Supplementary optical phase transition in photorefractive coherent oscillator

2001

The semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator with two counterpropagating pump waves may exhibit two optical phase transitions: one from a disordered state of wide-angle photorefractive scattering into a high-ordered state with the immobile photorefractive grating and the other one from the state with immobile grating into the state with two moving photorefractive gratings. We show, both experimentally and from calculations, that two these phase transitions are the second-order phase transitions.

Measurement of matter-antimatter differences in beauty baryon decays

2017

Differences in the behaviour of matter and antimatter have been observed in $K$ and $B$ meson decays, but not yet in any baryon decay. Such differences are associated with the non-invariance of fundamental interactions under the combined charge-conjugation and parity transformations, known as $C\!P$ violation. Using data from the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, a search is made for $C\!P$-violating asymmetries in the decay angle distributions of $\Lambda^0_b$ baryons decaying to $p\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-$ and $p\pi^-K^+K^-$ final states. These four-body hadronic decays are a promising place to search for sources of $C\!P$ violation both within and beyond the Standard Model of particle…

Bistable phase locking of a nonlinear optical cavity via rocking: Transmuting vortices into phase patterns.

2006

We report experimental observation of the conversion of a phase-invariant nonlinear system into a phase-locked one via the mechanism of rocking [G. J. de Valcarcel and K. Staliunas, Phys. Rev. E 67, 026604 (2003)]. This conversion results in that vortices of the phase-invariant system are being replaced by phase patterns such as domain walls. The experiment is carried out on a photorefractive oscillator in two-wave mixing configuration.A model for the experimental device is given that reproduces the observed behavior.

All-optical discrete vortex switch

2011

We introduce discrete vortex solitons and vortex breathers in circular arrays of nonlinear waveguides. The simplest vortex breather in a four-waveguide coupler is a nonlinear dynamic state changing its topological charge between $+1$ and $\ensuremath{-}1$ periodically during propagation. We find the stability domain for this solution and suggest an all-optical vortex switching scheme.

Ising and Bloch walls of phase domains in two-dimensional parametric wave mixing

2004

Oscillators driven by a degenerate wave mixing process are bistable in the phase of the generated radiation. In systems with a large Fresnel number, domains of opposite phase form therefore spontaneously. A simple model predicts a real field in which phase domains are separated by Ising-type walls. In this paper we show experimentally (using complex field reconstruction from measurements) and theoretically (by an extended model) that the optical field can be real as well as complex valued and that complex field fronts are related to the front curvature.

Controlled Observation of a Nonequilibrium Ising-Bloch Transition in a Nonlinear Optical Cavity

2004

We describe the controlled observation of the nonequilibrium Ising-Bloch transition in a broad area nonlinear optical cavity, namely, a quasi-1D single longitudinal-mode photorefractive oscilator in a degenerate four-wave mixing configuration. Our experimental technique allows for the controlled injection of the domain walls. We use cavity detuning as control parameter and find that both Ising and Bloch walls can exist for the same detuning values within a certain interval of detunings, i.e., the Ising-Bloch transition is hysteretic in our case. A complex Ginzburg-Landau model is used for supporting the observations.

Slowing down of light pulses using backward-wave four-wave mixing with local response

2015

The slowing down of light pulses is achieved using backward-wave four-wave mixing in a medium with local response. A Bi12TiO20 crystal with an external dc field is used in the experiment as a proof-of-concept material. The delay and shape transformation of output pulses are studied and compared for the transmitted and phase conjugate channels. It is shown that the phase conjugate pulse achieves a longer delay under typical experimental conditions with equal intensities of the pump beams. This advantage of the phase conjugate beam is especially pronounced for short pulses with half-widths smaller than the response time of the medium. The agreement of the experimental results with numerical c…

Slow light with photorefractive four-wave mixing

2011

A slowing down of light pulses using backward-wave four-wave mixing is achieved in photorefractive crystals with different coupling strength. The delay and width of the output pulse are studied as a function of the input pulse width and pump intensity ratio for the amplified transmitted beam and for the phase-conjugated beam. The delay characteristics are compared with those of the two-beam coupling. It is demonstrated that the four-wave mixing process ensures a larger slowing down of short pulses (pulses with width shorter than the photorefractive response time) as compared to the photorefractive two-beam coupling scheme and guarantees the elimination of forerunners. The delay of long puls…
