The synthesis and condensation of oligo(phenylenevinylene)s with alkoxysilyl end groups

Monodisperse alkoxylated oligo(phenylenevinylene)s with 3, 4, or 5 benzene rings were connected to reactive di- and triethoxysilanes, either directly or via flexible spacers. Aminopropylsilanes were condensed with stilbenoid aldehydes and subsequently reduced to amines, for the direct, rigid connection, the Heck reaction and also cross-metathesis with vinyl silanes proved to be successful routes. Hydrolysis of the ethoxysilanes leads to polymerisable cyclosiloxanes or curable three-dimensional networks with pendent chromophores.

Formation of silicones mediated by the sponge enzyme silicatein-α

The sponge-restricted enzyme silicatein-α catalyzes in vivo silica formation from monomeric silicon compounds from sea water (i.e. silicic acid) and plays the pivotal role during synthesis of the siliceous sponge spicules. Recombinant silicatein-α, which was cloned from the demosponge Suberites domuncula (phylum Porifera), is shown to catalyze in vitro condensation of alkoxy silanes during a phase transfer reaction at neutral pH and ambient temperature to yield silicones like the straight-chained polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The reported condensation reaction is considered to be the first description of an enzymatically enhanced organometallic condensation reaction.

The siliceous sponges, the demosponges and hexactinellid glass sponges, are unique in their ability to form biosilica structures with complex architectures through an enzyme-catalyzed mechanism. The biosilica skeleton of these sponges with its hierarchically structure and exceptional opto-mechanical properties has turned out to be an excellent model for the design of biomimetic nanomaterials with novel property combinations. Control of the pore wall thickness and thermal stability in low-cost bimodal porous silicas

Abstract A new hierarchical bimodal mesoporous silica, labelled as UVM-12 (acronym of University of Valencia Materials), has been prepared by using a solution of sodium silicate as low-cost silicon source. The final self-assembling between cationic micelles of CTAB and anionic inorganic Si-based oligomers occurs in a homogeneous aqueous medium. The reaction is carried out from low-sized building blocks through a bottom-up approach. Caves formed by rising sulfuric waters have been described from all over the world in a wide variety of climate settings, from arid regions to mid-latitude and alpine areas. H2S is generally formed at depth by reduction of sulfates in the presence of hydrocarbons and is transported in solution through the deep aquifers. In tectonically disturbed areas major fractures eventually allow these H2S-bearing fluids to rise to the surface where oxidation processes can become active producing sulfuric acid. Integral relations, a simplified method to find interfacial resistivities for heat and mass transfer.

International audience; Integral relations were used to predict interface film transfer coefficients for evaporation and condensation. According to these, all coefficients can be calculated for one-component systems, using the thermal resistivity and the enthalpy profile through the interface. The expressions were verified in earlier work using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations for argon-like particles, which interacted with a short-range Lennard-Jones (LJ) spline potential, which becomes zero at about 1.7 times the LJ-diameter. Complexes Me2SnCl(SPy) and Me2SnCl(SPym) (HSPy = 2-mercaptopyridine; HSPym = 2-mercaptopyrimidine), from ethanol solutions, interact with aqueous calf-thymus DNA yielding condensed phases with probable Me2Sn(SPy,SPym) (DNA monomer) stoichiometries of 1:1; the condensation of DNA is inferred originated from electrostatic bonding between complex cations Me2Sn(SPy,SPym)+ and the phosphate oxygen of the phosphodiester groups. A sterically encumbered [N(2)S(6)] macropentacycle (5) related to diazamacrobicycles and cryptands has been synthesized in 53% yield by the [1+1] condensation reaction between functionalized macrocyclic and macrotricyclic precursors. A macrononacycle (18) resulting from the corresponding [2+2] condensation was isolated in 7% yield from the reaction mixture. Both compounds showed broad features in their room-temperature (1)H NMR spectra, but their maximal average symmetry (D(3h) and D(2h), respectively) was achieved at high temperature (380 K). Thiophene based imino-pyridyl palladium(II) complexes : Synthesis, molecular structures and Heck coupling reactions

Abstract The new compounds (5-methyl-2-thiophene-2-pyridyl(R))imine [R = methyl (L1); R = ethyl (L2)] and (5-bromo-2-thiophene-2-pyridyl(R)imine [R = methyl (L3); R = ethyl (L4)] were successfully synthesized via Schiff base condensation reaction and obtained in good yields. These potential ligands were reacted with [PdCl2(COD)] and [PdClMe(COD)] to give the corresponding complexes [PdCl2(L)] (L = L1-L4; 1–4) and [PdClMe(L)] (L = L1-L4; 5–8).
