Molecule Isomerism Modulates the Diradical Properties of Stable Singlet Diradicaloids

Inclusion of quinoidal cores in conjugated hydrocarbons is a common strategy to modulate the properties of diradicaloids formed by aromaticity recovery within the quinoidal unit. Here we describe an alternative approach of tuning of diradical properties in indenoindenodibenzothiophenes upon anti → syn isomerism of the benzothiophene motif. This alters the relationship of the S atom with the radical center from linear to cross conjugation yet retains the same 2,6-naphtho conjugation pattern of the rearomatized core. Comparison of Alkoxy-substituted 4,4´-Distyrylbiphenyls and the Corresponding 4,4´-Distyrylbenzenes

Abstract Configurationally highly pure (E,E)-4,4´-bis(styryl)biphenyls 2a - e were obtained by Siegrist reactions of 4,4´-dimethylbiphenyl 3 and alkoxy-substituted benzaldimines (4a - e). DSC measurements have indicated different crystalline modifications of these conjugated compounds. The stilbenoid chromophores of 2a - e are compared to the stilbenoid chromophores in the OPV series, which have a similar length of conjugation. The intense fluorescence and the high transparency in the visible region are promising properties for an application of the donor-substituted compounds 2a - e in twophoton absorption (TPA) techniques.
Photophysical Properties of Oligo(phenylene ethynylene) Iridium(III) Complexes Functionalized with Metal-Anchoring Groups

[EN] The electrochemical and photophysical properties of a family of conjugated ligands and their iridium(III) cyclometallated complexes are described. They consist of a series of monocationic Ir-III bis-2-phenylpyridine complexes with p-phenylethynyl-1,10-phenanthroline ligands of different length. The structure of these ligands includes terminal acetylthiol or pyridine groups, which can provide good electrical contacts between metal electrodes. Cyclic voltammetry, absorption and emission spectroscopy, laser flash photolysis and density functional theory calculations reveal that the high conjugation of the diimine ligand affords small energy gaps between the frontier orbitals. Arylethynyl-Substituted Tristriazolotriazines: Synthesis, Optical Properties, and Thermotropic Behavior

The synthesis of C3-symmetrical tristriazolotriazines with conjugated arms and lateral alkoxy side chains was performed by a threefold condensation of cyanuric chloride with tetrazoles. Conjugated π segments include phenyl, tolane, and its phenylethynyl-elongated homologue. Disclike and a dendritic molecule have been obtained, and two compounds with a 3,4,5-tris(octyloxy) substitution form broad thermotropic mesophases. The linear optical properties, solvatochromism of the fluorescence, acidochromism, and the two-photon absorption efficiency of selected compounds are reported.
Rhodanine-based dyes absorbing in the entire visible spectrum

A series of new broad-absorbing dyes based on rhodanine derivatives conjugated with triarylamines using Q5 a fluorene backbone was synthesized. Spectroscopic and electrochemical characterizations, along with theoretical calculations at the B3LYP/cc-pVDZ level, revealed interesting properties of the dyes, which make the dyes efficiently absorb in the entire visible spectrum.

The linear and non-linear optical properties of a family of dumbbell-shaped dinuclear complexes, in which an oligothiophene chain with various numbers of rings (1, 3, and 6) acts as a bridge between two homoleptic tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) complexes, have been fully investigated by using a range of spectroscopic techniques (absorption and luminescence, transient absorption, Raman, and non-linear absorption), together with density functional theory calculations. Large molecules containing different chemical units whose interactions within the molecule result in new macroscopically observable effects, have become increasingly important.The organization of molecules of this type in ordered structures leads to functional molecular materials.Their use in molecular electronics requires that the units exhibit specific electronic properties. Recently, we reported on the intramolecular energy transfer through terminally substituted conjugated polyenes. An intramolecular electron transfer within donor-acceptor substituted polyenes can be achieved by introducing suitable terminal groups.

The photoinduced charge-transfer properties of a series of polyalkylthiophene copolymers, carrying anthraquinone substituents covalently linked to the conjugated backbone, have been studied in the solid state by photoinduced absorption (PA) and light-induced electron spin resonance (LESR) spectroscopy. The measurements indicate the formation of metastable charges arising from the photoinduced electron transfer from the polythiophene backbone to the anthraquinone moieties. Trans-Cinnamaldehydes (CAs) or o-, m- and p-X-(E)-3-phenylpropenals; (X = Cl or Br) were synthesized and their 1H, 13C and 17O NMR spectra were measured, assigned and analysed. The long-range benzylic couplings are discussed in terms of the conformational characteristics of the related styrene systems. The 1H, 13C and 17O NMR substituent chemical shifts of the CA derivatives were compared with those of styrene and explained by the π-electron delocalization in the conjugated CCCO bond system of CA.

[EN] A diversity-oriented approach to enantiomerically pure densely substituted pyrazoles, ¿-aryl-¿-pyrazolylatrolactic acid and ¿-aryl-¿-pyrazolylacetophenones has been developed. The approach utilises the conjugated addition of the lithium enolate of the (2S,5S)-cis-1,3-dioxolan-4-one derived from optically active (S)-mandelic acid and pivalaldehyde to several 2-arylidene-1,3-diketones, which proceeds readily to give the corresponding Michael adducts in good yields and diastereoselectivities.
