EDM observables for τ production with polarized beams

2008

The Tau-lepton electric dipole moment (EDM) can be measured at Super B/Flavor factories operating with polarized electron beams at energies near and on top of the ¤ resonances. In particular, new CP-odd observables, independent from others already considered, will allow to put stringent bounds on the ? EDM.

The “Physics Beyond Colliders” Projects for the CERN M2 Beam

2019

Abstract Physics Beyond Colliders is an exploratory study aimed at exploiting the full scientific potential of CERN’s accelerator complex up to 2040 and its scientific infrastructure through projects complementary to the existing and possible future colliders. Within the Conventional Beam Working Group (CBWG), several projects for the M2 beam line in the CERN North Area were proposed, such as a successor for the COMPASS experiment, a muon programme for NA64 dark sector physics, and the MuonE proposal aiming at investigating the hadronic contribution to the vacuum polarisation. We present integration and beam optics studies for 100 – 160 GeV/c muon beams as well as an outlook for improvement…

Site selection for the new generation of giant neutrino detectors

2012

The main findings of the LAGUNA Design Study are briefly discussed. Construction of giant underground detectors is technically feasible at several sites. Physics factors will dominate in the site selection.

Measuring the14C content in liquid scintillators

2016

We are going to perform a series of measurements where the 14C/12 C ratio will be measured from several liquid scintillator samples with a dedicated setup. The setup is designed with the aim of measuring ratios smaller than 10-18. Measurements take place in two underground laboratories: in the Baksan Neutrino Observatory, Russia and in the Pyhasalmi mine, Finland. In Baksan the measurements started in 2015 and in Pyhasalmi they start in the beginning of 2015. In order to fully understand the operation of the setup and its background contributions a development of simulation packages has also been started. Low-energy neutrino detection with a liquid scintillator requires that the intrinsic 1…

Calculation of total muon flux observed by Muon Monitor experiment

2017

An approach to calculate the flux of cosmicgenic muons detected by Muon Monitor experiment in lab LAB2400 of the Underground Laboratory in Canfranc (LSC) is described. The measuring apparatus consists of three layers of SC16 scintillation matrix detectors. The hardware function of the detector assembly was determined using computer simulation. Obtained value of the total muon ux turned out to be equal to (4.35 ± 0.2) × 10−3 m −2 s −1.

A new plunger device to measure lifetimes of unbound states in tagged exotic nuclei

2012

A new plunger device has been designed and is being built at the University of Manchester to measure lifetimes of unbound states in exotic nuclei approaching the proton drip-line. The device is designed to work in both vacuum and gas environments and will be used in conjunction with the gas filled separator RITU and the vacuum-mode separator MARA at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. This will enable the accurate measurement of excited state lifetimes identified via isomer and charged-particle tagging. The plunger will be used to address many key facets of nuclear structure physics with particular emphasis on the effect of deformation on proton emission rates.

Transient analysis of "2 inch Direct Vessel Injection line break" in SPES-2 facility by using TRACE code

2015

In the past few decades a lot of theoretical and experimental researches have been done to understand the physical phenomena characterizing nuclear accidents. In particular, after the Three Miles Island accident, several reactors have been designed to handle successfully LOCA events. This paper presents a comparison between experimental and numerical results obtained for the “2 inch Direct Vessel Injection line break” in SPES-2. This facility is an integral test facility built in Piacenza at the SIET laboratories and simulating the primary circuit, the relevant parts of the secondary circuits and the passive safety systems typical of the AP600 nuclear power plant. The numerical analysis her…

Cluster Structure of9Be from3He+9Be Reaction

2016

The study of inelastic scattering and multi-nucleon transfer reactions was performed by bombarding a 9Be target with a 3He beam at an incident energy of 30 MeV. Angular distributions for 9Be(3He,3He)9Be, 9Be(3He,4He)8Be, 9Be(3He,7Be)5He, 9Be(3He,6Li)6Li and 9Be(3He,7Li)5Li reaction channels were measured. Cross sections for channels leading to unbound 5He g.s ., 5Li g.s . and 8Be systems were obtained from singles measurements where the relationship between the energy and the scattering angle of the observed stable ejectile is constrained by two-body kinematics. Information on the cluster structure of 9Be was obtained from the transfer channels. It was concluded that cluster transfer is an …

Nuclear Forensics: A methodology applicable to Nuclear Security and to Non-Proliferation

2011

Nuclear Security aims at the prevention and detection of and response to, theft, sabotage, unauthorized access, illegal transfer or other malicious acts involving nuclear material". Nuclear Forensics is a key element of nuclear security. Nuclear Forensics is defined as a methodology that aims at re-establishing the history of nuclear material of unknown origin. It is based on indicators that arise from known relationships between material characteristics and process history. Thus, nuclear forensics analysis includes the characterization of the material and correlation with production history. To this end, we can make use of parameters such as the isotopic composition of the nuclear material…
