Suspension system performance optimization with discrete design variables

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00158-013-0888-7 Suspension systems on commercial vehicles have become an important feature meeting the requirements from costumers and legislation. The performance of the suspension system is often limited by available catalogue components. Additionally the suspension performance is restricted by the travel speed which highly influences the ride comfort. In this article a suspension system for an articulated dump truck is optimized in sense of reducing elapsed time for two specified duty cycles without violating a certain comfort th…

Adaptation of microphysical and chemical instrumentation to the airborne measuring platform Iljushin I1-18 ‘Cyclone’ and flight regime planning durin…

1997

Abstract In 1993 the joint Russian-German Research Project ‘Arctic Haze’ started (see the Introduction and editorial note of this issue, by Jaenicke, Khattatov, Jaeschke and Leiterer). Besides CAO, four German groups were involved. To the present three airborne measuring campaigns have been performed. In total 251 h of flight within altitudes up to 8.7 km were flown in the western and eastern part of the arctic leading to a comprehensive set of data of the northern arctic hemisphere. The measurements were conducted aboard the Russian research aircraft I1-18 ‘Cyclone’ which was used by CAO in numerous scientific projects mainly in the former USSR. This 4 engined turboprop aircraft is well eq…

A Measure of Trust: The Italian Regional Divide in a Latent Class Approach

2017

Social differences within countries may partly explain the lack of economic convergence and the persistence of regional disparities. The case of Italy is emblematic: economic gap between North and South remains at high levels with large differences in social capital and in trust. In this paper, we use the micro data from the ISTAT “Aspects of Daily Life” Survey to build a measure of “trust in others” and a measure of “trust in institutions” through a latent class model to attribute a trust score to the Italian households and the Italian regions and, in this way, to add elements of knowledge useful to policies. Our measures confirm a persistent territorial divide although the regional mappin…

UML Style Graphical Notation and Editor for OWL 2

2010

OWL is becoming the most widely used knowledge representation language. It has several textual notations but no standard graphical notation apart from verbose ODM UML. We propose an extension to UML class diagrams (heavyweight extension) that allows a compact OWL visualization. The compactness is achieved through the native power of UML class diagrams extended with optional Manchester encoding for class expressions thus largely eliminating the need for explicit anonymous class visualization. To use UML class diagram notation we had to modify its semantics to support Open World Assumption that is central to OWL. We have implemented the proposed compact visualization for OWL 2 in a UML style …

En lo que cabe and the limits of assertion

2019

The present work analyzes the expression en lo que cabe, construction in process of fixation as discursive operator that shows certain complexity in its construction …

Structural Vibration Control for a Class of Connected Multistructure Mechanical Systems

2012

Published version of an article from the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher:http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2012/942910 A mathematical model to compute the overall vibrational response of connected multistructure mechanical systems is presented. Using the proposed model, structural vibration control strategies for seismic protection of multibuilding systems can be efficiently designed. Particular attention is paid to the design of control configurations that combine passive interbuilding dampers with local feedback control systems implemented in the buildings. These hybrid active-passive control strategies possess the good properties of passive contro…

A Cost-Effective 3D Acquisition and Visualization Framework for Cultural Heritage

2020

Museums and cultural institutions, in general, are in a constant challenge of adding more value to their collections. The attractiveness of assets is practically tightly related to their value obeying the offer and demand law. New digital visualization technologies are found to give more excitements, especially to the younger generation as it is proven by multiple studies. Nowadays, museums around the world are currently trying to promote their collections through new multimedia and digital technologies such as 3D modeling, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and serious games. However, the difficulty and the resources required to implement such technologies present a real challen…

Road Functional Classification Using Pattern Recognition Techniques

2019

The existing international standards suggest a methodology to assign a specific functional class to a road, by the values of some features, both geometrical and use-related. Sometimes, these characteristics are in contrast with each other and direct the analyst towards conflicting classes for a road or, worse, one or more of these features vary heterogeneously along the road. In these conditions, the analyst assigns the class that, by his capability and experience, he retains the most appropriate, in a very subjective way. On the contrary, the definition of an automatic procedure assuring an objective identification of the most appropriate functional class for each road would be desirable. …

How Do Students Value the Importance of Twenty-first Century Skills?

2014

Frameworks of twenty-first century skills have attained a central role in school development and curriculum changes all over the world. There is a common understanding of the need for meta-skills such as problem solving, reasoning, collaboration, and self-regulation. This article presents results from a Finnish study, in which 718 school pupils aged 11 to 15 years were asked to anticipate the skills they would need in the future. Accordingly, they were asked to value and rank the twenty-first century skills listed in existing frameworks and pick out those they regarded as the most important they had learned. Social skills and collaboration were ranked highest, both in the listed frameworks …

Comparing Traditional and IRT Scoring of Forced-Choice Tests.

2018

This article explores how traditional scores obtained from different forced-choice (FC) formats relate to their true scores and item response theory (IRT) estimates. Three FC formats are considered from a block of items, and respondents are asked to (a) pick the item that describes them most (PICK), (b) choose the two items that describe them the most and the least (MOLE), or (c) rank all the items in the order of their descriptiveness of the respondents (RANK). The multi-unidimensional pairwise-preference (MUPP) model, which is extended to more than two items per block and different FC formats, is applied to obtain the responses to each item block. Traditional and IRT (i.e., expected a po…
