In this prospective study, we tested the hypothesis that a training exercise program reduces th…
Sex-dependent changes in the pulmonary vasoconstriction potential of newborn rats following short-term oxygen exposure
2012
Chronic exposure to supplemental oxygen (O(2)) induces lung damage and mortality in a sex-dependent manner. The effect of short-term hyperoxia on the newborn pulmonary vasculature is unknown but is, however, of clinical significance in the neonatal resuscitation context. We hypothesize that short-term hyperoxia has a sex-dependent effect on the pulmonary vasculature.Following 1-h 100% O(2) exposure, the pulmonary arteries and lung tissues of newborn rats were evaluated.Superoxide dismutase 3 (SOD3) expression in female pups' lungs was increased as compared with that in the lungs of male pups. As compared with air-treated pups, the response of male pups to thromboxane was increased by O(2), …
Lung function after acute and repeated exposures to extremely cold air (-110 degrees C) during whole-body cryotherapy.
2006
Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) is one mode of cold therapy, during which rheumatic patients are exposed to very cold air (-110 degrees C) in minimal clothing. It is also proposed to have a bronchodilatory effect. The aim was to examine the effects of WBC on lung function in healthy humans after acute and repeated exposures. Twenty-five healthy, non-smoking subjects participated in the study. They were exposed to WBC for 2 min three times per week for 12 weeks. The peak expiratory flow rate (PEF) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) were measured before and after (at 2 and 30 min) the first WBC, and then similarly at 4, 8 and 12 weeks. At all time points, after 30 min of the WBC the PEF …
Delayed vs Immediate Cord Clamping Changes Oxygen Saturation and Heart Rate Patterns in the First Minutes after Birth
2020
Objective To build arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) and heart rate (HR) percentiles for the first 10 minutes after birth in term infants born after an uneventful gestation, vaginal delivery, and delayed cord clamping (DCC) for ≥60 seconds, and to compare our results with previous ones constructed after immediate cord clamping. Study design Preductal SpO2, HR, and timing of DCC immediately after complete fetal body expulsion were recorded. The pulse-oximeter was adjusted in the right wrist/hand and set at maximal intensity and measurements performed every 2 seconds. Results A total of 282 term newborn infants were included. The definitive data set comprised of 70 257 SpO2 and 79 746 HR meas…
Efficacy and one-year outcomes of Luminor® paclitaxel-coated drug-eluting balloon in the treatment of popliteal artery atherosclerosis lesions
2021
Purpose: Reporting outcomes with a new generation paclitaxel eluting balloon (Luminor®; iVascular, Vascular, S.L.U., Barcelona, Spain) in the popliteal district. Endovascular treatment of popliteal artery atherosclerotic disease is still debated without definitive evidences. Methods: From January to June 2019, patients’ data presenting popliteal artery atherosclerotic diseases and treated with the Luminor® (iVascular) drug eluting balloon (DEB) were prospectively collected. Critical limb ischemia (CLI) or severe claudication associated with popliteal artery stenosis >50% were the inclusion criteria. Measured outcomes were technical success, early and late results; including mortality, mo…
Characterization of New Organic Nitrate Hybrid Drugs Covalently Bound to Valsartan and Cilostazol
2012
Background and Purpose: Organic nitrates represent a group of nitrovasodilators that are clinically used for the treatment of ischemic heart disease. With the present studies we synthesized and characterized new organic nitrate hybrid molecules. Compounds CLC-1265 (valsartan mononitrate) and CLC-1280 (valsartan dinitrate) are derivatives of the angiotensin receptor blocker valsartan, with CLC-1265 containing a single organic nitrate linker and CLC-1280 also containing a second, different linker. Compounds CLC-2000 (cilostazol mononitrate) and CLC-2100 (cilostazol dinitrate) are nitrate derivatives of the phosphodiesterase III inhibitor cilostazol. All compounds are designed as hybrid molecu…
Acute normovolaemic anaemia prevents ethanol-induced gastric damage in rats through a blood flow related mechanism.
1994
The aim of the study was to assess whether changes in gastric mucosal blood flow induced by acute normovolaemic anaemia influence the susceptibility of the gastric mucosa to ethanol-induced damage, and the relationship of these changes with nitric oxide biosynthesis. Acute normovolaemic anaemia, promoted by exchanging 3 ml of blood by a plasma expander, induced a significant increase in gastric mucosal blood flow measured by hydrogen gas clearance, without changes in arterial blood pressure. After intragastric 60% ethanol administration, gastric blood flow was still significantly higher in anaemic than in control rats, and this was associated with a lower macroscopic and microscopic gastric…
Comparative effects of the novel vasotocin analogue F-180 vs. vasopressin and terlipressin on systemic and splanchnic isolated vessels from portal hy…
2001
F-180 has been proposed as a new vasopressin analogue for the treatment of portal hypertension. This study investigates the contractile profile of F-180 compared to vasopressin and its analogue terlipressin on isolated systemic and splanchnic vessels from sham-operated and partial portal vein ligated (PPVL) rats. F-180 (10(-9)-10(-6) M), vasopressin (10(-11)-10(-8) M) and terlipressin (10(-9)-10(-4) M) induced contraction of the mesenteric vein, aorta, iliac, tail and mesenteric arteries. The order of potency in these vessels was vasopressin (pD2 approximately 9)F-180 (pD2 approximately 8)terlipressin (pD2 approximately 6). Significant (P0.01) differences between sham-operated and PPVL rats…
The Janus face of chlorogenic acid on vascular reactivity: A study on rat isolated vessels
2016
Abstract Background Chlorogenic acid (CGA), the main polyphenol contained in coffee, is a major contributor to dietary polyphenol intake. Few studies reported its anti-hypertensive properties but the mechanisms are still indefinite. Purpose The present study assessed the direct effect of CGA in endothelium denuded or intact aortic rings from male Wistar rats and the mechanisms involved. Methods/Results CGA induced a direct endothelium-dependent relaxation that was significantly reduced by L-NAME (10 −4 M), indomethacin (10 −5 M) and combination of apamin (10 −7 M) and charybdotoxin (10 −7 M). Incubation of rings with CGA induced a dual effect on agonist-induced vasorelaxation. At 10 −6 …
Increased contraction to noradrenaline by vasopressin in human renal arteries
2002
Arginine vasopressin (AVP) not only acts directly on blood vessels through vasopressin V1 receptor stimulation but also may modulate adrenergic-mediated responses in animal experiments. The aim of the present study was to assess whether subpressor concentrations of AVP could contribute to an abnormal adrenergic contractile response of human renal arteries.Renal artery rings were obtained from 27 patients undergoing nephrectomy. The rings were suspended in organ bath chambers for isometric recording of tension.AVP (10(-10) mol/l) and the vasopressin V1 receptor agonist [Phe2, Orn8]-vasotocin (10(-10) mol/l) produced a leftward shift of the concentration-response curve to noradrenaline (half-…
