Hydrodynamical aspects of the floating zone silicon crystal growth process

2014

Abstract 3D numerical modeling of dopant transport in the melt is carried out for the 100 mm floating zone silicon single crystal growth process. The axis-symmetric shape of the molten zone is calculated with the program FZone considering the coil and the high frequency (HF) electromagnetic (EM) field in 3D. Time dependent melt flow, temperature and dopant concentration fields are modeled using a specialized solver based on the open source code library OpenFOAM ® . The influence of the Marangoni coefficient in the boundary conditions on the melt velocity field is analyzed. The obtained shapes of the crystallization interface and resistivity profiles in the grown crystal are compared with ex…

Non-equilibrium melting of colloidal crystals in confinement

2009

International audience; We report on a novel and flexible experiment to investigate the non-equilibrium melting behaviour of model crystals made from charged colloidal spheres. In a slit geometry polycrystalline material formed in a low salt region is driven by hydrostatic pressure up an evolving gradient in salt concentration and melts at large salt concentration. Depending on particle and initial salt concentration, driving velocity and the local salt concentration complex morphologic evolution is observed. Crystal-melt interface positions and the melting velocity are obtained quantitatively from time resolved Bragg- and polarization microscopic measurements. A simple theoretical model pr…

Infrared pulsed laser deposition of niobium nitride thin films

2011

We have successfully fabricated superconducting niobium nitride thin films on single crystals of magnesium oxide using a pulsed laser deposition technique where 1064 nm (photon energy ~1.16 eV) laser pulses from an Nd:YAG laser were used for ablation. A correlation between the superconducting transition temperature, the nitrogen base pressure during deposition and the lattice parameter of the produced NbN films was observed. Superconductor-insulator-normal metal junctions fabricated using these NbN films as the superconductor revealed nonlinear electrical characteristics at 4.2 K associated with quasiparticle tunneling.

Crystallization kinetics of colloidal binary mixtures with depletion attraction.

2014

In this work the crystallization kinetics of colloidal binary mixtures with attractive interaction potential (Asakura–Oosawa) has been addressed. Parameters such as fraction of crystals, linear crystal dimension and crystal packing have been quantified in order to understand how the crystal formation is driven in terms of the depth of the attractive potential and the composition of the binary mixture (described by the number ratio). It was found that inside the eutectic triangle, crystallization is mainly governed by nucleation and the crystal packing is close to the close-packing of hard spheres. Moving out from the eutectic triangle towards small component results in the crystallization o…

Influence of Phonon dimensionality on Electron Energy Relaxation

2007

We studied experimentally the role of phonon dimensionality on electron-phonon (e-p) interaction in thin copper wires evaporated either on suspended silicon nitride membranes or on bulk substrates, at sub-Kelvin temperatures. The power emitted from electrons to phonons was measured using sensitive normal metal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) tunnel junction thermometers. Membrane thicknesses ranging from 30 nm to 750 nm were used to clearly see the onset of the effects of two-dimensional (2D) phonon system. We observed for the first time that a 2D phonon spectrum clearly changes the temperature dependence and strength of the e-p scattering rate, with the interaction becoming stronger at the …

A Controllable and Highly Propagative Hybrid Surface Plasmon-Phonon Polariton in a CdZnO-based Two-Interface System

2019

The development of new nanophotonic devices requires the understanding and modulation of the propagating surface plasmon and phonon modes arising in plasmonic and polar dielectric materials, respectively. Here we explore the CdZnO alloy as a plasmonic material, with a tunable plasma frequency and reduced losses compared to pure CdO. By means of attenuated total reflectance, we experimentally observe the hybridization of the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) with the surface phonon polariton (SPhP) in the air-CdZnO-sapphire three-layer system. We show how through the precise control of the CdZnO thickness, the resonance frequencies of the hybrid surface plasmon-phonon polariton (SPPP) are tune…

Optical properties of lithium gallium oxide

2017

Abstract The optical dielectric function tensor of orthorhombic single-crystal LiGaO 2 was determined for polarizations along a , b , and c crystal-axis in the photon energy range from 0.04 eV to 6.5 eV by the generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry. In the far-infrared spectral range from 12.4 meV to 40 meV, the dielectric function was determined from conventional polarized transmittance and polarized reflectance measurements. Lineshape analysis of the dielectric function tensor major components allowed for a determination of the long-wavelength optical phonon characteristics, refractive indices dispersion, and parameters of interband and excitonic optical transitions.

High-Pressure Softening of the Out-of-Plane A2u(Transverse-Optic) Mode of Hexagonal Boron Nitride Induced by Dynamical Buckling

2019

We investigate the highly anisotropic behavior of the in-plane and out-of-plane infrared-active phonons of hexagonal boron nitride by means of infrared reflectivity and absorption measurements under high pressure. Infrared reflectivity spectra at normal incidence on high-quality single crystals show strict fulfillment of selection rules and an unusually long E1u[transverse-optic (TO)] phonon lifetime. Accurate values of the dielectric constants at ambient pressure ϵ0= 6.96, ϵ∞= 4.95, ϵ 0= 3.37, and ϵ∞ = 2.84 have been determined from fits to the reflectivity spectra. The out-of-plane A2u phonon reflectivity band is revealed in measurements on an inclined facet, and absorption measurements a…

A Composite Phononic Crystal Design for Quasiparticle Lifetime Enhancement in Kinetic Inductance Detectors

2019

A nanoscale phononic crystal filter (reflector) is designed for a kinetic inductance detector where the reflection band is matched to the quasiparticle recombination phonons with the aim to increase quasiparticle lifetime in the superconducting resonator. The inductor is enclosed by a 1 um wide phononic crystal membrane section with two simple hole patterns that each contain a partial spectral gap for various high frequency phonon modes. The phononic crystal is narrow enough for low frequency thermal phonons to propagate unimpeded. With 3D phonon scattering simulations over a 40 dB attenuation in transmitted power is found for the crystal, which was previously estimated to give a lifetime e…

Superconductor-ferromagnet tunnel junction thermoelectric bolometer and calorimeter with a SQUID readout

2020

Superconductor-ferromagnet thermoelectric detector (SFTED) is a novel ultrasensitive radiation detector based on the giant thermoelectric effect in superconductor-ferromagnet tunnel junctions. This type of detector can be operated without the need of additional bias lines, and is predicted to provide a performance rivaling transition-edge sensors and kinetic inductance detectors. Here we report our numerical studies on the SFTED noise equivalent power, energy resolution and time constant, and the feasibility of a SQUID readout in both bolometric and calorimetric regimes, with the goal to provide practical design parameters for the detector fabrication and the readout circuitry implementatio…
