Pushing the Limits: Nuclear Structure of Heavy Elements

2012

Throughout the history of nuclear structure studies, searches for new phenomena have been carried out at the extremes. These extremes can be described in terms of nuclear excitation energy, spin, or in terms of proton or neutron number through the production of exotic nuclei far from stability. One extreme which has always been a centre for activity is that of mass and proton number - the desire to create new chemical elements and understand their nuclear structure. New elements up to proton number Z=118 have been created in the laboratory, but by nature these experiments cannot provide extensive information concerning nuclear structure. The extremely small production cross sections only al…

Single Particle Levels and ββ-Decay Matrix Elements in The Interacting Boson Model

2018

Recently a new method to calculate the occupancies of single particle levels in atomic nuclei was developed in the context of the microscopic interacting boson model, in which neutron and proton degrees of freedom are treated explicitly (IBM-2). The energies of the single particle levels constitute a very important input for the calculation of the occupancies in this method, and further they play important role in the calculation of double beta decay nuclear matrix elements. Here we discuss how the 0νββ, 0νhββ, and 2νββ-decay nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) are affected when the energies of single particle levels are changed. peerReviewed

Laser cooling of stored relativistic ion beams with large momentum spreads using a laser system with a wide scanning range

2014

New results on laser cooling of stored, bunched, relativistic ion beams are presented. For the first time it has been possible to cool an ion beam with large momentum spread without initial electron cooling or scanning of the bunching frequency by using a single cw laser system.

Investigation of the elastic and inelastic scattering of 4He from 11B in the energy range 29-50.5 MeV

2018

We have measured the angular distributions for the elastic and inelastic scattering of 4He from 11B in the isochronous cyclotron U-150 M INP RK. The extracted α-particles beam has been accelerated to energy 29 MeV and then directed to 11B target. The experimental results were analyzed within the framework of both the optical model using different complex potential and the double folding potential obtained with different density-dependent NN interactions which give the corresponding values of the nuclear incompressibility K in the Hartree-Fock calculation of nuclear matter.

CP violation and the H-A lineshape

2007

In two-Higgs doublet models (and particularly in the MSSM) the CP-even (H) and CP-odd (A) neutral scalars are nearly degenerate in mass, and their s-channel production would lead to nearly overlapping resonances. CP-violating effects may connect these two Higgs bosons, giving origin to one-loop particle mixing, which, due to their mass proximity, can be resonantly enhanced, altering their lineshape significantly. We show that, in general, the effect of such a CP-violating mixing cannot be mimicked by (or be re-absorbed into) a simple redefinition of the H and A masses in the context of a CP-conserving model. Specifically, the effects of the CP-mixing are such that, either the mass-splitting…

Energy- and time-resolved microscopy using PEEM: recent developments and state-of-the-art

2008

Two novel methods of spectroscopic surface imaging are discussed, both based on photoemission electron microscopy PEEM. They are characterised by a simple electron-optical set up retaining a linear column. An imaging high-pass energy filter has been developed on the basis of lithographically-fabricated microgrids. Owing to a mesh size of only 7μm, no image distortions occur. The present energy resolution is 70 meV. The second approach employs time-of-flight energy dispersion and time-resolved detection using a Delayline Detector. In this case, the drift energy and the time resolution of the detector determine the energy resolution. The present time resolution is 180 ps, giving rise to an en…

Correlations between isospin dynamics and Intermediate Mass Fragments emission time scales: a probe for the symmetry energy in asymmetric nuclear mat…

2012

We show new data from the $^{64}$Ni+$^{124}$Sn and $^{58}$Ni+$^{112}$Sn reactions studied in direct kinematics with the CHIMERA detector at INFN-LNS and compared with the reverse kinematics reactions at the same incident beam energy (35 A MeV). Analyzing the data with the method of relative velocity correlations, fragments coming from statistical decay of an excited projectile-like (PLF) or target-like (TLF) fragments are discriminated from the ones coming from dynamical emission in the early stages of the reaction. By comparing data of the reverse kinematics experiment with a stochastic mean field (SMF) + GEMINI calculations our results show that observables from neck fragmentation mechani…

Revisiting a vector-tensor theory of gravitation

2011

A certain vector-tensor theory of gravitation has been recently studied. In this theory, the zero-order energy density of the vector field could play the role of dark energy. In such a case, the question is: could the theory explain current cosmological observations as well as the so-called concordance model? Previous papers on the subject only consider a reduced number of current observations. We consider a wider set of observations including supernovae of type Ia, cosmic microwave background anisotropies, and the power spectrum of the energy density fluctuations. Results imply that, for negligible scalar perturbations of the vector field, the theory does not work.

Determination of the B(E3, 0+ → 3−)-excitation strength in octupole-correlated nuclei near A ≈224 by the means of Coulomb excitation at REX-ISOLDE

2013

The IS475 collaboration conducted Coulomb-excitation experiments with postaccelerated radioactive 220Rn and 224Ra beams at the REX-ISOLDE facility. The beam particles (Ebeam ≈ 2.83 MeV/u) were Coulomb excited using 60Ni, 114Cd, and 120Sn scattering targets. De-excitation γ-rays were detected employing the Miniball array and scattered particles were detected in a silicon detector. Exploiting the Coulomb-excitation code GOSIA for each nucleus several matrix elements could be obtained from the measured γ-ray yields. The extracted 3−||Ê3||0+ matrix element allows for the conclusion that, while 220Rn represents an octupole vibrational system, 224Ra has already substantial octupole correlations i…
