Digital Education For All: Multi-University Study of Increasing Competent Student Admissions at Scale
2022
An indubitable way to put learning at scale in practice is to implement Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs. When a wide-enough portfolio of them is available, new applications arise. For instance, university admissions in Finland, where this study was conducted, have traditionally been based on students' grades in high school studies, an entrance examination, or a combination of both. A minority of students have been accepted through an open university admission path where students can get a study right if they complete enough university course credits with a high enough grade in a given time frame. In this work, we report results from a multi-university project in which the open univers…
Multi-parameter analysis of the obstacle scattering problem
2022
Abstract We consider the acoustic field scattered by a bounded impenetrable obstacle and we study its dependence upon a certain set of parameters. As usual, the problem is modeled by an exterior Dirichlet problem for the Helmholtz equation Δu + k 2 u = 0. We show that the solution u and its far field pattern u ∞ depend real analytically on the shape of the obstacle, the wave number k, and the Dirichlet datum. We also prove a similar result for the corresponding Dirichlet-to-Neumann map.
Octave Spanning Supercontinuum in Titanium Dioxide Waveguides
2018
International audience; We report on the experimental generation of an octave-spanning supercontinuum in a 2.2 cm-long titanium dioxide optical waveguide with two zero dispersion wavelengths. The resulting on-chip supercontinuum reaches the visible wavelength range as well as the mid-infrared region by using a femtosecond fiber laser pump at 1.64 µm.
Semi-blind Source Extraction Methods: Application to the measurement of non-contact physiological signs
2018
Non-contact physiological measurements are highlydesirable in many biomedical fields such asdiagnosis of infants, geriartic patients, patients withextreme physical trauma, and fitness and well-being.Remote photoplethysmography is increasingly beingused for non-contact measurement of heart rate fromvideos which is one of the most common biomedicalproperty required for most medical diagnosis. Oneof the common techniques for performing remotephotoplethysmography involves using Blind SourceSeparation (BSS) methods to extract the cardiacsignal from video data.In this context, the objective of this thesis is todevelop different methods in the field of extractionand separation of sources by improv…
Hypervisor-assisted Atomic Memory Acquisition in Modern Systems
2019
Reliable memory acquisition is essential to forensic analysis of a cyber-crime. Various methods of memory acquisition have been proposed, ranging from tools based on a dedicated hardware to software only solutions. Recently, a hypervisor-based method for memory acquisition was proposed (Qi et al., 2017; Martignoni et al., 2010). This method obtains a reliable (atomic) memory image of a running system. The method achieves this by making all memory pages non-writable until they are copied to the memory image, thus preventing uncontrolled modification of these pages. Unfortunately, the proposed method has two deficiencies: (1) the method does not support multiprocessing and (2) the method does…
Integrating STEM-related Technologies into Mathematics Education at Large Scale
2020
This paper outlines the growing phenomenon and need to integrate technologies into mathematics and science teaching and learning. There are a number of successful projects for valuable integration of technologies around the world, however, these successes are often limited reaching a relatively small number of teachers and students. In this paper, we aim to offer examples of large-scale technology projects that could create a critical mass of users that could further drive innovation and sustainability for educational technology integration. We outline how GeoGebra became one of the most widely used dynamic mathematics software with a user base of more than 100 million; highlight directions…
Tietotekniikan valtakunnallisten oppisisältöjen toteutuminen Keski-Suomen peruskoulujen opetuskäytänteissä
2017
Tutkimus sai alkunsa kiinnostuksesta uusia Perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelman perusteita kohtaan. Vuonna 2014 hyväksytty POPS asettui erityisesti tieto- ja viestintätekniikan opetuksen osalta vastaamaan perusopetuksessa havaittuihin puutteisiin ja ongelmiin. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää mitä uusia sisältöjä POPS14 tuo tietotekniikan opetukseen sekä kuinka noiden sisältöjen opetus toteutuu koulujen arjessa. Tutkimuksessa tunnistettiin tyypilliset ja yleisesti käytössä olevat TVT:n opetusmenetelmät ja niitä pyrittiin kuvailemaan laadullisen tutkimuksen keinoin. Tavoitteeseen päästiin lähinnä Opetushallituksen julkaisuihin kohdistuneen kirjallisuuskatsauksen, Keski-Suomen peruskouluj…
TPACK and Educational Interactions : Pillars of Successful Technology Integration
2019
It is important to understand what drives the success of technology integration in educational settings, because learning in schools with technology develops the students' capacities to participate fully in the digital age. Educated students, in turn, can transform our societies through innovative scientific discoveries. Recently, the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework has emerged as a theoretical framework needed for understanding the teacher’s integration of digital technologies into teaching. Educational interactions, in turn, have been emphasized as a critical component of the educational practices, processes and contexts. However, these two concepts have been…
Hume’s Guillotine in Designing Ethically Intelligent Technologies
2020
Intelligent machines can follow ethical rules in their behaviour. However, it is less clear whether intelligent systems can also create new ethical principles. The former position can be called weak ethical AI and the latter strong ethical AI. Hume’s guillotine which claims that one cannot derive values from facts appears to be a fundamental obstacle to strong ethical AI. The analysis of human ethical information processes provides clarity to the possibility of strong ethical AI. Human ethical information processing begins with positive of negative emotions associated to situations. Situations can be seen as consequences of actions and for this reason people can define rules about acceptabi…
