Modulatory role of magnesium on the contractile response of rat aorta to several agonists in normal and calcium-free medium.

Abstract Acute withdrawal of external Mg2+ increased basal tone of rat isolated aorta incubated in the presence of Ca2+. Above normal levels of Mg2+ (1–4 Mm) inhibited basal tone while much higher levels of the divalent cation (64–256 Mm) evoked contractile responses regardless of the presence of Ca2+. Contractile responses to noradrenaline (1μm) and KCl (80 Mm) were inhibited by addition of cumulative concentrations of Mg2+. Acetylcholine-induced contractions in the presence of physiological concentrations of Mg2+ (1 Mm) decreased gradually to the basal tone, but a sustained contraction was observed in the absence of this ion. Endoscopic stenting for postoperative biliary strictures due to hepatic hydatid disease: effectiveness and long-term outcome.

Background Postoperative strictures due to hepatic hydatid disease caused by Echinococcus surgery is considered to be a rare cause of benign bile duct strictures, especially in the Western world. Goals The aim of this retrospective study is to demonstrate possible characteristics of the strictures as well as the effectiveness of long-term endoscopic stenting. Study Between 1994 and 2001, we treated 10 of these cases in our clinic. All patients had surgery for hepatic Echinococcus disease one or more times. Modulation of adrenergic contraction of dog pulmonary arteries by nitric oxide and prostacyclin.

Abstract The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of endothelium-derived nitric oxide and prostaglandins on the contractile responses of isolated dog pulmonary arteries to electrical field stimulation and noradrenaline. Electrical field stimulation (1–8 Hz, 20 v, 0.25 ms duration, for 30 s) produced frequency-dependent contractions that were abolished by tetrodotoxin, guanethidine and, prazosin (all at 10−6 M). Noradrenaline induced concentration-dependent contractions with an EC50 of 1.85 × 10−6 M. The influence of diabetes on regulatory mechanisms and specific receptors implicated in the contractile response of isolated rabbit carotid arteries to endothelin-1 was examined. Endothelin-1 induced a concentration-dependent contraction that was greater in arteries from diabetic rabbits than in arteries from control rabbits. In this article, the authors examined whether transforming growth factor-α (TGF-α was protective in transient focal ischemia and whether alteration of cerebral circulation was involved. Abstract To examine whether low concentrations of endothelin-1 potentiate the vasocontrictor response to adrenergic stimulation, we recorded the isometric response of rings of rabbit pulmonary artery to electrical stimulation and noradrenaline. Bypass surgery in aortoiliac or aortofemoral occlusive disease can be technically demanding and hazardous due to huge calcifications and/or patient co-morbidities. We report about mid-term results of a telescoping sutureless aortic anastomosis technique using endografts as connectors to address such challenging situations. This is a single-center experience (2004–2011) in seven patients (63 ± 6 years) requiring aortoiliac (three) or aortofemoral (four) bypass surgery.
