Bioactive glass ions induce efficient osteogenic differentiation of human adipose stem cells encapsulated in gellan gum and collagen type I hydrogels
2019
Abstract Background Due to unmet need for bone augmentation, our aim was to promote osteogenic differentiation of human adipose stem cells (hASCs) encapsulated in gellan gum (GG) or collagen type I (COL) hydrogels with bioactive glass (experimental glass 2-06 of composition [wt-%]: Na2O 12.1, K2O 14.0, CaO 19.8, P2O5 2.5, B2O3 1.6, SiO2 50.0) extract based osteogenic medium (BaG OM) for bone construct development. GG hydrogels were crosslinked with spermidine (GG-SPD) or BaG extract (GG-BaG). Methods Mechanical properties of cell-free GG-SPD, GG-BaG, and COL hydrogels were tested in osteogenic medium (OM) or BaG OM at 0, 14, and 21 d. Hydrogel embedded hASCs were cultured in OM or BaG OM fo…
A New Multicast Technique for Video Transmission over ABR Services in ATM Networks
2000
Multicast techniques are the only way to simultaneously provide flows of information from one source to several destinations. The intention of this paper is to study and to evaluate different multicast techniques using a video coder based on an adaptive video compression algorithm with subband coding and a best effort network service like ATM with the Available Bit Rate (ABR) service. This video transmission can adapt faster and easily to changing network conditions. In this way, we present an evaluation process for a determined network configuration. Thereafter we discuss the results obtained by simulation and propose for this video transmission a trade-off between these multicast techniqu…
Nature log-analytique du volume des sous-analytiques
2000
Using a preparation theorem for subanalytic functions and Lipschitz stratification for compact subanalytic sets we prove that volumes of slices of globally subanalytic sets and density have a log-analytic nature. We also prove that the set of parameters for which the volume of fiber is finite is globally subanalytic.
Volumetric Reconstruction of Unorganized Set of Points with Implicit Surfaces
2005
Many solutions exist to rebuild a three-dimensional object represented by a set of points. The purpose of our work is to provide an automatic reconstruction from an unorganized cloud, describing an unknown shape, in the aim to compute its volume. The approach employed in this paper consists in filling the object's interior with isosurfaces of potential fields and to use their fusion property in order to find the full volume and the continuous shape of the sampled object. Thus, the first step of our reconstruction is to search a correct interior for the object described by the set of points. Then, comes the positioning of implicit primitives into the cloud, deep inside of it and close to the…
Influence of ambient temperature on the photosynthetic activity and phenolic content of the intertidal Cystoseira compressa along the Italian coastli…
2019
Understanding the physiological responses of intertidal seaweeds to environmental factors is fundamental to characterize their local physiological adaptation and success in the face of climate change. We measured the photosynthetic activity and the total phenolic content of the intertidal alga Cystoseira compressa and explored their relationship with latitude or local ambient air and seawater temperatures. Our results show that, when submerged, the photosynthetic activity of C. compressa showed values typical for non-stressed thalli, and the seawater temperatures found across sites explained the variability of these values. We observed a decrease in the photosynthetic activity of C. compres…

Effect of the mineralogical composition on the elastoplastic hydromechanical response of Opalinus Clay shale
2021
Abstract Opalinus Clay is the shale currently under investigation as the host formation for geological radioactive waste disposal in Switzerland. Its hydromechanical response has been widely studied, and the experimental results show a range of values whose dispersion needs to be clarified. This work aims to explain the dispersion in the literature results by correlating the hydro-mechanical response to the mineralogical variability of the tested specimens . Based on published microstructural studies, the Opalinus Clay shale is herein schematised as a sequence of two kinds of layers: the shaly (high in clay-mineral content) and the sandy (low in clay-mineral content) layers. The mineralogic…
EVOLUZIONE DELLA COMPOSIZIONE GRANULOMETRICA DI SABBIE POMICEE SOTTOPOSTE A COMPRESSIONE 1-D FINO AD ALTE PRESSIONI
2012
The Effects of Structure on the One Dimensional Compression Behaviour of a Porous Calcarenite
2019
Human settlements built on weak rock deposits are often characterized by instabilities or collapse that may involve the underground cavities and consequently the above buildings. Underground calcarenite quarries in Marsala have been involved in a number of collapses that have seriously damaged numerous buildings. Unfortunately proper engineering solutions have not yet been identified according to the different and special cases and to the properties of this structured material. In order to investigate structure effects on the behaviour of the porous calcarenite of Marsala, this paper presents a comparison between the one dimensional compression behaviour of the intact rock and of the same w…
The evolution of grain-size distribution of sands under 1-D compression
2009
Crushing of particles is a fundamental mechanisms leading to deformation of particulate materials at medium and high stresses. As crushing progresses, the grain-size distribution undergoes modifications, causing changes of the porosity, grain-to-grain contacts and of their density (”packing density” and “grain contact”). The main aim of the research is the identification of trends in the modifications of characteristic diameters (D10, D15, D25, etc.) in function of the applied stress s´v. Results of a laboratory research programme on the crushing of dry sands compressed under one-dimensional conditions, at vertical effective stresses ′v up to 120 MPa, are reported in the paper. Tests have …
