Looking in Depth: Visual Distance Perception of Stimuli on Volumetric Multi-Planar Display

2018

Ability to distinguish relative location of visual stimuli on a multi-planar display was evaluated within psychophysical experiment in order to figure out the impact of physical distance between stimuli across depth of volumetric data.

Colour vision experimental studies in teaching of optometry

2005

Following aspects related to human colour vision are included in experimental lessons for optometry students of University of Latvia. Characteristics of coloured stimuli (emitting and reflective), determination their coordinates in different colour spaces. Objective characteristics of transmitting of colour stimuli through the optical system of eye together with various types of appliances (lenses, prisms, Fresnel prisms). Psychophysical determination of mono- and polychromatic stimuli perception taking into account physiology of eye, retinal colour photoreceptor topography and spectral sensitivity, spatial and temporal characteristics of retinal receptive fields. Retinal image quality and visual stimuli processing by simulation of partial eye cataract

2016

Visual stimuli were demonstrated on a 4.3’’ mobile phone screen inside a “Virtual Reality” adapter that allowed separation of the left and right eye visual fields. Contrast of the retina image thus can be controlled by the image on the phone screen and parallel to that at appropriate geometry by the AC voltage applied to scattering PDLC cell inside the adapter. Such optical pathway separation allows to demonstrate to both eyes spatially variant images, that after visual binocular fusion acquire their characteristic indications. As visual stimuli we used grey and different color (two opponent components to vision – red-green in L*a*b* color space) spatially periodical stimuli for left and ri…

Image Content Enhancement Through Salient Regions Segmentation for People With Color Vision Deficiencies

2019

Color vision deficiencies affect visual perception of colors and, more generally, color images. Several sciences such as genetics, biology, medicine, and computer vision are involved in studying and analyzing vision deficiencies. As we know from visual saliency findings, human visual system tends to fix some specific points and regions of the image in the first seconds of observation summing up the most important and meaningful parts of the scene. In this article, we provide some studies about human visual system behavior differences between normal and color vision-deficient visual systems. We eye-tracked the human fixations in first 3 seconds of observation of color images to build real f…

Color stabilizes textbook visual processing

2011

We report that pages with color illustrations elicit more homogeneous duration of fixations in 12 elementary school children. For six first graders, we compared the reading of the color cover and a greyscale illustrated text page of an abcbook. For six second grade pupils, we demonstrated a color and a greyscale fairytale book page. The fixations we recorded are concordant with the duration for preschoolers reported elsewhere. Average duration of fixations on a page with color elements are shorter than on greyscale ones, 425 (SE=13.4) and 461 (18.3) ms, respectively. The correlation analysis lends support that a color page is processed differently than its greyscale version. Fixation durati…

Symmetry in Computer Vision

2002

Symmetry properties establish the invariance of a system to a given set of transformations. Physicists assign special meaning whenever symmetry is broken in nature; for example, groups of symmetry have been used to explain and predict the spatial organization of atoms in a crystal. Psychologists consider relevant the property of symmetry in the perception of visual signals. The paper will briefly describe different approaches, introduced in computer vision, to measure symmetry. A review of some applications at the Computer Vision Group (Department of Mathematics and Applications of Palermo University) is presented. They regard attentive visual processing, the analysis of faces, the recognit…

Previewing distracters enhances the efficiency of visual search. Watson and Humphreys (1997) proposed that the preview benefit rests on visual marking, a mechanism which actively encodes distracter locations at preview and inhibits them afterwards at search. As Watson and Humphreys did, we used a letter-color search task to study constraints of visual marking in conjunction search and near-efficient single-feature search with single-colored and homogeneous distracter letters. Search performance was measured for fixed target and distracter features (block design) and for randomly changed features across trials (random design). In single-feature search there was a full preview benefit for bot…

Visual Search Performance Depending on Target-Distractor Difference on Volumetric Display and Flat Panel Display

2019

The search items were demonstrated on the volumetric display and flat panel display. In contrast to the correct response rate, the search time and number of interactions were considerably affected by the type of visualization.

Visual grouping under isoluminant condition: impact of mental fatigue

2016

Instead of selecting arbitrary elements our visual perception prefers only certain grouping of information. There is ample evidence that the visual attention and perception is substantially impaired in the presence of mental fatigue. The question is how visual grouping, which can be considered a bottom-up controlled neuronal gain mechanism, is influenced. The main purpose of our study is to determine the influence of mental fatigue on visual grouping of definite information – color and configuration of stimuli in the psychophysical experiment. Individuals provided subjective data by filling in the questionnaire about their health and general feeling. The objective evidence was obtained in t…

What Conclusions does Rapid Image Classification by Eye Movements Provide for Machine Vision?

2008

Human ability to rapidly classify images of natural objects has been a matter of study for more than a decade. Recently eye movements have been exploited as a behavioural response, which has lead to alternative hypotheses of natural image processing. In this research, twelve volunteers made a movement towards a briefly displayed digital image if it was an animal, and a movement away otherwise. In both cases, the average response time was more than 400 milliseconds.
