable (-7/7q-) prognosis and also show that other sole or two abnormalities that do not include i(17q), -5/5q-, 12p-, inv(3) or 11q23 rearrangement are prognostically aligned with normal karyotype, which is prognostically favorable. These findings were incorporated into a refined two-tired cytogenetic-risk stratification: unfavorable and favorable karyotype. The respective 5-y…
Efficacy and Tolerability of Biweekly Bevacizumab, Irinotecan, Folinic Acid and Fluorouracil Intravenous Bolus (BIFF Regimen) in Patients With Metast…
2011
Abstract Background We have extensively assessed a biweekly regimen of irinotecan plus folinic acid and fluorouracil bolus (IRIFAFU) in metastatic colorectal cancer (MCRC). Here, we report on the safety and activity of BIFF (bevacizumab plus IRIFAFU) regimen in 94 mCRC patients. Patients and Methods Bevacizumab 5 mg/kg (1 hour), and irinotecan 180 mg/m 2 (1hour) were given intravenously on day 1, 6S-folinic acid 250 mg/m 2 (2 hours), and fluorouracil 850 mg/m 2 (bolus) were given intravenously on day 2 every 2 weeks for a median of 9 cycles per patient (range, 1-12), and maintenance bevacizumab alone was delivered in 16 cases. Results Grade ≥ 3 hematologic toxicities were neutropenia (50%) …
