Core-shifts and proper-motion constraints in the S5 polar cap sample at the 15 and 43 GHz bands

2018

We have studied a complete radio sample of active galactic nuclei with the very-long-baseline-interferometry (VLBI) technique and for the first time successfully obtained high-precision phase-delay astrometry atQband (43 GHz) from observations acquired in 2010. We have compared our astrometric results with those obtained with the same technique atUband (15 GHz) from data collected in 2000. The differences in source separations among all the source pairs observed in common at the two epochs are compatible at the 1σlevel betweenUandQbands. With the benefit of quasi-simultaneousUandQband observations in 2010, we have studied chromatic effects (core-shift) at the radio source cores with three d…

Ambiguity function analysis of pulse train propagation: applications to temporal Lau filtering

2007

We use the periodic-signal ambiguity function for visualizing the intensity-spectrum evolution through propagation in a first-order dispersive medium. We show that the degree of temporal coherence of the optical source plays the role of a low-pass filter on the signal's ambiguity function. Based on this, we present a condition on the temporal Lau effect for filtering harmonics at fractions of the Talbot length. This result allows one to increase the repetition rate of a pulse train obtained from a sinusoidally phase-modulated CW signal.

Incoherent frequency-to-time mapping: application to incoherent pulse shaping

2007

After temporal amplitude modulation of a spectrally incoherent optical source the averaged intensity profile at the so-called temporal far-zone regime coalesces with a magnified replica of the spectral density function of the source. This has provided the basis for the generalization of the frequency-to-time mapping technique in the partially coherent case. Based on this fact, temporal intensity waveform generation is demonstrated by spectral filtering the incoherent source before the temporal modulation stage. We refer to this technique as full incoherent pulse shaping. Although only the average intensity of the output signal is properly shaped, intensity fluctuations between the different…

HST observation of the inner coma of 2060 chiron

1995

Abstract The analysis of persistent comae of very large and distant comets allows us to infer the poorly known physical properties of dust and icy grains produced beyond Jupiter. Chiron is particularly interesting because Fulle ( Astron. Astrophys. 282 , 980–988; 1994) has shown that the strong asymmetricity of its coma (West, Astron. Astrophys. 241 , 635–645 1991) allows us to infer rotational properties of Chiron's nucleus. In this paper we report the observation of the asymmetric inner coma of Chiron from the analysis of 44 images of Chiron and eight images of a standard star available from the HST archive. The images were taken during February/March 1993, when Ch iron was 9.3 AU from th…

Angular shift of an electromagnetic beam reflected by a planar dielectric interface

1989

A mathematical procedure for obtaining theoretically an expression for the fields of a beam reflected by a planar interface separating two lossless, linear, isotropic, homogeneous media is presented. Comparison of this expression with that obtained when the beam undergoes reflection from a perfect conductor leads to the expression for the angular shift of the beam reflected by a planar dielectric interface. The cases of normal and parallel polarization of a microwave beam are considered. In the last case, a complete study for angles of incidence far and near the Brewster angle is made.

On the interpretation of optical illusions.

1973

If excited by stimuli adjacent in space and time, the optical system frequently perceives illusions in the form of apparent movements. These effects may be attributed to the dynamic properties of the retinal nerve nets. On the basis of a specific psychophysical experiment the mechanism underlying the generation of optical illusions is interpreted by the methods of systems theory and its use in systems analysis is discussed. It is shown that for the perception of apparent movements the transit times of the signals in the dendrites are particularly important.

Spectral anomalies in focused waves of different Fresnel numbers

2004

Light propagation induces remarkable changes in the spectrum of focused diffracted beams. We show that spectral changes take place in the vicinity of phase singularities in the focal region of spatially coherent, polychromatic spherical waves of different Fresnel numbers. Instead of the Debye formulation, we use the Kirchhoff integral to evaluate the focal field accurately. We find that as a result of a decrease in the Fresnel number, some cylindrical spectral switches are geometrically transformed into conical spectral switches.

Axial behavior of diffractive lenses under Gaussian illumination: complex-argument spectral analysis

1999

We present a general procedure to analyze the axial-irradiance distribution generated by an unlimited diffractive lens under coherent, Gaussian illumination. The resulting on-axis diffraction pattern, which is evaluated in terms of the power complex spectrum of the Fresnel-zone transmittance, explicitly depends on the truncation parameter that we define, which evaluates the effective number of zones illuminated by the Gaussian beam. Depending on the value of this parameter, different kinds of axial behavior are observed. In particular, for moderate values a multiple-focal-shift phenomenon appears, and a simple formula for its evaluation is presented. Additionally, for low values of the trun…

Asymmetric apodization in confocal scanning systems.

2008

A new class of superresolution pairs of pupil filters for three-dimensional, two-pupil confocal imaging is proposed. A distinctive feature of these filters is the asymmetry of their impulse response. For synthesizing the amplitude transmittance of such filters the Fourier transform properties of Hermitian functions are employed. It is shown that, with simple phase-only filters that belong to the class in question, either axial or unidirectional lateral superresolution is achieved.

Sampling expansions for three-dimensional light amplitude distribution in the vicinity of an axial image point: comment.

2003

Landgrave and Berriel-Valdos presented axial and radial sampling expansions for three-dimensional light amplitude distribution around the Gaussian focal point. [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 14, 2962 (1997)]. The expansions were obtained under the assumption that the pupil function was rotationally symmetric. We present a new derivation of the axial expansion that does not make use of arbitrary formal assumptions used by Landgrave and Berriel-Valdos and eliminates some faults of the derivation given by Arsenault and Boivin, who published this expansion in 1967 [J. Appl. Phys. 38, 3988 (1967)]. We also discuss generalizations of the axial expansion to the case of pupils that exhibit no symmetry with re…
