Testing Time Dilation on Fast Ion Beams

2011

We report the status of an experimental test of time dilation in Special Relativity. This is accomplished by simultaneously measuring the forward and backward Doppler shifts of an electronic transition of fast moving ions, using high-precision laser spectroscopy. From these two Doppler shifts both the ion velocity ? = v/c and the time dilation factor can be derived. From measurements based on saturation spectroscopy on lithium ions stored at ? = 0.03 and ? = 0.06 in the TSR heavy-ion storage ring, we achieved an upper limit for a [?2] deviation from Special Relativity of . In recent measurements on a ? = 0.34 Li+ beam in the ESR storage ring we used optical-optical double-resonance spectros…

Parallel phase-shifting digital holography based on the fractional Talbot effect

2010

A method for recording on-axis single-shot digital holograms based on the self-imaging phenomenon is reported. A simple binary two-dimensional periodic amplitude is used to codify the reference beam in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, generating a periodic three-step phase distribution with uniform irradiance over the sensor plane by fractional Talbot effect. An image sensor records only one shot of the interference between the light field scattered by the object and the codified parallel reference beam. Images of the object are digitally reconstructed from the digital hologram through the numerical evaluation of the Fresnel diffraction integral. This scheme provides an efficient way to perfo…

Collimation of Target Induced Halo Following MAGIX at MESA

2019

The Mainz Energy-recovering Superconducting Accelerator (MESA) will be an electron accelerator allowing operation in energy-recovery linac (ERL) mode. It provides the opportunity to operate scattering experiments at energies of ~100 MeV with thin gas-targets. The MESA Internal Gas Target Experiment (MAGIX) aims to operate windowless jet targets and different gases up to Xenon to search for possible dark photon interactions, to precisely measure the magnetic proton radius and astrophysical S-factors. Investigations on the impact of the target on beam dynamics and beam losses are required for machine safety and to examine limits to ERL operation. The goal of this work is to understand target …

Galactic synchrotron emission from astrophysical electrons

2012

The interaction between the galactic magnetic field and the non-thermal population of electrons is responsible for a large part of the radio sky from 10 MHz up to several GHz. This population is mostly composed of electrons with primary and secondary origin. Cosmic ray propagation models describe their evolution in space and energy, and allow to study the impact on the radio sky in intensity and morphology at different frequencies. We consider different propagation models and test their compatibility with available radio maps. We find models highly consistent both with B/C data, the local electron flux and synchrotron emission observations. The resulting constraints on propagation models co…

βdecay of102Y produced in projectile fission of238U

2012

The population of 102Zr following the β decay of 102Y produced in the projectile fission of 238U at the GSI facility in Darmstadt, Germany has been studied. 102Y is known to ß decay into 102Zr via two states, one of high spin and the other low spin. These states preferentially populate different levels in the 102Zr daughter. In this paper the intensities of transitions in 102Zr observed are compared with those from the decay of the low-spin level studied at the TRISTAN facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory and of the high-spin level studied at the JOSEF separator at the Kernforschungsanlage Jülich.

Reaction dynamics and nuclear structure studies via deep inelastic collisions with heavy-ions: spin and parity assignment in49Ca

2011

The population and gamma decay of neutron rich nuclei around 48Ca has been measured at Legnaro National Laboratory with the PRISMA-CLARA setup, using deep-inelastic collisions (DIC) on 64Ni, at an energy approximately twice the Coulomb barrier. The reaction properties of the main products are investigated, focusing on total cross sections and angular distributions both integrated in energy and associated to the population of specific excited states. Gamma spectroscopy studies are also performed, giving evidence, for the first time in transfer reactions with heavy ions, of a large spin alignment (~70%), perpendicular to the reaction plane. This makes possible the use of angular distributions…

Cluster Structure of $^9$Be by Scattering of Deuterons

2017

International audience; Angular distributions of protons, deuterons, tritons and alpha particles emitted in the reaction 2H+9Be at Elab=19.5 MeV were measured with an aim to shed light on the internal cluster structure of 9Be and to study possible cluster transfer of 5He. The analyses suggest a significant contribution of five-nucleon transfer in the reaction channel 9Be(d,4He)7Li.

From led light signboards to the Planck’s constant

2018

Recent studies have highlighted an alarming decline in young people’s interest towards the study of scientific subjects, often considered interesting but not easily understood and appreciated by students. In particular, the introduction of Modern Physics (MP) key-topics at secondary school level is a difficult and complex task because MP involves abstract ideas and requires a strong mathematical background. In this communication we present and discuss the results of an inquiry-based teaching/learning path aimed at surmounting the difficulties of an exclusively theoretical approach to the introduction of MP topics. In particular, we planned and realized an inquiry-driven learning environment…

On the renormalization of ultraviolet divergences in the inflationary angular power spectrum

2015

We revise the role of ultraviolet divergences of cosmological observables and the corresponding renormalization from a space-time perspective. We employ the two-point function of primordial perturbations generated during inflation to derive an analytic expression for the multipole coefficients Cl in the Sachs-Wolfe regime. We analyzethe ultraviolet behaviorand stress the fact that the standard result in the literature is equivalent to a renormalization of the two-point function at zeroth adiabatic order. We also argue that renormalization at second adiabatic order seems to be more appropriate from a physical point of view. This may change significantly the predictions for Cl, while maintain…
