Modal Analysis of a Reinforced Concrete Frame in Various States of Damage

The purpose of this paper is to report selected results of an experiment in which two, natural size r/c frames were put on shaking table and subjected to a sequence of seismic excitations with increasing intensity interlaced with low level, diagnostic tests. The shaking table experiment aimed at working out new methodology for monitoring vibrations of r/c structures to assess their state. Characteristic decrease of natural frequencies and increase of structural damping was observed and analyzed in detail. It was interesting to note 20 per cent drop in natural frequencies prior to visual detection of any cracks.

Monitoring road pavement performance through a novel data processing approach, accelerated pavement test results

This research presents a novel performance-based interpretation method for continuous monitoring of pavement condition through the use of piezoelectric sensors. The objective of this study is to validate the compressed cumulative loading event approach, implemented in a previously developed piezoelectric sensor, for detecting subsurface fatigue cracking through full-scale accelerated pavement testing. A piezo-electric film of polyvinylidene fluoride is used to harvest the microstrain energy induced by the traffic loading at the surface. The use of the Fabric Reinforced Cementitious Mortars (FRCMs) is nowadays a promising solution for the strengthening of both reinforced concrete and masonry structural elements. The application consists of a bond-dependent face-to-face plastering of an open grid or mesh by means of an inorganic-based matrix, i.e. a cement-based mortar. This study investigates the mechanical behavior of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) beams internally reinforced with steel bars and externally bonded with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets fixed by adhesive and hybrid jointing techniques. In particular, attention is paid to the load resistance and failure modes of composite beams. The steel fibers were used to avoiding the rip-off failure of the concrete cover. The famous Sierpinski-Erdos Duality Theorem [Sie34b, Erd43] states, informally, that any theorem about effective measure 0 and/or first category sets is also true when all occurrences of "effective measure 0" are replaced by "first category" and vice versa. This powerful and nice result shows that "measure" and "category" are equally useful notions neither of which can be preferred to the other one when making formal the intuitive notion "almost all sets." The reduction of pore water pressures is one of the most effective measures that can be taken to stabilise landslides or to improve the stability conditions of marginally stable water-bearing slopes. To this end, draining trenches have been used long since. When deep trenches are needed, the usual conventional construction techniques fail and recourse must be made to secant piles or to adjacent vertical panels built by means of the methods well established for diaphragm walls. However, unbonded materials cannot be used, since the excavation of a panel adjacent to previously built ones will instabilise these latter.
