Communication versus waterproofing: the physics of insect cuticular hydrocarbons

Understanding the evolution of complex traits is among the major challenges in biology. One such trait is the cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) layer in insects. It protects against desiccation and provides communication signals, especially in social insects. CHC composition is highly diverse within and across species. To understand the adaptive value of this chemical diversity, we must understand how it affects biological functionality. So far, CHCs received ample research attention, but their physical properties were little studied. Providing that appropriate carbon substrates are available, microbial communities are able to develop a range of activities which are crucial in maintaining a biological balance in soil (Bowen and Rovira 1999), a key issue for the sustainability of either natural ecosystems or agroecosystems (Kennedy and Smith 1995). The interplay of landscape composition and configuration: new pathways to manage functional biodiversity and agroecosystem services across Europe

Managing agricultural landscapes to support biodiversity and ecosystem services is a key aim of a sustainable agriculture. However, how the spatial arrangement of crop fields and other habitats in landscapes impacts arthropods and their functions is poorly known. Synthesising data from 49 studies (1515 landscapes) across Europe, we examined effects of landscape composition (% habitats) and configuration (edge density) on arthropods in fields and their margins, pest control, pollination and yields. Effects of temperature on persistence times of native and invasive gammarid species in the stomachs of Cottus gobio

Gastric lavage was used to investigate the effects of temperature on persistence time of two amphipod species, one native Gammarus pulex and one invasive Gammarus roeseli, in the stomachs of bullhead Cottus gobio. Persistence time was strongly influenced by temperature and prey type, such that G. pulex species degraded faster than G. roeseli.

Rapid range extension of the Ponto-Caspian amphipod Dikerogammarus villosus in France: potential consequences

Non-indigenous species are increasingly recognized as altering local com- munities in newly colonized areas. In some north European freshwater systems, the Ponto-Caspian invasive crustacean Dikerogammarus villosus (Amphipoda) is im- plicated to have such an effect, with general monitoring of its progress and general im- pact required. The present study contributes to this monitoring. D. villosus was ob- served in 2003 in all the major French rivers prospected (i.e. Rhine, Meuse, Moselle, Sao ne, Rho ne, Seine, and Loire), a European region previously overlooked for its co- lonization. The role of volatile stimuli in the host-searching behaviour of the two parasitoid species Lysiphlebus testaceipes Cresson and Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was studied in relation to the host Aphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera: Aphididae) on cucumber plants, Cucumis sativa L. (Cucurbitaceae). Pulsed electric field and pH assisted selective extraction of intracellular components from microalgae Nannochloropsis

Abstract The study was aimed at investigation of the potential of pulsed electric field (PEF) pre-treatment as a preliminary step of pH-assisted aqueous extraction of algae components from microalgae Nannochloropsis suspensions. The PEF and sonication (S) were compared as pretreatment methods. They were applied at normal (pH = 8.5) and basic (pH = 11) conditions, and supplementary basic extraction (at pH = 11) was done. The extracts were analyzed for content of pigments, proteins, carbohydrates, total phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity.
