Global Climatologies of Eulerian and Lagrangian Flow Features based on ERA-Interim

Abstract This paper introduces a newly compiled set of feature-based climatologies identified from ERA-Interim (1979–2014). Two categories of flow features are considered: (i) Eulerian climatologies of jet streams, tropopause folds, surface fronts, cyclones and anticyclones, blocks, and potential vorticity streamers and cutoffs and (ii) Lagrangian climatologies, based on a large ensemble of air parcel trajectories, of stratosphere–troposphere exchange, warm conveyor belts, and tropical moisture exports. Abstract In this study, a recently introduced feature-based quality measure called SAL, which provides information about the structure, amplitude, and location of a quantitative precipitation forecast (QPF) in a prespecified domain, is applied to different sets of synthetic and realistic QPFs in the United States. The focus is on a detailed discussion of selected cases and on the comparison of the verification results obtained with SAL and some classical gridpoint-based error measures. Surface temperature retrieval from Along Track Scanning Radiometer 2 data: Algorithms and validation

[1] A study has been carried out using MODTRAN 3.5 simulations of the Along Track Scanning Radiometer 2 (ATSR-2) data at 3.7, 11, and 12 μm wavelengths to give a range of algorithms for estimating surface. Making use of the dual-angle feature of the ATSR-2, algorithms based on dual-angle, split-window, and mixed structure have been considered. The coefficients of the algorithms are derived by regression analysis using the MATLAB code. Abstract The entire Piedmont of the Southeastern United States, where the Calhoun Critical Zone Observatory (CCZO) is located, experienced one of the most severe erosive events of the last two centuries. Forested areas were cleared to cultivate cotton, tobacco, and other crops during the nineteenth and early twentieth century and these land use changes, together with intense rainfalls, initiated deep gullying. An accurate mapping of these landforms is important since, despite some gully stabilization and reforestation efforts, gullies are still major contributors of sediment to streams. Effect of Camera Angle on Perception of Trust and Attractiveness

Film theories have long proposed that the vertical camera angle influences how the scene and the character in it are interpreted. An elevated camera (high-angle shot) should diminish the qualities of the actor, whereas a lowered camera (low-angle shot) should elevate the actor in perspective as well as in the viewer’s opinion. We were interested in how this holds up for the impression of trustworthiness and attractiveness that the spectator receives of the actor. We filmed 12 actors in a scenario inspired by a TV show called Split or Steal, which features a one-time version of the prisoner’s dilemma. Fully automatic face recognition system using a combined audio-visual approach

This paper presents a novel audio and video information fusion approach that greatly improves automatic recognition of people in video sequences. To that end, audio and video information is first used independently to obtain confidence values that indicate the likelihood that a specific person appears in a video shot. Finally, a post-classifier is applied to fuse audio and visual confidence values. The system has been tested on several news sequences and the results indicate that a significant improvement in the recognition rate can be achieved when both modalities are used together.

Visuo-auditory sensory substitution systems are augmented reality devices that translate a video stream into an audio stream in order to help the blind in daily tasks requiring visuo-spatial information. In this work, we present both a new mobile device and a transcoding method specifically designed to sonify moving objects. Frame differencing is used to extract spatial features from the video stream and two-dimensional spatial information is converted into audio cues using pitch, interaural time difference and interaural level difference. This article focuses on the many instances when minute details found in feature films may have direct implications upon the development of both the visual and plot narratives. The main question we would like to ask examines whether very subtle details which may easily go unnoticed by the viewer should be audio described. To assess the visual consciousness of such minute details, a perception experiment was conducted using eye-tracking technology and questionnaires.
