Digital slicing of 3D scenes by Fourier filtering of integral images

We present a novel technique to extract depth information from 3D scenes recorded using an Integral Imaging system. The technique exploits the periodic structure of the recorded integral image to implement a Fourier-domain filtering algorithm. A proper projection of the filtered integral image permits reconstruction of different planes that constitute the 3D scene. The main feature of our method is that the Fourier-domain filtering allows the reduction of out-of-focus information, providing the InI system with real optical sectioning capacity.
Dynamic best spectral bands selection for face recognition

In this paper, face recognition in uncontrolled illumination conditions is investigated. A twofold contribution is proposed. First, three state-of-art algorithms, namely Multiblock Local Binary Pattern (MBLBP), Histogram of Gabor Phase Patterns (HGPP) and Local Gabor Binary Pattern Histogram Sequence (LGBPHS) are evaluated upon the IRIS-M3 face database to study their robustness against a high illumination variation conditions. This paper presents a novel texture descriptor based on the wavelet transform. First, we will consider vertical and horizontal coefficients at the same position as the components of a bivariate random vector. The magnitud and angle of these vectors are computed and its histograms are analyzed. This empirical magnitud histogram is modelled by using a gamma distribution (pdf). As a result, the feature extraction step consists of estimating the gamma parameters using the maxima likelihood estimator and computing the circular histograms of angles. The phase-only logarithmic radial harmonic (LRH) filter has been shown to be suitable for scale-invariant block object recognition. However, an important set of objects is the collection of contour functions that results from a digital edge extraction of the original block objects. These contour functions have a constant width that is independent of the scale of the original object. This paper presents a novel method for non-rigid registration of transrectal ultrasound and magnetic resonance prostate images based on a non-linear regularized framework of point correspondences obtained from a statistical measure of shape-contexts. The segmented prostate shapes are represented by shape-contexts and the Bhattacharyya distance between the shape representations is used to find the point correspondences between the 2D fixed and moving images. We develop a generic line matching method especially applicable to omnidirectional images taken from constructed scenes with short baseline motion where the motion of the imaging system between two views is mainly an arbitrary rotation and the translation of the camera between two views with respect to its distance to the imaged scene is negligible. We start by studying the relationship between images of lines on unitary sphere followed by proposing a simple algorithm for simultaneously matching vanishing points and lines. A stochastic shape and orientation model for fibres with an application to carbon nanotubes

Methods are introduced for analysing the shape and orientation of planar fibres from greyscale images of fibrous systems. The sequence of image processing techniques needed for segmentation of fibres is described. The identified fibres were interpreted as deformed line segments for which two shape and two orientation parameters are estimated by the maximum likelihood method. The methods introduced are shown to perform quite well for simulated systems of deformed line segments with known properties. They were applied to TEM images of carbon nanotubes embedded in polycarbonate.
Optical studies of laser-induced gray-tracking in KTP

We have studied gray-tracking induced by a pulsed and polarized 532-nm laser beam in flux grown KTiOPO/sub 4/ (KTP) crystals. Transmission spectra measured under polarized light give different results: gray-tracking leads to an increase in the initial anisotropy of the linear optical properties of KTP, and the polar axis is the most sensitive to this process. The dynamics of relaxation of gray-tracking is anisotropic and depends on the wavelength under analysis. We show a possible induced modification of the crystal surface and also the existence of an intensity above which gray-tracking reaches the saturation point. We then measure the temperature above which gray-tracking no longer exists.
Application of silicon-based camera for measurement of non-homogeneous thermal field on realistic specimen surface

Abstract The high-cost low-resolution infrared cameras operating in middle infrared spectral ranges are widely used to detect the thermal fields. In this study, a low-cost high-resolution silicon-based sensor camera operating in near infrared spectral ranges is used to perform the observation of the thermal fields on the realistic steel specimen surface. In near-infrared spectral ranges, a small temperature variation led to a large modification in the sensor illumination, inducing acquired images with over saturation or poor dynamic range of gray levels.
