Diagnosis of malaria must be rapid, accurate, simple to use, portable and low cost, as suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO). Despite recent efforts, the gold standard remains the light microscopy of a stained blood film. This method can detect low parasitemia and identify different species of Plasmodium. BACKGROUND Operating microscopes are essential for most neurosurgical procedures. Modern robot-assisted controls offer new possibilities, combining the advantages of conventional and automated systems. In this paper a novel embedded fingerprints authentication system based on core and delta singularity points detection is proposed. Typical fingerprint recognition systems use core and delta singularity points for classification tasks. On the other hand, the available optical and photoelectric sensors give high quality fingerprint images with well defined core and delta points, if they are present. A Novel Iris Recognition System based on Micro-Features

In this paper a novel approach for iris recognition system based on iris micro-features is proposed. The proposed system follows the minutiae based approach developed for fingerprint recognition systems. The proposed system uses four iris microfeatures, considered as minutiae, for identification. The individualized characteristics are nucleus, collarette, valleys and radius. Iris recognition is divided in three main phases: image preprocessing, micro-features extraction and matching. The algorithm has been tested on CASIA v1.0 iris image database obtaining an high accuracy. The obtained experimental results have been analyzed and compared with the Daugman based approach.
Performance evaluation of simple fingerprint minutiae extraction algorithm using crossing number on valley structure

In fingerprint recognition system, performance of fingerprint feature extraction algorithm is important. We use visual analysis to evaluate this performance. 100 respondents fill a questionnaire consisting of 30 images from fingerprint feature extraction process. We get 12,3 % minutiae points missed by this algorithm. With BOZORTH3 minutiae matching algorithm, the distribution of matching score of 80-fingerprint images are presented and we obtain EER 5.89 % at threshold value 180.
Image enhancement in simple fingerprint minutiae extraction algorithm using crossing number on valley structure

In fingerprint recognition system, fingerprint feature extraction algorithm requires good quality fingerprint images to produce good results. Therefore, one step in the preprocessing stage is image enhancement to improve the quality of poor fingerprint image, so the minutiae points can be detected with good results. In this paper, we present how this enhancement process in simple minutiae detection algorithm using crossing number on valley structure improves detection of true minutiae.

Electroencephalography (EEG) signals have been recently proposed as a biometrics modality due to some inherent advantages over traditional biometric approaches. In this work, we studied the performance of individual EEG channels for the task of subject identification in the context of EEG-based biometrics using a recently proposed benchmark dataset that contains EEG recordings acquired under various visual and non-visual stimuli using a low-cost consumer-grade EEG device. An Embedded Solution for Multispectral Palmprint Recognition

Palmprint based identification has attracted much attention in the past decades. In some real-life applications, portable personal authentication systems with high accuracy and speed efficiency are required. This paper presents an embedded palmprint recognition solution based on the multispectral image modality. We first develop an effective recognition algorithm by using partial least squares regression, then a FPGA prototype is implemented and optimized through high-level synthesis technique. The evaluation experiments demonstrate that the proposed system can achieve a higher recognition rate at a lower running cost comparing to the reference implementations.
Hybrid surface plasma modes in circular metal-coated tapered fibers

The theory of hybrid surface plasma modes in metal-coated dielectric cylinders has been developed in recent years. We demonstrate that tapered fibers with a uniform waist and a circular metal coating can be designed for an efficient excitation of the fundamental hybrid surface plasma mode. Our experimental results are in good agreement with the theory and give the basis for the development of a novel type of all-fiber polarization-independent refractive-index sensor and tunable broadband wavelength filter.
