Study guidance experiences, study progress, and perceived learning outcomes of Finnish university students

2019

In recent decades, the massification and diversification of higher education have generated new challenges for the guidance of university students. The present study focuses on students’ experiences of guidance in relation to their study progress and perceptions of their learning outcomes. The data (n = 4916) were collected from 2010–2013 through yearly Internet surveys whose targeted respondents were the students of a Finnish University. According to the results, general study guidance was a very strong predictor of students’ self-assessed development of their academic and generic skills as well as working life orientation. It also decreased the probability of slow progress in studies. Sig…

Rethinking Learning Design in IT Education During a Pandemic

2021

Maintaining high-quality teaching and learning in the times of a pandemic poses a huge challenge to education systems. To scaffold adequate practices in our courses during the pandemic, more advanced, and fine-grained “learning design” is needed than providing the learning objectives and learning materials of the course and defining the deliverables and assignments. In this paper, we leverage on our experience with putting into practice different learning designs and technologies, in various information technology (IT) contexts and discuss how IT educators can further reflect on the learning design of their courses and scaffold fully remote or blended learning approaches to accommodate thei…

We havethose visual learners, those who learn through seeing things, auditory learners, thosewho learn best through hearing and kinesthetic learners, those who learn by doing.Augmented reality can provide many unique affordances that can deliver a learningexperience that can benefit all learning types. Processing limitations in L2 fluency: Analysis of inaccuracies in lexical access

2017

Oral fluency is widely included in second language assessments, but its relationship to language proficiency is not straightforward. In the current study, data gathered in an experimental setting were examined with an exploratory fluency analysis. The aim was to examine the relationship between fluency of lexical access and proficiency in foreign language (L2). Fluency of the lexical access was studied by analysing inaccuracies in one word recognition and one word retrieval task. To see if proficiency had an effect on the number and the type of inaccuracies, lexical access tasks were carried out for 563 Finnish school children from grades 4, 8, and 11 in their L2 (English). Proficiency in L…

TEACHER’S SELF-DEVELOPMENT: TEACHER’S SELF-DISCOVERIES REGARDING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF PEDAGOGICAL PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT DURING PEDAGOGICAL PRACTICE

2019

In the 21st century, a special place in education is occupied by sustainable development issues, which emphasize the unique role of education in shaping the public opinion. New pedagogical approaches, which show how education could contribute to the evolution of consciousness, are being sought. A shift of paradigms is happening in education: from knowledge memorization to skills, character, meta-learning (Education 2030: Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development competency framework). The research confirms, to successfully implement the proposed changes in modern pedagogical practice, it is valuable for the teachers to learn the psychology methods and techniques on how to improv…

Young People's Emerging Multilingual Practices : Learning Language or Literacy, or Both?

2019

Research on language learning and research on literacy are typically seen as two separate strands of enquiry and thus the concepts of language and literacy have traditionally been kept apart. This is partly due to epistemological questions related to language and literacy. In this chapter, I will discuss these concepts in the context of multilingualism. Approaching multilingual language use from the perspective of literacy practices enables us to look beyond language to social practices and to examine the relationship between the concepts of language and literacy, literacy practices and language learning. Two data sets are used to illustrate how language, literacy, and language learning are…

Converging Perspectives in the LESLLA Context

2013

There has been a surge in Low Educated Second Language and Literacy Acquisition (LESLLA) learners in adult language programs. In response to the growth of this learner population in language classes, there has been increased interest in the professionalization of the field of adult education specific to work with LESLLA learners. As researcher and practitioner awareness and understanding of the LESLLA context continues to expand, necessary and qualitative transformations of second language (L2) teaching and L2 teacher education are taking place. This article provides a glimpse into a larger ethnographic case study that explores the teaching worlds of two LESLLA teachers working in community…
