Naturalistic study on the usage of smartphone applications among Finnish drivers
2018
We present results from a naturalistic study that tracked how Finnish drivers use their smartphones while on the move. We monitored 30 heavy in-car smartphone users in Finland during June–September 2016, recording the times that they used their phones, the application used at the time of touch (calls excluded), the location and driving speed. Touches per time unit were used as a proxy for estimating visual-manual distraction due to visual-manual tasks. Our data set allows the determining of whether drivers use their phones differently on varying road types (highway, main road, local rural road, urban road). We found that the road type has an effect on phone use but the effect is contrary to…
MRF Model-Based Approach for Image Segmentation Using a Chaotic MultiAgent System
2006
In this paper, we propose a new Chaotic MultiAgent System (CMAS) for image segmentation. This CMAS is a distributed system composed of a set of segmentation agents connected to a coordinator agent. Each segmentation agent performs Iterated Conditional Modes (ICM) starting from its own initial image created initially from the observed one by using a chaotic mapping. However, the coordinator agent receives and diversifies these images using a crossover and a chaotic mutation. A chaotic system is successfully used in order to benefit from the special chaotic characteristic features such as ergodic property, stochastic aspect and dependence on initialization. The efficiency of our approach is s…
A voice-activated key for the Apple Macintosh computer
1989
An interface circuit to connect a microphone to an Apple Macintosh computer is described. The Apple Macintosh mouse port is used as the input port, and the microphone activation simulates a mouse press.
Improving the performance of CAR systems based on mobile phones
2013
Collaborative Augmented Reality (CAR) systems allow multiple users to share a real work environment including computer-generated images in real time. Currently, the hardware features of most mobile phones makes them a natural platform for CAR systems. However, the wide variety of these hardware features can have important effects on the performance of the mobile CAR applications. This thesis proposes a performance characterization and improvement of CAR systems based on mobile phones. The research results, at the time of writing this paper, shows that a CAR system using mobile phones as clients and with a single server can support up to one thousand clients while providing interactive respo…
A Rule-Based Multi-agent System for Road Traffic Management
2009
Road Traffic presents a high dynamism which makes necessary the development of traffic management and control strategies to improve traffic flows and more important, road safety. This dynamism makes necessary the use of intelligent systems to support traffic organizations and road operators to cope with incidents. In this paper we introduce a new expert system to support traffic management when weather problems occur in the road network. The system uses multiagent technology to work with the specific characteristics of traffic domain and is able to work in two modes: a) coordinately, where all the agents works to solve problems in large networks and b) locally where due to communications pr…
A mechanical model of the smartphone’s accelerometer
2015
To increase the attention of students, several physics experiments can be performed at school, as well at home, by using the smartphone as laboratory tools. In the paper we describe a mechanical model of the smartphone's accelerometer, which can be used in classroom to allow students to better understand the principle of the accelerometer even by students at the beginning of the study in physics.
Single and two-qubit dynamics in circuit QED architectures
2008
In this paper we overview our researches on the generation and the control of entangled states in the framework of circuit quantum electrodynamics. Applications in the context of quantum computing and quantum information theory are discussed.
How Do Schr\"odinger's Cats Die?
2008
Recent experiments with superconducting qubits are motivated by the goal of fabricating a quantum computer, but at the same time they illuminate the more fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics. In this paper we analyze the physics of switching current measurements from the point of view of macroscopic quantum mechanics.
Citizens AND HYdrology (CANDHY) : conceptualizing a transdisciplinary framework for citizen science addressing hydrological challenges
2021
Widely available digital technologies are empowering citizens who are increasingly well informed and involved in numerous water, climate, and environmental challenges. Citizen science can serve many different purposes, from the "pleasure of doing science" to complementing observations, increasing scientific literacy, and supporting collaborative behaviour to solve specific water management problems. Still, procedures on how to incorporate citizens' knowledge effectively to inform policy and decision-making are lagging behind. Moreover, general conceptual frameworks are unavailable, preventing the widespread uptake of citizen science approaches for more participatory cross-sectorial water go…
Quantum Property Testing for Bounded-Degree Graphs
2011
We study quantum algorithms for testing bipartiteness and expansion of bounded-degree graphs. We give quantum algorithms that solve these problems in time O(N^(1/3)), beating the Omega(sqrt(N)) classical lower bound. For testing expansion, we also prove an Omega(N^(1/4)) quantum query lower bound, thus ruling out the possibility of an exponential quantum speedup. Our quantum algorithms follow from a combination of classical property testing techniques due to Goldreich and Ron, derandomization, and the quantum algorithm for element distinctness. The quantum lower bound is obtained by the polynomial method, using novel algebraic techniques and combinatorial analysis to accommodate the graph s…
