In opposition to a logic based on self-interest or a sense of duty, a "logic of gift" has been proposed as a way to understand the phenomenon of free, unconditional giving. The discovery of single nucleotide variants (SNVs) from next-generation sequencing (NGS) data typically works by aligning reads to a given genome and then creating an alignment map to interpret the presence of SNVs. Various approaches have been developed to call whether germline SNVs (or SNPs) in normal cells or somatic SNVs in cancer/tumor cells. Nonetheless, efficient callers for both germline and somatic SNVs have not yet been extensively investigated. Insect resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis insecticidal crystal proteins

Several insect species have developed resistance to insecticidal crystal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis, either through laboratory selection, or under field conditions. In this chapter we review the current knowledge on the biochemical and genetic mechanisms of resistance to B. thuringiensis. This knowledge will be important in the design of appropriate tactics to manage the development of resistance in insect populations.

In Mediterranean cooking, oregano is an aromatic herb which is mostly known for its pleasant, characteristic aroma. Although it grows wild throughout the Island of Sicily, it is cultivated in order to satisfy the growing demand for this herb for seasoning. In order to ensure success, specially selected plant material (superior qualities and good productive performance) is necessary for specialised cultivation. This paper contains the productive results (2000-2005) of several oregano accessions, previously characterized in terms of morphology and quality in a field collection catalogue. This research aimed to study the effect of leisure activities in the psychological well-being, attitude for leisure and distress of seniors. The sample consisted of 403 participants (male -- 150; female -- 253), with a range age between 53--93 years. Regarding the perception of health condition, 333 subjects were considered independent (81.4%) while 70 participants were considered dependent (17.1%). Research is quantitative, with a design-cross. The instruments used were the MHI and the LAS. Biological age, health, and health-risk indicators among 25-57-year-old men in two parts of Finland.

Biological age, health and health-risk indicators were examined among 460 systematically chosen men, aged 25–57 years, in two parts of Finland. Morbidity rates and the prevalence of some health-risk indicators were higher and the standard of living lower in North Karelia than in South-West Finland. The index of biological age (IBA) did not show significant differences between the districts and did not correlate with health-risk indicators. People working in physically hard occupations (industrial and mining workers) were found to have more diseases and had higher IBA values than had workers in lighter occupations. To promote elderly people’s behavioral compliance toward influenza prevention, the aim of the current project is to develop, implement, and evaluate a theory-based low-administration-cost intervention building on a leading psychological theory, the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA).
