Persistent Currents in Small, Imperfect Hubbard Rings
2003
We have done a study with small, imperfect Hubbard rings with exact diagonalization. The results for few-electron rings show, that the imperfection, whether localized or not, nearly always decrease, but can also \emph{increase} the persistent current, depending on the character of the imperfection and the on-site interaction. The calculations are generally in agreement with more specialized studies. In most cases the electron spin plays an important role.
Vortex localization in rotating clouds of bosons and fermions
2006
Finite quantal systems at high angular momenta may exhibit vortex formation and localization. These phenomena occur independent of the statistics of the repulsively interacting particles, which may be of bosonic or fermionic nature. We analyze the relation between vortex localization and formation of stable Wigner molecules at high angular momenta in the view of particle-hole duality.Trial wave functions for the vortex states and the corresponding fermion-boson relations are discussed.
Fingerprints of spin-orbital polarons and of their disorder in the photoemission spectra of doped Mott insulators with orbital degeneracy
2017
We explore the effects of disordered charged defects on the electronic excitations observed in the photoemission spectra of doped transition metal oxides in the Mott insulating regime by the example of the $R_{1-x}$Ca$_x$VO$_3$ perovskites, where $R=$La,$\dots$,Lu. A fundamental characteristic of these vanadium $d^2$ compounds with partly filled $t_{2g}$ valence orbitals is the persistence of spin and orbital order up to high doping, in contrast to the loss of magnetic order in high-$T_c$ cuprates at low defect concentration. We demonstrate that the disordered electronic structure of doped Mott-Hubbard insulators can be obtained with high precision within the unrestricted Hartree-Fock appro…
Signatures of superfluidity for Feshbach-resonant Fermi gases
2004
We consider atomic Fermi gases where Feshbach resonances can be used to continuously tune the system from weak to strong interaction regime, allowing to scan the whole BCS-BEC crossover. We show how a probing field transferring atoms out of the superfluid can be used to detect the onset of the superfluid transition in the high-$T_c$ and BCS regimes. The number of transferred atoms, as a function of the energy given by the probing field, peaks at the gap energy. The shape of the peak is asymmetric due to the single particle excitation gap. Since the excitation gap includes also a pseudogap contribution, the asymmetry alone is not a signature of superfluidity. Incoherent nature of the non-con…
Ground state of the frustrated Hubbard model within DMFT: energetics of Mott insulator and metal from ePT and QMC
2004
We present a new method, ePT, for extrapolating few known coefficients of a perturbative expansion. Controlled by comparisons with numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) results, 10th order strong-coupling perturbation theory (PT) for the Hubbard model on the Bethe lattice is reliably extrapolated to infinite order. Within dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), we obtain continuous estimates of energy E and double occupancy D with unprecedented precision O(10^{-5}) for the Mott insulator above its stability edge U_{c1}=4.78 as well as critical exponents. In addition, we derive corresponding precise estimates for E and D in the metallic ground state from extensive low-temperature QMC simul…
Fate of the false Mott-Hubbard transition in two dimensions
2014
We have studied the impact of non-local electronic correlations at all length scales on the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition in the unfrustrated two-dimensional Hubbard model. Combining dynamical vertex approximation, lattice quantum Monte-Carlo and variational cluster approximation, we demonstrate that scattering at long-range fluctuations, i.e., Slater-like paramagnons, opens a spectral gap at weak-to-intermediate coupling -- irrespectively of the preformation of localized or short-ranged magnetic moments. This is the reason, why the two-dimensional Hubbard model is insulating at low enough temperatures for any (finite) interaction and no Mott-Hubbard transition is observed.
Metallic and Insulating Phases of Repulsively Interacting Fermions in a 3D Optical Lattice
2008
The fermionic Hubbard model plays a fundamental role in the description of strongly correlated materials. Here we report on the realization of this Hamiltonian using a repulsively interacting spin mixture of ultracold $^{40}$K atoms in a 3D optical lattice. We have implemented a new method to directly measure the compressibility of the quantum gas in the trap using in-situ imaging and independent control of external confinement and lattice depth. Together with a comparison to ab-initio Dynamical Mean Field Theory calculations, we show how the system evolves for increasing confinement from a compressible dilute metal over a strongly-interacting Fermi liquid into a band insulating state. For …
State preparation and dynamics of ultracold atoms in higher lattice orbitals
2007
We report on the realization of a multi-orbital system with ultracold atoms in the excited bands of a 3D optical lattice by selectively controlling the band population along a given lattice direction. The lifetime of the atoms in the excited band is found to be considerably longer (10-100 times) than the characteristic time scale for inter-site tunneling, thus opening the path for orbital selective many-body physics with ultracold atoms. Upon exciting the atoms from an initial lowest band Mott insulating state to higher lying bands, we observe the dynamical emergence of coherence in 1D (and 2D), compatible with Bose-Einstein condensation to a non-zero momentum state.
BCS-BEC Crossover in Atomic Fermi Gases with a Narrow Resonance
2006
We determine the effects on the BCS-BEC crossover of the energy dependence of the effective two-body interaction, which at low energies is determined by the effective range. To describe interactions with an effective range of either sign, we consider a single-channel model with a two-body interaction having an attractive square well and a repulsive square barrier. We investigate the two-body scattering properties of the model, and then solve the Eagles-Leggett equations for the zero temperature crossover, determining the momentum dependent gap and the chemical potential self-consistently. From this we investigate the dependence of the crossover on the effective range of the interaction.
Mott transitions in the half-filled SU(2M) symmetric Hubbard model
2012
The Hubbard model with large orbital degeneracy has recently gained relevance in the context of ultracold earth alkali like atoms. We compute its static properties in the SU(2M) symmetric limit for up to M=8 bands at half filling within dynamical mean-field theory, using the numerically exact multigrid Hirsch-Fye quantum Monte Carlo approach. Based on this unbiased data, we establish scaling laws which predict the phase boundaries of the paramagnetic Mott metal-insulator transition at arbitrary orbital degeneracy M with high accuracy.
