Application based on dynamic reconfiguration of field-programmable gate arrays: JPEG 2000 arithmetic decoder

2005

This paper describes the implementation of a part of the JPEG 2000 algorithm (MQ decoder and arithmetic decoder) on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) board by using dynamic reconfiguration. A comparison between static and dynamic reconfiguration is presented, and new analysis criteria (spatiotemporal efficiency, logic cost, and performance time) have been defined. The MQ decoder and arithmetic decoder are attractive for dynamic reconfiguration implementation in applications without parallel processing. This implementation is done on an architecture designed to study the dynamic reconfiguration of FPGAs: the ARDOISE architecture. The obtained implementation, based on four partial config…

On the application of the generalized means to construct multiresolution schemes satisfying certain inequalities proving stability

2021

Multiresolution representations of data are known to be powerful tools in data analysis and processing, and they are particularly interesting for data compression. In order to obtain a proper definition of the edges, a good option is to use nonlinear reconstructions. These nonlinear reconstruction are the heart of the prediction processes which appear in the definition of the nonlinear subdivision and multiresolution schemes. We define and study some nonlinear reconstructions based on the use of nonlinear means, more in concrete the so-called Generalized means. These means have two interesting properties that will allow us to get associated reconstruction operators adapted to the presence o…

Preliminary design of EU DEMO helium-cooled breeding blanket primary heat transfer system

2018

Abstract The European DEMO conceptual design foresees four Breeding Blanket (BB) concepts that rely on different cooling and breeding technologies. As DEMO has been conceived to deliver net electricity to the grid, the choice of the blanket coolant plays a pivotal role in the reactor design having a strong influence on plant operation, safety and maintenance. Moreover, the machine pulsed operation makes the BB Primary Heat Transfer System (PHTS) the main hub of the DEMO Balance of Plant (BoP). Within this framework, a study has been carried out to design the Ex-Vessel PHTS of the Helium-Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) BB concept. The paper describes criteria and rationale followed with the aim to …

Bias artifact suppression on MR volumes.

2007

RF-Inhomogeneity correction is a relevant research topic in the field of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). A volume corrupted by this artifact exhibits nonuni- form illumination both inside a single slice and between adjacent ones. In this work a bias correction technique is presented, which suppresses this artifact on MR vol- umes scanned from different body parts without any a-priori hypothesis on the artifact model. Theoretical foundations of the method are reported together with experimental results and a comparison is presented with both the 2D version of the algorithm and other techniques that are widely used in MRI literature.

Automatic left ventricle volume calculation with explainability through a deep learning weak-supervision methodology

2021

[EN] Background and objective: Magnetic resonance imaging is the most reliable imaging technique to assess the heart. More specifically there is great importance in the analysis of the left ventricle, as the main pathologies directly affect this region. In order to characterize the left ventricle, it is necessary to extract its volume. In this work we present a neural network architecture that is capable of directly estimating the left ventricle volume in short axis cine Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the end-diastolic frame and provide a segmentation of the region which is the basis of the volume calculation, thus offering explain-ability to the estimated value. Methods: The network was des…

A new Adaptive and Progressive Image Transmission Approach using Function Superpositions

2010

International audience; We present a novel approach to adaptive and progressive image transmission, based on the decomposition of an image into compositions and superpositions of monovariate functions. The monovariate functions are iteratively constructed and transmitted, one after the other, to progressively reconstruct the original image: the progressive transmission is performed directly in the 1D space of the monovariate functions and independently of any statistical properties of the image. Each monovariate function contains only a fraction of the pixels of the image. Each new transmitted monovariate function adds data to the previously transmitted monovariate functions. After each tra…

Improved Statistically Based Retrievals via Spatial-Spectral Data Compression for IASI Data

2019

In this paper, we analyze the effect of spatial and spectral compression on the performance of statistically based retrieval. Although the quality of the information is not com- pletely preserved during the coding process, experiments reveal that a certain amount of compression may yield a positive impact on the accuracy of retrievals. We unveil two strategies, both with interesting benefits: either to apply a very high compression, which still maintains the same retrieval performance as that obtained for uncompressed data; or to apply a moderate to high compression, which improves the performance. As a second contribution of this paper, we focus on the origins of these benefits. On the one…

Embedded Processing and Compression of 3D Sensor Data for Large Scale Industrial Environments

2019

This paper presents a scalable embedded solution for processing and transferring 3D point cloud data. Sensors based on the time-of-flight principle generate data which are processed on a local embedded computer and compressed using an octree-based scheme. The compressed data is transferred to a central node where the individual point clouds from several nodes are decompressed and filtered based on a novel method for generating intensity values for sensors which do not natively produce such a value. The paper presents experimental results from a relatively large industrial robot cell with an approximate size of 10 m &times

3D contour based local manual correction of tumor segmentations in CT scans

2009

Segmentation is an essential task in medical image analysis. For example measuring tumor growth in consecutive CT scans based on the volume of the tumor requires a good segmentation. Since manual segmentation takes too much time in clinical routine automatic segmentation algorithms are typically used. However there are always cases where an automatic segmentation fails to provide an acceptable segmentation for example due to low contrast, noise or structures of the same density lying close to the lesion. These erroneous segmentation masks need to be manually corrected. We present a novel method for fast three-dimensional local manual correction of segmentation masks. The user needs to draw …
