Ultraviolet-visible light-induced solarisation in silica-based optical fibres for indoor solar applications
2021
Abstract The transmission performances of pure- and doped-silica (a-SiO2) optical fibres are compared during the exposure to a high-power broadband light source approximating the solar spectrum. From the Gaussian decomposition of the attenuation spectra, we found that Al- and P-doped fibres show a fast solarisation effect which leads to transmission degradation in the ultraviolet-visible range. Similarly, Ge-doped fibres undergo photoinduced colour-centre formation which, however, does not prevent visible-light propagation. One of the two tested pure-silica fibres results completely unaffected by light exposure whereas the other shows an absorption band probably due to the presence of chlor…
Oxygen permeability of hydrogel contact lenses with organosilicon moieties
2002
Oxygen transport through two extended wear (day and night) hydrogel contact lenses that contain organosilicon moieties (balafilcon A and lotrafilcon A) was studied in the hydrate (hydrogel) and dry (xerogel) states. The water uptake increased the oxygen permeability [(Dk)app] and transmissibility [Dk/L(av)] coefficients of the dry materials by about 70%. The (Dk)app for the hydrated lenses was determined following the so-called stack procedure. The values obtained were 107 +/- 4 barrer for balafilcon A and 141 +/- 5 barrer for lotrafilcon A, about 5-10 times larger than those previously reported for conventional (without organosilicon moieties) extended wear hydrogels contact lenses. The Dk…
The application of AI techniques in the optimal design of multi-pass cold drawing processes
2001
Abstract In the paper the problem of optimal pass schedule design in multi-pass wire drawing process is investigated. An automatic design procedure based on an effective artificial intelligence (AI) technique, namely simulated annealing (SA), is proposed. The developed algorithm is aimed to achieve a satisfactory balance of the drawing stresses on the material along the reduction sequence, maintaining in the meantime the drawing stress at each pass below a safety value. In this way both the optimal number of passes and the optimal drawing sequence are determined. The effectiveness of the design procedure is tested through the comparison of the sequences suggested by the algorithm with a set…
A design algorithm for the optimization of laminated composite structures
1999
This paper is devoted to the optimal design of laminated composite structures. The goal of the study is to assess the quality and the performance of an algorithm based on the directional derivative method. Particular attention is paid to the one‐dimensional search, a critical step of the process, performed by cubic splines approximation. The optimization problem is formulated as weight minimization, under constraints on the mechanical behavior of the structure. The assumed design variables are the ply thicknesses, treated as continuous design variables, constrained by technological requirements. The structural analysis is performed making use of quadrilateral four‐node composite elements, b…
Thermal buckling optimization of composite laminates by evolution strategies
2000
Abstract Thermal buckling optimization of laminated composite plates subject to a temperature rise is presented in this paper. Aerospace structures require such components that are able to withstand the external environment loads without loss of stability. The discrete optimal design problem, formulated under strain and ply contiguity constraints is solved using evolution strategies, a guided random-search method. Two different constraint handling methods are investigated and compared: the disregarding infeasible solutions and the classical penalty function approach. The results are also compared with an exact enumerative study conducted on the problem, showing the effectiveness and perform…
(o-Phenyleno)naphthalene diimides: a pink fluorescent chromophore
2017
(o-Phenyleno)naphthalene dianhydride 7 was synthesized by a six-step reaction. Imidizations of 7 led to various diimides 8. Their optical and electrochemical properties hold promise for organic electronics.

Effects of functionalized carbon nanotubes in peroxide crosslinking of diene elastomers
2009
Abstract The crosslinking reaction of ethylene–propylene–diene terpolymer (EPDM) peroxide vulcanization filled with pristine and functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs and S/CNTs) was evaluated by rheometric tests. The functionalization of CNTs was carried out by diazonium salt methodology in acid medium. S/CNTs were characterised by means of TGA, EDX, Raman and elemental analysis. Pristine CNTs were found to gradually increase the delta torque as a function of loading fraction. Nevertheless, the vulcanization time, scorch and optimum cure time hardly varied on addition of CNTs. However, S/CNTs noticeably affected the cure process, reducing the vulcanization time and delta torque. This effec…
A special class of uncoupled and quasi-homogeneous laminates
2001
Abstract This paper deals with two main problems in laminate design: the search for uncoupled and quasi-homogeneous laminates. Using the polar representation method, the authors show the existence of a particular class of mathematically exact solutions to these two problems. An important feature of these solutions is that they are independent of the orientations of the layers. In fact, these orientations are not fixed by the method, and each solution determines in reality only a stacking sequence, where each layer belongs to a group of plies having the same orientation. The orientations remain undetermined, and it is up to the designer to fix them. In any event, whether the laminate is unco…
Effect of calcium hydroxide dressing on microleakage of composite restorations in endodontically treated teeth subsequent to bleaching
2009
Objective: This study evaluates the effect of calcium hydroxide dressing on microleakage of composite restorations following non-vital bleaching. Methods: A total of 45 sound extracted human maxillary central incisors underwent endodontic treatment. The teeth were randomly divided into three groups (n=15). In group 1, access cavities were restored with composite. In group 2, the teeth underwent a bleaching procedure for one week before being restored with composite. In group 3, following a bleaching procedure, calcium hydroxide paste was placed in the pulp chamber for one week. The teeth were then restored with composite. The specimens were subjected to a dye leakage test. The data was anal…
