Measurements of ground-state properties for nuclear structure studies by precision mass and laser spectroscopy

Atomic physics techniques like Penning-trap and storage-ring mass spectrometry as well as laser spectroscopy have provided sensitive high-precision tools for detailed studies of nuclear ground-state properties far from the valley of β-stability. Mass, moment and nuclear charge radius measurements in long isotopic and isotonic chains have allowed extraction of nuclear structure information such as halos, shell and subshell closures, the onset of deformation, and the coexistence of nuclear shapes at nearly degenerate energies. This review covers experimental precision techniques to study nuclear ground-state properties and some of the most recent results for nuclear structure studies.

For over four decades, the Skyrme functional within various parametrizations has been used to calculate nuclear properties. In the last few years there was a number of attempts to improve its performance and introduce generalized forms. In particular, the most general phenomenological quasi-local energy density functional, which contains all combinations of density, spin-density, and their derivatives up to the sixth order (N3LO), was proposed in [1]. Since in the phenomenological-functional approaches, the particle-particle (pp) channel is treated independently of the particle-hole (ph) channel, there remains a question of what pairing interaction is suitable to use within the N3LO energy …
Path integral solution by fractional calculus

In this paper, the Path Integral solution is developed in terms of complex moments. The method is applied to nonlinear systems excited by normal white noise. Crucial point of the proposed procedure is the representation of the probability density of a random variable in terms of complex moments, recently proposed by the first two authors. Advantage of this procedure is that complex moments do not exhibit hierarchy. Extension of the proposed method to the study of multi degree of freedom systems is also discussed.

Maximizing phonon thermal conductance for ballistic membranes

At low temperatures, phonon scattering can become so weak that phonon transport becomes ballistic. We calculate the ballistic phonon conductance G for membranes using elasticity theory, considering the transition from three to two dimensions. We discuss the temperature and thickness dependence and especially concentrate on the issue of material parameters. For all membrane thicknesses, the best conductors have, counter-intuitively, the lowest speed of sound.
Influence of impurity scattering on Drude response in heavy-fermion UPd2Al3

The frequency-dependent conductivity of heavy-fermion metals can often be described within the picture of the Drude response: the transport relaxation rate is the only relevant frequency scale and, furthermore, reduced by orders of magnitude compared to normal metals. While the relaxation-time enhancement corresponds to the effective-mass enhancement in these materials, i.e. a fundamental material characteristic, the absolute value of the relaxation time depends on the details of the relevant scattering processes. Here we discuss the influence of impurity scattering on the Drude response of the heavy fermions in UPd2Al3 by comparing different thin film samples.
