A design for an electromagnetic filter for precision energy measurements at the tritium endpoint

2019

We present a detailed description of the electromagnetic filter for the PTOLEMY project to directly detect the Cosmic Neutrino Background (CNB). Starting with an initial estimate for the orbital magnetic moment, the higher-order drift process of E×B is configured to balance the gradient-B drift motion of the electron in such a way as to guide the trajectory into the standing voltage potential along the mid-plane of the filter. As a function of drift distance along the length of the filter, the filter zooms in with exponentially increasing precision on the transverse velocity component of the electron kinetic energy. This yields a linear dimension for the total filter length that is exceptio…

A Revised Experimental Upper Limit on the Electric Dipole Moment of the Neutron

2015

We present for the first time a detailed and comprehensive analysis of the experimental results that set the current world sensitivity limit on the magnitude of the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron. We have extended and enhanced our earlier analysis to include recent developments in the understanding of the effects of gravity in depolarizing ultracold neutrons (UCN); an improved calculation of the spectrum of the neutrons; and conservative estimates of other possible systematic errors, which are also shown to be consistent with more recent measurements undertaken with the apparatus. We obtain a net result of $d_\mathrm{n} = -0.21 \pm 1.82 \times10^{-26}$ $e$cm, which may be inter…

Euonymus latifolius (L.) Miller (Celastraceae) en Castilla-La Mancha

2005

Miguel. We found the first population of Euonymus latifolius in Castilla-La Mancha region (Spain) near the river Tajo in Cuenca province with only 32 plants, 2 of which are adults.

On the implementation of weno schemes for a class of polydisperse sedimentation models

2011

The sedimentation of a polydisperse suspension of small rigid spheres of the same density, but which belong to a finite number of species (size classes), can be described by a spatially one-dimensional system of first-order, nonlinear, strongly coupled conservation laws. The unknowns are the volume fractions (concentrations) of each species as functions of depth and time. Typical solutions, e.g. for batch settling in a column, include discontinuities (kinematic shocks) separating areas of different composition. The accurate numerical approximation of these solutions is a challenge since closed-form eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the flux Jacobian are usually not available, and the characte…

Capturing Shock Reflections: An Improved Flux Formula

1996

Godunov type schemes, based on exact or approximate solutions to the Riemann problem, have proven to be an excellent tool to compute approximate solutions to hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. However, there are many instances in which a particular scheme produces inappropriate results. In this paper we consider several situations in which Roe's scheme gives incorrect results (or blows up all together) and we propose an alternative flux formula that produces numerical approximations in which the pathological behavior is either eliminated or reduced to computationally acceptable levels.

Power ENO methods: a fifth-order accurate Weighted Power ENO method

2004

In this paper we introduce a new class of ENO reconstruction procedures, the Power ENO methods, to design high-order accurate shock capturing methods for hyperbolic conservation laws, based on an extended class of limiters, improving the behavior near discontinuities with respect to the classical ENO methods. Power ENO methods are defined as a correction of classical ENO methods [J. Comput. Phys. 71 (1987) 231], by applying the new limiters on second-order differences or higher. The new class of limiters includes as a particular case the minmod limiter and the harmonic limiter used for the design of the PHM methods [see SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 15 (1994) 892]. The main features of these new ENO…

A Flux-Split Algorithm Applied to Relativistic Flows

1998

The equations of RFD can be written as a hyperbolic system of conservation laws by choosing an appropriate vector of unknowns. We give an explicit formulation of the full spectral decomposition of the Jacobian matrices associated with the fluxes in each spatial direction, which is the essential ingredient of the techniques we propose in this paper. These techniques are based on the recently derived flux formula of Marquina, a new way to compute the numerical flux at a cell interface which leads to a conservative, upwind numerical scheme. Using the spectral decompositions in a fundamental way, we construct high order versions of the basic first-order scheme described by R. Donat and A. Marqu…

A semi-Lagrangian AMR scheme for 2D transport problems in conservation form

2013

In this paper, we construct a semi-Lagrangian (SL) Adaptive-Mesh-Refinement (AMR) solver for 1D and 2D transport problems in conservation form. First, we describe the a-la-Harten AMR framework: the adaptation process selects a hierarchical set of grids with different resolutions depending on the features of the integrand function, using as criteria the point value prediction via interpolation from coarser meshes, and the appearance of large gradients. We integrate in time by reconstructing at the feet of the characteristics through the Point-Value Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (PV-WENO) interpolator. We propose, then, an extension to the 2D setting by making the time integration dime…

Weighted ENO interpolation and applications

2004

Abstract Data-dependent interpolatory techniques such as essentially non-oscillatory (ENO) technique [J. Comput. Phys. 71 (1987) 231] have long been used as a reconstruction process in multiresolution schemes. In this work we analyze the weighted ENO (WENO) technique introduced by Liu et al. in the context of conservation laws [J. Comput. Phys. 115 (1994) 200] and improved by Jiang and Shu [J. Comput. Phys. 126 (1996) 202], and apply it to the compression of images, using multiresolution techniques.

The MAST-edge centred lumped scheme for the flow simulation in variably saturated heterogeneous porous media

2012

A novel methodology is proposed for the solution of the flow equation in a variably saturated heterogeneous porous medium. The computational domain is descretized using triangular meshes and the governing PDEs are discretized using a lumped in the edge centres numerical technique. The dependent unknown variable of the problem is the piezometric head. A fractional time step methodology is applied for the solution of the original system, solving consecutively a prediction and a correction problem. A scalar potential of the flow field exists and in the prediction step a MArching in Space and Time (MAST) formulation is applied for the sequential solution of the Ordinary Differential Equation of…
