Vortex shape in unbaffled stirred vessels: experimental study via digital image analysis

There is a growing interest in using unbaffled stirred tanks for addressing certain processing needs. In this work, digital image analysis coupled with a suitable shadowgraphy-based technique is used to investigate the shape of the free-surface vortex that forms in uncovered unbaffled stirred tanks. The technique is based on back-lighting the vessel and suitably averaging vortex shape over time. Impeller clearance from vessel bottom and tank filling level are varied to investigate their influence on vortex shape. A correlation is finally proposed to fully describe vortex shape also when the vortex encompasses the impeller.

Valorization of waste solvents through supercritical water gasification

The supercritical water gasification of various organic species belonging to the groups of organic acids, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols and phenols, has been studied as a possible waste disposal method for polluted water stream produced in industries and laboratories. Collagenases class I (Col G) and class II (Col H) currently available for tissue dissociation are produced from Clostridium histolyticum (human pathogen) strains. In the processes of extraction of the cells from the tissue, combined activity of both classes of enzymes is required. CI and CII are complementary in degrading collagen. Optimization of environmental conditions for kefiran production by kefir grain as scaffold for tissue engineering

The aim of this work was to investigate the fermentation medium and environmental requirements for the production of exopolysaccharide (EPS) Kefiran from natural culture (Kefir grains). We have found that the fermentation medium and temperature are critical for Kefiran production during the 24 h cultivation of kefir grains. The Kefiran obtained from fat cow milk was used to evaluate its potential application as scaffold for tissue engineering. Kefiran scaffold were obtained via solvent casting and direct quenching. Thermal and morphology features were evaluated by DSC and SEM, respectively.
