High-Speed Machines: Typologies, Standards, and Operation under PWM Supply

2018

This paper presents an overview of the most recent state of the art in the field of high-speed electric machines fed through high-frequency converters. This type of systems is rapidly wide spreading in aeronautical and automotive applications, as well as microturbines. Each typology has its own advantages and downsides, which are analytically presented in this paper. Some types of high-speed electric machines require high-frequency voltage supply, highly stressing the dielectric materials of the winding insulation system. For this reason, in high-speed electric drives, premature failure may occur and a reduction of the total system reliability has been observed in the past years. Such issue…

Mechanisms of common ground in case-based web discussions in teacher education

2002

Previous studies suggest that before participants in web-based conferencing can reach deeper level interaction and learning, they have to gain an adequate level of common ground in terms of shared mutual understanding, knowledge, beliefs, assumptions, and presuppositions (Clark & Schaefer, 1989; Dillenbourg, 1999). In this paper, the purpose is to explore how participants establish and maintain common ground in order to reach deeper level interaction in case-based web discussions. The subjects in this study consisted of 68 preservice teachers and 7 mentors from 3 universities, who participated in a web-based conferencing course for 8 weeks. The written discussion data were analyzed by means…

Digital Cultural Heritage

2018

Most contemporary thinkers agree that we are going through a time of historical change, building adifferent concept and model of social interrelation. Our ways of life and work have changed, as havethe ways in which we communicate and relate to each other.

A Lite Romanian BERT: ALR-BERT

2022

Large-scale pre-trained language representation and its promising performance in various downstream applications have become an area of interest in the field of natural language processing (NLP). There has been huge interest in further increasing the model’s size in order to outperform the best previously obtained performances. However, at some point, increasing the model’s parameters may lead to reaching its saturation point due to the limited capacity of GPU/TPU. In addition to this, such models are mostly available in English or a shared multilingual structure. Hence, in this paper, we propose a lite BERT trained on a large corpus solely in the Romanian language, which we cal…

The diffusion and use of information and communication technologies and the city from 1996 to 2009

2013

The aim of this paper is to investigate whether the diffusion and the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) are associated with the size of the place of residence where people live. The article explores how the relationship between ICTs and place of residence changed between 1996 and 2009. The study presents data from two consecutive telephone surveys collected from Italy, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain. Results show an unexpected role of the relatively rural areas as attractor of new technologies. Although the largest cities have remained the locus of telecommunications on the whole, the relationship between ICTs and the place of abode has changed consider…

Development of a Simulator for Prototyping Reinforcement Learning-Based Autonomous Cars

2022

Autonomous driving is a research field that has received attention in recent years, with increasing applications of reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms. It is impractical to train an autonomous vehicle thoroughly in the physical space, i.e., the so-called ’real world’; therefore, simulators are used in almost all training of autonomous driving algorithms. There are numerous autonomous driving simulators, very few of which are specifically targeted at RL. RL-based cars are challenging due to the variety of reward functions available. There is a lack of simulators addressing many central RL research tasks within autonomous driving, such as scene understanding, localization and mapping, pla…

Scheduling solution for the IEEE 802.16 base station

2008

The IEEE 802.16 standard defines a wireless broadband access network technology called WiMAX. It introduces several advantages, one of which is the support for QoS at the MAC level. To ensure meeting the QoS requirements, the 802.16 base station must run some algorithm to allocate slots between connections. This algorithm is not defined in the 802.16 specification but rather is open for alternative implementations. We propose a simple, yet efficient, solution that is capable of allocating slots based on the QoS requirements, bandwidth request sizes, and the 802.16 network parameters. To test the proposed solution, we have implemented the 802.16 MAC and PHY layers in the NS-2 simulator. Seve…

A performance analysis of block ACK scheme for IEEE 802.11e networks

2010

The demand for the IEEE 802.11 wireless local-area networks (WLANs) has been drastically increasing along with many emerging applications and services over WLAN. However, the IEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) is known to be limited in terms of its throughput performance due to the high MAC overhead, such as interframe spaces (IFS) or per-frame based acknowledgement (ACK) frame transmissions. The IEEE 802.11e MAC introduces the block ACK scheme for improving the system efficiency of the WLAN. Using the block ACK scheme can reduce the ACK transmission overhead by integrating multiple ACKs for a number of data frames into a bitmap that is contained in a block ACK frame, thus increasing t…

Rethinking the IEEE 802.11e EDCA Performance Modeling Methodology

2010

Analytical modeling of the 802.11e enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) mechanism is today a fairly mature research area, considering the very large number of papers that have appeared in the literature. However, most work in this area models the EDCA operation through per-slot statistics, namely probability of transmission and collisions referred to "slots." In so doing, they still share a methodology originally proposed for the 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF), although they do extend it by considering differentiated transmission/ collision probabilities over different slots. We aim to show that it is possible to devise 802.11e models that do not rely on per-slot statis…
