Ethics of restoration and conservation science: the completion and reuse of the former Mother Church in Santa Margherita di Belice (Sicily) / Ética d…
2016
Non destructive investigation of historical plaster and stonework in San Giovanni dei Napoletani Church in Palermo (Italy): evaluation of the exchang…
2008
Historic plasters will be increasingly at risk, due to natural alteration as well as renovation projects when internal and external plaster is refused and refaced. To sensibly conserve as much as possible of the historic substance, the preliminary inquiry is very important to get a profound knowledge of the integrity of materials and their decay, and to decide how to restore them. The application of NDI like infrared thermography (IRT) and radar investigation can be a reasonable support to evaluate the relationship between interior and exterior plaster, the microclimatic exchange in the architecture surfaces and the related alteration of materials. In fact they’re used for the detection of …
Papers on the Conservation of Ancient Monuments and Remains. John Ruskin, Gilbert Scott e la Carta inglese della Conservazione (Londra, 1865)
2019
RESTORING, REUSING RURAL LANDSCAPES. A CASE STUDY: THE AREA OF MENFI IN SICILY
2017
The contribution focuses on the potential of the rural landscape of Sicily, to cope with the depopulation of the smaller towns, by relying on an integrated conservation, which means not only the preservation of the endogenous territorial resource values, but also the production of surplus values. The Italian countryside is scattered with unknown and derelict “minor” heritage, this substantializes the European identity, and we should take action with a view to recovery and reuse it. However, in a time that sees a renewed interest in the potential of the agrarian landscape, it is believed that the current concept of restoration, which is now extended to the cultural and environmental heritage…
Theoretical construct, method and working tool of the “Preventive Restoration”
2014
A restoration may constitute a positive moment to guarantee the conservation, transmission and a compatible use of an historical architecture, but it is often the result of a long and guilty omission of care, attesting a lack of interest in the architectural heritage we are late forced to heal with extensive and inva-sive interventions that, in most cases, could be prevented. Clear maintenance programs and a correct and well-planned preventive action could be sufficient to avoid unexpected interventions when it is too late; such simple concepts - apparently shared by everyone - however, remain rele-gated to a level of brainy attitudes or protocols that do not produce any ad-vantage in terms…
(Di)segni contemporanei
2018
The contribution intends to critically present some restoration interventions aligned with the most modern and evolved culture of conservation. The two interventions are carried out in Sicily on th…
DIAGNOSIS FOR ARCHITECTURAL CONSERVATION. A synthetic report of a campaign of non-destructive and minimally invasive diagnostic tests performed in th…
2014
The paper presents the results of a campaign of non-destructive and minimally invasive tests that were conducted in the church of Santa Maria delle Stelle in Comiso (Ragusa, Sicily), which is the larger church in the Diocese of Ragusa. It includes a summary of the reflections that arose during the preliminary surveys and instrumental tests, and reasons that supported the choice of investigations to be performed and methods to be specifically applied for the consolidation of the architectural structures and plaster layers.
THE ROLE OF THERMOGRAPHY IN THE NON-DESTRUCTIVE EVALUATION OF HISTORICAL ARCHITECTURAL SURFACES. Some observation about the method and its purpose
2014
Infrared-Thermography (IRT) has become a supporting tool for the investigation of historical structures and facades. Using the non-destructive testing method for the detection can give a profound knowledge about the current status of the object and the state of decay, about different kinds of discontinuities at historical facades, of construction details and of thermal bridges in the facades. Different case studies of thermographic surveys on some Sicilian monuments are presented and discussed to illustrate how the method can offer applicable information about the investigated objects and demonstrate its reasonable integration into conservation projects.
Termographic survey and architectural envelopes: infrared tecnology to conserve the skin of monuments. Experimental application in Sicily (2002-2009)
2010
The paper treats the elaboration system to obtain a thermogrammetry. The experimental method is useful to get a metric thermal image to be edited with the photogrammetric image of the architectural surfaces simultaneously. This way, the gotten graph can be imported in c.a.d. software as raster image and becomes the base to improve the design of the thematic maps that constitute the restoration project. The essay shows the editing practice to be developed in order to get the diagnosis supported by thermography on the architectural surfaces. Some application examples of the diagnostic methodology are introduced and critically commented to understand all the potentialities of the investigation…
Using plot soil loss distribution for soil conservation design
2011
Abstract Soil conservation design is generally based on the estimation of average annual soil loss but it should be developed taking into account storms of a given return period. However, use of frequency analysis in soil erosion studies is relatively limited. In this paper, an investigation on statistical distribution of soil loss measurements was firstly carried out using a relatively high number of simultaneously operating plots of different lengths, λ (11, 22, 33 and 44 m) at the experimental station of Sparacia (southern Italy). Using a simple normalization technique, the analysis showed that the probability distribution of the normalized soil loss is independent of both the scale leng…
