Complications in Craniovertebral Junction Instrumentation: Hardware Removal Can Be Associated with Long-Lasting Stability. Personal Experience
2017
Background The causes of craniovertebral junction (CVJ) instabilities include trauma, rheumatological diseases, tumors, infections, congenital malformations, and degenerative disease processes; these complex pathologies often require CVJ instrumentation. Hardware complications were analyzed in a personal series of 48 treated patients. In light of the analysis of very unusual radiological and clinical findings, the authors tried to better investigate the related mechanisms and to reach possible useful conclusions. Methods In a series of 48 patients who underwent CVJ instrumentation and fusion procedures in our Institution, we describe three cases of hardware failure, due to: (1) infection; (…
A novel miniature telemetric system for recording EEG activity in freely moving rats
2008
Telemetric recording systems offer the advantage to monitor physiological parameters in freely moving animals without any restrictions in their explorative behaviour. We present a novel, inexpensive, portable and reusable telemetric system to record the electroencephalogram (EEG) from adult freely moving rats under various experimental conditions. Our system consists of an implantable transmitter which communicates at a sampling rate of 500 Hz bi-directional with a receiver via radio transmission (in EU: 868.35 MHz; in USA: 916.5 MHz) over a distance of up to 3 m. The switching time between receiving and transmitting signals is 20s and the data transmission rate amounts to 115.2 kbps. The r…
Key Influencing Factors in Early-Stage Hardware Startups: A Trilateral Model of Speed, Resource, and Quality
2020
Hardware startups, i.e., wearable devices, robotics, and Internet of Things, are a significant sector of technology startups, in which software development is relevant and needed. Compared to pure software startups, hardware development in startup contexts lacks a systematic approach and guidelines. This chapter describes an empirical model that captures common elements in product development approaches among many hardware startups. Grounded from insights of 18 active hardware startups, we constructed a trilateral model of resource, speed, and quality in early-stage product development. For startups with relevant contexts, the work suggests the preparation of internal, external resources, a…
PEM electrolyzer characterization with carbon-based hardware and material sets
2021
Abstract The research and development of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is an upcoming and growing area due to a rising interest in hydrogen as an energy carrier. Operating conditions are harsher than in a fuel cell system, particularly because the potentials required for the oxygen evolution reaction are significantly higher. In commercial water electrolysis systems, this is compensated by typically using titanium material sets that are often protected against oxidation through coating processes. Such material choices make small scale research hardware and porous transport layers expensive and difficult to source. In this work, we show that the stability of traditional…
PPG embedded system for blood pressure monitoring
2014
In this work, we have designed and implemented a microcontroller-based embedded system for blood pressure monitoring through a PhotoPlethysmoGraphic (PPG) technique. In our system, it is possible to perform PPG measurements via reflectance mode. Hardware novelty of our system consists in the adoption of Silicon PhotoMultiplier detectors. The signal received from the photodetector is used to calculate the instantaneous heart rate and therefore the heart rate variability. The obtained results show that, by using our system, it is possible to easily extract both the PPG and the breath signal. These signals can be used to monitor the patients during the convalescence both in hospital and at hom…
Improving Computing Systems Automatic Multiobjective Optimization Through Meta-Optimization
2016
This paper presents the extension of framework for automatic design space exploration (FADSE) tool using a meta-optimization approach, which is used to improve the performance of design space exploration algorithms, by driving two different multiobjective meta-heuristics concurrently. More precisely, we selected two genetic multiobjective algorithms: 1) non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II and 2) strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm 2, that work together in order to improve both the solutions’ quality and the convergence speed. With the proposed improvements, we ran FADSE in order to optimize the hardware parameters’ values of the grid ALU processor (GAP) micro-architecture from a b…
Sensor-Oriented Passive RFID
2010
This chapter addresses the design of new UHF tag antennas for sensing applications able to host detectors and additional electronics but also to act as passive sensor itself for some modification of the target. Starting from the consideration that the tag is both a digital and an analog device, sensing data may be achieved without using microcontrollers by a simple signal processing of the tag response and of the turn-on power. The chapter is particularly focused on the monitoring of human body features even if the proposed ideas and devices, here demonstrated by simulations and experimentation, may also be applied in a variety of scenarios.
Real-time Sound Source Localization on Graphics Processing Units
2013
Abstract Sound source localization is an important topic in microphone array signal processing applications, such as camera steering systems, human-machine interaction or surveillance systems. The Steered Response Power with Phase Transform (SRP- PHAT) algorithm is one of the most well-known approaches for sound source localization due to its good performance in noisy and reverberant environments. The algorithm analyzes the sound power captured by a microphone array on a grid of spatial points in a given room. While localization accuracy can be improved by using a high resolution spatial grid and a high number of microphones, performing the localization task in these circumstances requires …
LabVIEW modeling and simulation, of the low-pass and high-pass analog filters
2015
Some programs for simulating different types of filters are developed using LabView software. Implementing a simulation program of an analog filter requires the prior establishment of mathematical model. As a general purpose programming environment, LabVIEW offers possibility of achieving some user programs for plotting frequency characteristics of passive and active analog filters, if established beforehand mathematical models that characterize their behavior. The scientific objectives of this paper are: -the analysis of the possibilities of using virtual instrumentation in the study of electrical filters; -implementation of virtual instruments for analysis and simulation of analog filters…
Hardware Implementation of a Configurable Motion Estimator for Adjusting the Video Coding Performances
2012
International audience; Despite the diversity of video compression standard, the motion estimation still remains a key process which is used in most of them. Moreover, the required coding performances (bit-rate, PSNR, image spatial resolution, etc.) depend obviously of the application, the environment and the network communication. The motion estimation can therefore be adapted to fit with these performances. Meanwhile, the real time encoding is required in many applications. In order to reach this goal, we propose in this paper a hardware implementation of the motion estimator which enables the integer motion search algorithms to be modified and the fractional search and variable block siz…
