Awareness and partitional information structures
1994
This is the first of two papers where we present a formal model of unawareness. We contrast unawareness with certainty and uncertainty. A subject is certain of something when he knows that thing; he is uncertain when he does not know it, but he knows he does not: he is consciously uncertain. On the other hand, he is unaware of something when he does not know it, and he does not know he does not know, and so on ad infinitum: he does not perceive, does not have in mind, the object of knowledge. The opposite of unawareness is awareness, which includes certainty and uncertainty. This paper has three main purposes. First, we formalize the concept of awareness, and introduce a symmetry axiom whic…
Illusion of knowledge through Facebook news? Effects of snack news in a news feed on perceived knowledge, attitude strength, and willingness for disc…
2020
Abstract Research indicates that using social network sites as a source for news increases perceived knowledge even if, objectively, people fail to acquire knowledge. This might result from the frequent repetition of topics in news posts caused by multiple news outlets posting about the same news topics and the algorithm that favors similar postings. These repeated encounters can have a positive effect on the perception of knowing more, even if actual learning hardly occurs. An experiment (N = 810, representative of German Internet users) tested these assumptions. Participants were assigned to one of four groups and received a news feed with no information, few news posts, many news posts, …
Kształcenie umiejętności efektywnego słuchania na lekcjach języka polskiego
2015
The aim of this article is to verify the way in which authors of school textbooks propose develop listening comprehension in Polish language lessons. The author, after discussing the specifics of listening within an interpersonal communication and detailed perceptual skills, sets objectives of improving the auditory reception in Polish language education. Subsequently, she presents an analysis of didactic tasks that are classified according to a perceptual skill which are being developed. The article finishes with the presentation of a model of developing listening comprehension that emerges from selected school textbooks.
Brief History of Computer Art and New Media Art in Latvia
2011
The Soviet and particularly Latvian computer art is not a well-known topic of digital art history. This paper attempts to analyze this computer art in context of the 20th century art, considering the political circumstances in Soviet Union. At the turn of the 21st century after gaining the independence new media art examples and collaboration between scientists, computer scientists, software programmers and the artists are to be found in Latvia. Some recent media art events are mentioned from this viewpoint.
Factors Influencing Lower Secondary School Pupils’ Success in Programming Projects in Scratch
2020
In the Czech Republic, a radical change in the school curriculum is planned. Through a new, compulsory subject of “Informatics and ICT”, the aim is to develop digital literacy across all school subjects, and computational thinking. Computational thinking will be implemented in the curriculum of pre-primary, primary, lower and upper secondary schools, and in teacher education at all faculties of education in the Czech Republic. To ensure readiness for the implementation of the new subject, it has been necessary to prepare and develop a set of learning materials for pupils and teaching guidelines for teachers. These textbooks focus on robotics, programming (Scratch, Python), and theoretical c…
Persistence and turnover in regional unemployment disparities
1998
PEHKONEN J. and TERVO H. (1998) Reg. Studies, 32 , 445-458, Persistence and turnover in regional unemployment disparities. This study investigates persistence and turnover in regional unemployment disparities in Finland by examining time-series data on 10 labour districts and 423 municipalities. The data on the labour districts indicates that regional unemployment disparities are rather persistent and that steady-state unemployment rates differ considerably across the districts. The results on the municipality level data, however, suggest the presence of substantial intra-distribution dynamics and that the degree of persistence is less profound than the labour district data indicates. In al…
Association between genetic variations in the insulin/insulin-like growth factor (Igf-1) signaling pathway and longevity: a systematic review and met…
2013
Some studies have shown that polymorphisms in the insulin growth factor-1 (IGF-1) signaling pathway genes could influence human longevity. However, the results of different studies are often inconsistent. Our aim was to investigate by systematic review and meta-analysis the association of the common polymorphisms defining the genetic variability of the IGF-1 signaling pathway associated with human longevity. Eleven studies investigating the association between the polymorphisms in the IGF-1 signaling pathway genes (IGF-1, IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R), Forkhead box O3A (FOXO3A) and Silent mating type Information Regulation 1 (SIRT1) and longevity were found and analyzed. The modelfree approach wa…
The influence of familiarity among group members, group atmosphere and assertiveness on uninhibited behavior through three different communication me…
2000
The study of the influence of new information technologies (NIT) on verbal communication has attracted attention from researchers. Results obtained in previous studies suggest that NIT communication media produce a deindividualization in group processes that enhances uninhibited behavior and flaming. However, identity theory emphasizes the role of social context, challenging the interpretation that features of the media are the main antecedent of this behavior. The aim of the present paper is threefold: (1) to empirically test whether there are significant differences in the frequency of uninhibited behavior in groups working under face-to-face, videoconference and computer-mediated communi…
Principled animation design improves comprehension of complex dynamics
2016
International audience; Learners can have difficulty in decomposing conventionally designed animations to obtain raw material suitable for building high quality mental models. A composition approach to designing animations based on the Animation Processing Model was developed as a principled alternative to prevailing approaches. Outcomes from studying novel and conventional animation designs (independent variable) were compared with respect to mental model quality, knowledge of local kinematics, and capacity to transfer (dependent variables). Study of a compositional animation that presented material in a contiguous fashion resulted in higher quality mental models of a piano mechanism than …

Ultrasmall polyaminocarboxylate-coated gold nanoparticles (NPs), Au@DTDTPA and Au@TADOTAGA, that have been recently developed exhibit a promising potential for image-guided radiotherapy. In order to render the radiosensitizing effect of these gold nanoparticles even more efficient, the study of their localization in cells is required to better understand the relation between the radiosensitizing properties of the agents and their localization in cells and in tumors. To achieve this goal, post-functionalization of Au@DTDTPA nanoparticles by near-infrared (NIF) organic dyes (aminated derivative of cyanine 5, Cy5-NH2) was performed. The immobilization of organic Cy5-NH2 dyes onto the gold nano…
