The Induction Phase as a Critical Transition for Newly Qualified Teachers

2012

This chapter addresses the issue of becoming a teacher, with the induction phase as a critical transition from initial teacher education to the lifelong professional learning of teachers, and mentoring as a tool of support. It presents newly qualified teachers’ views on initial teacher education and discusses the need for fostering the connection between teacher training and the induction year. New teachers’ views on teacher induction and mentoring are based on research findings in Finland and other Nordic countries. Another important question addresses how initial teacher education can facilitate the metamorphosis of a student teacher into an autonomous teacher. The new teachers’ experienc…

A Brief History of the Peer-Group Mentoring Model in Finland: Struggling for Space in a Contested Niche

2020

The aim of this article is to introduce and reflect on the development of mentoring in Finland as implemented in the form of the Peer-Group Mentoring (PGM) model. Firstly, the main characteristics and principles of the PGM model are introduced, after which experiences from implementing the model are analysed based on a literature review. We examine the following research questions: (1) How have the mentoring practices of newly qualified teachers developed towards the PGM model within the educational ecosystem in Finland? (2) How has the PGM model found its relational space (‘ecological niche’) in this ecosystem? and (3) How has PGM been experienced by mentors and mentees in terms of profess…

Teaching networking: an interpersonal communication competence perspective

2015

Modern working life calls for competences that enable people to be creative, innovative and effective. Studies looking at contemporary enterprises and organisations such as businesses and schools have shown that many of the qualifications that graduating students would need, including informal learning (see Gielen, Hoeve & Nieuwenhuis 2003), innovativeness (e.g. Moolenaar & Sleegers 2010; Obstfeld 2005) and creativity (e.g. Burt 2004; Perry-Smith & Shalley 2003), are associated with interpersonal relationships and social networks. According to a report on the national career survey (EK 2011a), effective networking is dependent on social skills such as the ability to establish contacts in mu…

The Professional Competencies of the 21st Century Teacher

2010

According to the demands of many educational reforms, a teacher should not only be a provider of knowledge and skills, but also have a positive attitude towards innovations, feel the necessity for self education, and adopt a student centered teaching approach. Teachers are expected to develop professional skills and always try to be “an effective model of competence” (Bruner, 1976). For example, an examination of education students found that the main emphasis in their preparedness was subject area knowledge. Students did not report a focus on the personality traits. This study reports data gathered from education graduates about their perceptions of the level and extent of professional com…

Guidance on career development in vocational education in the Netherlands

2009

This paper explores which learning environments – geared towards career learning in students –contribute to the acquisition of career competencies in students attending pre-vocational, secondary and higher vocational education. The learning environment is laid out into the organization of the curriculum and career guidance. The study makes a distinction between three career competencies: career reflection, career forming and networking. Two quantitative studies (8325 students and 537 teachers in total) in pre-vocational, secondary and higher vocational education took place in order to study the relationship between aspects of the learning environment and career competencies. A case study in…

Transitions in Individual Vocational Education Pathways: Challenges and Collaborative Solutions

2012

This chapter draws upon some of the main results of two Finnish nationwide case studies on how common efforts of education providers and organizations’ personnel support VET (vocational education and training) students along their individual learning paths. The first study concerns best practices to prevent early leaving, and the second was a Finnish national pilot programme to assist uncertain students who have somewhat weak prerequisites to enter vocational education. Some excellent solutions are presented, but special challenges for the learner, organization and staff are also revealed. The solutions for excellence promote practices, strategies and structures that support students’ trans…
