Estimation of total electricity consumption curves of small areas by sampling in a finite population
2016
International audience; Many studies carried out in the French electricity company EDF are based on the analysis of the total electricity consumption curves of groups of customers. These aggregated electricity consumption curves are estimated by using samples of thousands of curves measured at a small time step and collected according to a sampling design. Small area estimation is very usual in survey sampling. It is often addressed by using implicit or explicit domain models between the interest variable and the auxiliary variables. The goal here is to estimate totals of electricity consumption curves over domains or areas. Three approaches are compared: the rst one consists in modeling th…
Reproducing kernel hilbert spaces regression methods for genomic assisted prediction of quantitative traits.
2008
Abstract Reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces regression procedures for prediction of total genetic value for quantitative traits, which make use of phenotypic and genomic data simultaneously, are discussed from a theoretical perspective. It is argued that a nonparametric treatment may be needed for capturing the multiple and complex interactions potentially arising in whole-genome models, i.e., those based on thousands of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. After a review of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces regression, it is shown that the statistical specification admits a standard mixed-effects linear model representation, with smoothing parameters treated as variance components.…
The Cryptocercus punctulatus species complex (Dictyoptera: Cryptocercidae) in the eastern United States: comparison of cuticular hydrocarbons, chromo…
2008
1055-7903; The goal of the current study was to determine if cuticular hydrocarbons could be used to empirically delimit taxa within the Cryptocercus punctulatus species complex in the eastern United States. Cockroaches were collected from rotting logs in 22 locations across four states. Hydrocarbon phenotypes and two mitochondrial (16S and COII) genes and one nuclear (ITS2) gene were independently analyzed to determine their relationship with chromosome number. Five distinct hydrocarbon phenotypes were found, but these were only partly congruent with chromosome number and thus with purported species descriptions. Molecular and cuticular hydrocarbon data each indicate that Cryptocercus with…
Modified locally weighted—Partial least squares regression improving clinical predictions from infrared spectra of human serum samples
2012
Locally weighted partial least squares regression (LW-PLSR) has been applied to the determination of four clinical parameters in human serum samples (total protein, triglyceride, glucose and urea contents) by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Classical LW-PLSR models were constructed using different spectral regions. For the selection of parameters by LW-PLSR modeling, a multi-parametric study was carried out employing the minimum root-mean square error of cross validation (RMSCV) as objective function. In order to overcome the effect of strong matrix interferences on the predictive accuracy of LW-PLSR models, this work focuses on sample selection. Accordingly, a novel strateg…
Remodelling of biological parameters during human ageing: evidence for complex regulation in longevity and in type 2 diabetes.
2013
Factor structure analyses have revealed the presence of specific biological system markers in healthy humans and diseases. However, this type of approach in very old persons and in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is lacking. A total sample of 2,137 Italians consisted of two groups: 1,604 healthy and 533 with T2DM. Age (years) was categorized as adults (≤65), old (66-85), oldest old (>85-98) and centenarians (≥99). Specific biomarkers of routine haematological and biochemical testing were tested across each age group. Exploratory factorial analysis (EFA) by principal component method with Varimax rotation was used to identify factors including related variables. Structural equation modelling (SEM) wa…
Improving clustering of Web bot and human sessions by applying Principal Component Analysis
2019
View references (18) The paper addresses the problem of modeling Web sessions of bots and legitimate users (humans) as feature vectors for their use at the input of classification models. So far many different features to discriminate bots’ and humans’ navigational patterns have been considered in session models but very few studies were devoted to feature selection and dimensionality reduction in the context of bot detection. We propose applying Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to develop improved session models based on predictor variables being efficient discriminants of Web bots. The proposed models are used in session clustering, whose performance is evaluated in terms of the purity …
Testing different ICA algorithms and connectivity analyses on MS patients.
2015
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive neurological disorder that affects the central nervous system. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been employed to track the course and disease progression in patients with MS. The two main aims of this study were to apply in a data-driven approach the independent component analysis (ICA) in the spatial domain to depict the active sources and to look at the effective connectivity between the identified spatial sources. Several ICA algorithms have been proposed for fMRI data analysis. In this study, we aimed to test two well characterized algorithms, namely, the fast ICA and the complex infomax algorithms, followed by two effective conne…
An efficient functional magnetic resonance imaging data reduction strategy using neighborhood preserving embedding algorithm
2021
High dimensionality data have become common in neuroimaging fields, especially group-level functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) datasets. fMRI connectivity analysis is a widely used, powerful technique for studying functional brain networks to probe underlying mechanisms of brain function and neuropsychological disorders. However, data-driven technique like independent components analysis (ICA), can yield unstable and inconsistent results, confounding the true effects of interest and hindering the understanding of brain functionality and connectivity. A key contributing factor to this instability is the information loss that occurs during fMRI data reduction. Data reduction of high …
Multivariate quality control studies applied to Ca(II) and Mg(II) determination by a portable method
1998
Made available in DSpace on 2022-04-28T19:53:14Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 1998-01-01 A portable or field test method for simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of calcium and magnesium in water using multivariate partial least squares (PLS) calibration methods is proposed. The method is based on the reaction between the analytes and methylthymol blue at pH 11. The spectral information was used as the X-block and the Ca(II) and Mg(II) concentrations obtained by a reference technique (ICP-AES) were used as the Y-block. Two series of analyses were performed, with a month's difference between them. The first series was used as the calibration set and the second on…
Phenolic profiles of raw mono- and polyfloral honeys from Latvia
2021
Abstract The phenolic compound profiles of 393 raw mono- and polyfloral Latvian honey samples were investigated using a targeted ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS) method. This strategy allowed simultaneous determination of the content of 11 phenolic acids, 18 flavonoids, 2 plant hormones, and 3 water-soluble vitamins in honey samples of botanically diverse origin, including buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), heather (Calluna vulgaris), linden (Tilia cordata), and rapeseed (Brassica napus). Honey samples were collected directly from the beekeepers and were analyzed in their natural, raw form. A selective high-throughput analysis was im…
