The influence of variables of attitude on collective entrepreneurship
In the current global corporate climate that surrounds us, firms would do well to encourage the talent and creativity of their employees in order to achieve success. This is achieved, not by giving priority to individual talent, but by optimizing the collective as a whole and the firm¿s activity based on team work and joint effort. Heads of organizations might benefit from creating a favorable context for the birth and growth of collective internal cooperation, which is understood to be the collective ability to create and innovate on the part of the team, the firm or the organization. Having contrasted our hypotheses through research on Spanish firms, we have concluded that job satisfactio…
Challenges in developing in-service teacher training: Lessons learnt from two projects for teachers of Swedish in Finland
2017
Teacher education in Finland is widely respected and of high quality. However, there is a recognised need to develop the educational continuum from pre-service education to in-service training. This article deals with challenges connected to in-service teacher training. Based on two projects, consisting of seven one-month courses for teachers of Swedish in Finland, we reflect on the challenges we encountered during the three-year process. In our research, theory and practice, but also data and methods, have been intertwined, as we have studied the phenomenon by using exploratory practice (Allwright, 2003). The projects and the study were based on a thorough literature review. During the pla…
What Doesn’t Work for the Lowest Level Literacy Learners and Why?
2013
Traditional approaches for teaching reading to Low Educated Second Language and Literacy Acquisition (LESLLA) adults are problematic because foundational learning and cognitive areas are generally underdeveloped in these students. Three methods for reading instruction (phonics, sight words and whole language) are explored in light of the LESLLA learner. Task analyses are undertaken for each method, and gaps present in LESLLA learners are revealed. The task analysis method is advocated for lesson planning, and a recommendation is made for teachers to consider what is being expected of students when activities are presented. Educators must be reminded that LESLLA learners are likely to be pre…
Tasapainoilua kurinalaisuuden ja tarkoituksenmukaisuuden välillä : oppilaiden ei-toivottuun käyttäytymiseen liittyvän ongelmanratkaisun kehittäminen …
1999
This qualitative study explores the problem-solving culture associated with students' challenging behavior in an upper comprehensive school (ages 13 to 16). Based on the findings, new possibilities are suggested for developing the problem- solving culture in the Comprehensive School. The data consist of interviews, written stories by the participants, videotapes of the student welfare team meetings, official documents, and open answers to a questionnaire. Data were gathered from teachers, other school personnel, students, and students' parents. Data were organized around four themes: (1)definition of the situation, (2)sense of community, (3)social control, and (4)dealing with the student'…
From Procedures to Objects: A Research Agenda for the Psychology of Object-Oriented Programming Education
2008
Programming education has experienced a shift from imperative and procedural programming to object-orientation. This shift has been motivated by educators’ desire to please the information technology industry and potential students; it is not motivated by research either in psychology of programming or in computer science education. There are practically no results that would indicate that such a shift is desirable, needed in the first place, or even effective for learning programming. Moreover, there has been an implicit assumption that classic results on imperative and procedural programming education and learning apply to object-oriented programming (OOP) as well. We argue that this is n…

Improvements and applications of the elements of prototype-based clustering
2018
Clustering or cluster analysis is an essential part of data mining, machine learning, and pattern recognition. The most popularly applied clustering methods are partitioning-based or prototype-based methods. Prototype-based clustering methods usually have easy implementability and good scalability. These methods, such as K-means clustering, have been used for different applications in various fields. On the other hand, prototype-based clustering methods are typically sensitive to initialization, and the selection of the number of clusters for knowledge discovery purposes is not straightforward. In the era of big data, in high-velocity, ever-growing datasets, which can also be erroneous, outl…
Enriching primary student teachers’ conceptions about science teaching : Towards dialogic inquiry-based teaching
2011
Inquiry-based teaching has been at the heart of science education since it was first outlined in national standards over a decade ago. The general idea behind the inquiry guidelines is that pupils would adopt ways of conducting science, in addition to conceptually learning, thus attaining also the epistemological dimension of science. Although curricula are based on these ideas of inquiry, all too often authentic inquiry is hindered by overly authoritative approaches and teacher directions. To avoid this, the communicational ways in which teachers can encourage pupil reasoning during different phases of inquiry should be explicitly addressed. This paper addresses this gap by introducing a d…
ICT in Chilean Schools: Students' and Teachers' Access and Use of ICT
2005
This paper presents the results of the analysis of the data from a national survey of the Chilean educational ICT infrastructure and its use in schools implemented by the Centre for Technology and Education of the Chilean Ministry of Education in 2004. Results show that the context of ICT use in Chilean schools can be characterized as relatively good, insofar as there are no first-order barriers for implementing ICT pedagogy. In this context, students’ ICT use can be categorized based on four factors: communication, productivity, recreation, and communication with teachers. On the other hand, teachers’ ICT use can be categorized using three factors: communication, teaching, and technical. B…
