Theoretical spectroscopy of organic systems

1999

Abstract The complete active space (CAS) SCF method in conjunction with the multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2) has been applied to study the electronically excited states of basic organic compounds. As shown in the lecture with a number of examples, the CASPT2 method is capable of yielding accurate results for relative energies and other properties of excited states, provided that flexible one-electron basis sets are employed. The applications comprise an ample range of systems and problems, including polyenes, conjugated and unconjugated dienes, alternant and nonalternant hydrocarbons, polyenals, etc. As a whole these studies enable both qualitative and quantita…

Upregulation of liver VLDL receptor and FAT/CD36 expressions in LDLR-/- apoB100/100 mice fed trans-10,cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid

2006

International audience; This study explores the mechanisms responsible for the fatty liver setup in mice fed trans-10,cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (t10c12 CLA), hypothesizing that an induction of low density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) expression is associated with lipid accumulation. To this end, the effects of t10c12 CLA treatment on lipid parameters, serum lipoproteins, and expression of liver lipid receptors were measured in LDLR(-/-) apoB(100/100) mice as a model of human familial hypercholesterolemia itself depleted of LDLR. Mice were fed t10c12 CLA over 2 or 4 weeks. We first observed that the treatment induced liver steatosis, even in the absence of LDLR. Mice treated for 2 weeks…

DFT calculation of structures and NMR chemical shifts of simple models of small diameter zigzag single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)

2011

Linearly conjugated benzene rings (acenes), belt-shape molecules (cyclic acenes) and model single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were fully optimized at the unrestricted level of density functional theory (UB3LYP/6-31G*). The models of SWCNTs were selected to get some insight into the potential changes of NMR chemical shift upon systematic increase of the molecular size. The theoretical NMR chemical shifts were calculated at the B3LYP/pcS-2 level of theory using benzene as reference. In addition, the change of radial breathing mode (RBM), empirically correlated with SWCNT diameter, was directly related with the radius of cyclic acenes. Both geometrical and NMR parameters were extrapolated t…

Nanogel-antimiR-31 conjugates affect colon cancer cells behaviour

2017

Soft and flexible nanogels, produced by electron beam (e-beam) irradiation of poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) and acrylic acid, were evaluated as delivery devices of the inhibitor of miR-31, a small RNA molecule with an important role in colorectal cancer (CRC) progression. The nanogel carriers developed possess both carboxyl and primary amino groups; the former were activated to react with the primary amino group present in the purposely-functionalised AntimiR-31. Very high conjugation reaction yields were attained, as well as a remarkable colloidal and storage stability of the conjugates. The ability of these nanoconstructs to be internalized by cells and the specific interaction of conjugated …

Molecule Isomerism Modulates the Diradical Properties of Stable Singlet Diradicaloids

2019

Inclusion of quinoidal cores in conjugated hydrocarbons is a common strategy to modulate the properties of diradicaloids formed by aromaticity recovery within the quinoidal unit. Here we describe an alternative approach of tuning of diradical properties in indenoindenodibenzothiophenes upon anti → syn isomerism of the benzothiophene motif. This alters the relationship of the S atom with the radical center from linear to cross conjugation yet retains the same 2,6-naphtho conjugation pattern of the rearomatized core. We conduct a full comparison between the anti and syn derivatives based on structural, spectroscopic, theoretical, and magnetic measurements, showing that these systems are stabl…

Operational Mechanism of Conjugated Polyelectrolytes

2014

Conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) are versatile materials used in a range of organic optoelectronic applications. Because of their ionic/electronic nature, characterizing these materials is nontrivial, and their operational mechanism is not fully understood. In this work we use a methodology that combines constant-voltage-driven current-density transient measurements with fast current vs voltage scans to allow decoupling of ionic and electronic phenomena. This technique is applied to diodes prepared with cationic CPEs having different charge-compensating anions. Our results indicate that the operational mechanism of these devices is governed by electrochemical doping of the CPE. On the bas…

Comparison of Alkoxy-substituted 4,4´-Distyrylbiphenyls and the Corresponding 4,4´-Distyrylbenzenes

2008

Abstract Configurationally highly pure (E,E)-4,4´-bis(styryl)biphenyls 2a - e were obtained by Siegrist reactions of 4,4´-dimethylbiphenyl 3 and alkoxy-substituted benzaldimines (4a - e). DSC measurements have indicated different crystalline modifications of these conjugated compounds. The stilbenoid chromophores of 2a - e are compared to the stilbenoid chromophores in the OPV series, which have a similar length of conjugation. The intense fluorescence and the high transparency in the visible region are promising properties for an application of the donor-substituted compounds 2a - e in twophoton absorption (TPA) techniques.

Photophysical Properties of Oligo(phenylene ethynylene) Iridium(III) Complexes Functionalized with Metal-Anchoring Groups

2016

[EN] The electrochemical and photophysical properties of a family of conjugated ligands and their iridium(III) cyclometallated complexes are described. They consist of a series of monocationic Ir-III bis-2-phenylpyridine complexes with p-phenylethynyl-1,10-phenanthroline ligands of different length. The structure of these ligands includes terminal acetylthiol or pyridine groups, which can provide good electrical contacts between metal electrodes. Cyclic voltammetry, absorption and emission spectroscopy, laser flash photolysis and density functional theory calculations reveal that the high conjugation of the diimine ligand affords small energy gaps between the frontier orbitals. Nevertheless…

Arylethynyl-Substituted Tristriazolotriazines: Synthesis, Optical Properties, and Thermotropic Behavior

2014

The synthesis of C3-symmetrical tristriazolotriazines with conjugated arms and lateral alkoxy side chains was performed by a threefold condensation of cyanuric chloride with tetrazoles. Conjugated π segments include phenyl, tolane, and its phenylethynyl-elongated homologue. Disclike and a dendritic molecule have been obtained, and two compounds with a 3,4,5-tris(octyloxy) substitution form broad thermotropic mesophases. The linear optical properties, solvatochromism of the fluorescence, acidochromism, and the two-photon absorption efficiency of selected compounds are reported.

Rhodanine-based dyes absorbing in the entire visible spectrum

2017

A series of new broad-absorbing dyes based on rhodanine derivatives conjugated with triarylamines using Q5 a fluorene backbone was synthesized. Spectroscopic and electrochemical characterizations, along with theoretical calculations at the B3LYP/cc-pVDZ level, revealed interesting properties of the dyes, which make the dyes efficiently absorb in the entire visible spectrum.
