Managing Persistent Hypoxemia: what is new?
2017
Mechanical ventilation is the standard life-support technique for patients with severe acute respiratory failure. However, some patients develop persistent and refractory hypoxemia because their lungs are so severely damaged that they are unable to respond to the application of high inspired oxygen concentration and high levels of positive end-expiratory pressure. In this article, we review current knowledge on managing persistent hypoxemia in patients with injured lungs.
Cholesterol as stabilizer of the oxytocin receptor
2002
AbstractThe function of the oxytocin receptor system is strongly dependent on steroids as demonstrated by several physiological studies. One key element of this dependence on steroids may be the interaction of cholesterol and the oxytocin receptor. In this study, we show that cholesterol stabilizes the solubilized human oxytocin receptor against thermal inactivation and proteolytic degradation. In the absence of additional cholesterol, the soluble receptor inactivates within minutes. Maximal stabilization of the oxytocin receptor requires a continuous supply with cholesterol from a cholesterol-rich environment. A structure–activity analysis of various cholesterol analogues and their effect …
Unusual oxygen binding behavior of a 24-meric crustacean hemocyanin.
2009
Abstract Hemocyanins from Crustacea usually are found as 1 × 6 or 2 × 6-meric assemblies. An exception is the hemocyanin isolated from thalassinidean shrimps where the main component is a 24-meric structure. Our analysis of oxygen binding data of the thalassinidean shrimp Upogebia pusilla based on a three-state MWC-model revealed that despite the 24-meric structure the functional properties can be described very well based on the hexamer as allosteric unit. In contrast to the hemocyanins from other thalassinidean shrimps the oxygen affinity of hemocyanin from U. pusilla is increased upon addition of l -lactate. A particular feature of this hemocyanin seems to be that l -lactate already enha…
Use of a three-factor interpretive optimisation strategy in the development of an isocratic chromatographic procedure for the screening of diuretics …
2000
Screening of diuretics in urine is feasible through direct injection of the samples into the chromatographic system and isocratic reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) with micellar-organic mobile phases of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and 1-propanol. The surfactant coverage of the chromatographic column makes the addition of organic competing amines less necessary than in conventional aqueous-organic RPLC to achieve well-shaped peaks. Also, the range of elution strengths of micellar mobile phases required to elute mixtures of hydrophobic and hydrophilic diuretics is smaller. This allows the isocratic separation of the diuretics within adequate analysis times. An interpretive methodol…
A hyaluronic acid/cyclodextrin based injectable hydrogel for local doxorubicin delivery to solid tumors
2020
Localized delivery of anticancer drugs is often the most useful therapeutic approach for the treatment of solid tumors. The use of injectable polymeric systems that maximize drug concentration in the proximal area of the tumor represents an extremely advantageous therapeutic strategy. Here, the development of an injectable in situ forming hydrogel was accomplished by exploiting the azo-type Michael reaction between an amine derivative of hyaluronic and vinylsulfone functionalized -cyclodextrins complexing doxorubicin. This injectable system can be easily prepared and administered with timelines compatible with normal operating room procedures, as demonstrated by rheological tests. In vitro…
Nie ma takiej wiedzy, która jest ostateczna. Każda stanowi przedsionek prowadzący do nowych obszarów niewiedzy. "Götz i Meyer" Davida Albahariego
2018
This article’s aim is to analyze David Albahari’s Götz and Meyer as the only Serbian literary text whose main theme is the extermination of the native Jews. The recurring key-word of the analysis is the notion of void, which appears both on the plot level and a more metaphorical one that connotes a less perceptible meaning of Albahari’s prose which can be summarized as a conviction about the insufficient memory of the Holocaust in Serbia. The main aim of this paper is to demonstrate what method Albahari employs to build his story. Consequently, juxtaposing history (ostensibly objective, linked with the order of reason) with fiction proves to be here of the utmost importance. It demonstrates…
Bedrock and soil geochemistry influence the content of chemical elements in wild edible mushrooms (Morchella group) from South Italy (Sicily)
2019
Chemical elements in the samples of wild edible mushrooms of the <em>Morchella</em> group collected from different unpolluted Sicilian sites was analyzed by the ICP-MS (method) to detect the content of their minerals and determine whether soil geology and geochemistry can influence the chemical composition in fungi. Results showed that the mushroom samples mainly contained a high concentration of K and P and a wide variety of minor and trace elements (V, Mo, Pb, Ce, Cs, Zr), including heavy metals. Statistical analysis showed that the mushrooms differed in their content of minor and trace elements based on the geological/geographic site of origin. Comparison with other studies s…
Durability of a 3D woven composite assisted by finite element multi-scale modelling
2012
International audience; The textile composite studied is a 3D woven composite. A unit cell is defined by using microscopic examinations of the microstructure. A multiscale approach assisted by the finite element method is performed in order to estimate the effective properties of the composite and then to access to local stress field. This approach allows the determination of the kind of load to which warp yarns are subjected. Moreover, detailed analysis of damaged model using different configurations of broken yarns are treated. The evolution of the stress concentration coefficient highlight the load transfers due to consecutive yarn breaks.
A genomic reappraisal of symbiotic function in the aphid/Buchnera symbiosis: reduced transporter sets and variable membrane organisations.
2011
International audience; Buchnera aphidicola is an obligate symbiotic bacterium that sustains the physiology of aphids by complementing their exclusive phloem sap diet. In this study, we reappraised the transport function of different Buchnera strains, from the aphids Acyrthosiphon pisum, Schizaphis graminum, Baizongia pistaciae and Cinara cedri, using the re-annotation of their transmembrane proteins coupled with an exploration of their metabolic networks. Although metabolic analyses revealed high interdependencies between the host and the bacteria, we demonstrate here that transport in Buchnera is assured by low transporter diversity, when compared to free-living bacteria, being mostly bas…
Interaction of allopurinol with phenprocoumon in man.
1977
Conditions in two patients on long-term phenprocoumon (Marcumar®) treatment are reported who had signs of phenprocoumon overdosage when given simultaneously allopurinol. The determination of phenprocoumon plasma concentrations in one patient showed that phenprocoumon accumulates for several weeks during treatment with allopurinol. Signs of phenprocoumon overdosage thus can appear long time after starting allopurinol treatment.
