A Bayesian Mixed-Methods Analysis of Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction through Outdoor Learning and Its Influence on Motivational Behavior in Sc…
2017
Research has shown that outdoor educational interventions can lead to students' increased self-regulated motivational behavior. In this study, we searched into the satisfaction of basic psychological needs (BPN), i.e., autonomy support, the learners' experience of competence, and relatedness, both within the peer group and with their teachers, through outdoor learning. From 2014 to 2016, n = 281 students attended “research weeks” at a Student Science Lab in the Alpine National Park Berchtesgaden (Germany). The program is a curriculum-based one-week residential course, centered on a 2-day research expedition. Both before and after the course, students completed a composite questionnaire addr…
Actual and Potential Pedagogical Use of Tablets in Schools
2013
This study reviews the potential of tablet technology for teaching and learning. In autumn 2012, we conducted a focused survey comprising quantitative and qualitative questions with Finnish teachers (N = 171, from 54 schools). We focused on perceived pedagogical opportunities and the actualized pedagogical potential of tablets at schools. The survey results indicate that the actual usefulness of tablets in schools was significantly less than what teachers perceived as the pedagogical potential. However, the results demonstrate the positive impact these devices are having on teaching and learning, as well as prompting changes in pedagogical perspectives. Teachers stated that tablets can dive…
Designing for virtual mobility: Potentials and caveats
2019
This paper reflects on the joint pilot development and implementation of an international master level online course in Educational Design by three universities from different European countries. The pilot targeted curriculum internationalization and provision of international learning experiences to students with less mobility opportunities through online learning and use of technology. The key focus was on connecting students from different countries by collaborative learning and working on an authentic task in the professional domain of their study - educational media design - via a joint platform and digital media. In small international groups, students collaboratively developed mobile…
“Ihmisiltä poissa” – away from people : language learning spaces in Finnish as a foreign language students’ chat during the covid-19 pandemic
2020
Smart phones enable learners to practice language use in different spaces and environments beyond the classroom. Finnish language students in two North American universities participated in a collaborative chat project as part of their second-year language course. In this article we analyze how students' chat entries reflected their learning in different domestic spaces during the global covid-19 pandemic in spring 2020. nonPeerReviewed
From canon to chaos management : blogging as a learning tool in a modern Finnish literature course
2015
This article is based on the teaching experiment implemented in summer 2013 in a modern Finnish literature course organised by the Centre for International Mobility (CIMO) and the University of Jyväskylä Language Centre. In order to break away from the traditional conception of literature and text, students’ independent blogging was chosen as the final course assignment instead of a traditional final project. Our aim has been to determine what blogging as an activity can add to second-language learning (i.e. learning the language in a country where it is spoken as a native language) in the context of modern Finnish literature. Our special interest is how new learning environments and approa…
Regional currencies and regional monetary zones in Latin America : what prospects ?
2009
9 p.; This paper aims at drawing lessons from Keynes's plan presented at the Bretton Woods conference, in order to help improving current regional monetary agreements in Latin America. Some promoters of the Bank of the South and the New Financial Architecture in Latin America are proposing to implement a regional clearing system designed to allow a multilateral offsetting of the liabilities and assets generated in the reciprocal transactions of member countries in words that the British economist certainly would not have denied. This system would be very different from current regional payments aggreements that maintain an implicit reference to the US dollar as reserve or payment currency.
Toimijuus ja asiantuntijaksi kasvaminen monimediaisessa kielenopettamisessa
2011
This case study investigates the role of agency in the development of two students’ expertise during their participation in the year-long KOO-KIT program (Language Technology for Language Teachers) for pre-service language teachers at the Centre for Applied Language Studies of the University of Jyväskylä in the 2000s. The curriculum of the program was organized around project-based learning, with theoretical and pedagogical lessons and hands-on technology courses alternating with practical team work in web-based design. The data consist of the teachers’ observations and narrative assessments of the students’ performance, and the students’ self-reports during the one-year course. The finding…
Enhancing the performance of HSDPA communication with multipoint transmission techniques
2015
The evolution of mobile phones, tablets and other mobile communication devices has led to a significant increase in the amount of data delivered over mobile networks. In order to satisfy the climbing data rate demands of customers, existing mobile broadband networks are being expanded with new features that allow ubiquitous and consistent networking experience. This research presents three multipoint transmission techniques for Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) based High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) communication protocol. Multiflow, High-Speed Single-Frequency Network (HS-SFN) and Multipoint-to-Point Single-Frequency Network (M2P-SFN) enable transmission of user-dedicat…
A Pilot Study on Developing Newsgames in Collaboration between Journalism and Computer Science Students
2019
Abstract Producing digital and interactive journalistic products offers unique and important new learning opportunities for journalism education. This study analysed the experiences of two pilot courses on so-called ‘newsgames’ in a Finnish university in 2015 and 2017. The data consisted of the newsgames and other materials produced by the students, student feedback concerning the course and observations of teachers throughout the project. Our analysis demonstrates how producing newsgames in the context of higher education may foster project-based learning experiences, something that has been relatively rare in traditional journalism education. Collaboration with media companies also offere…
