Transverse energy distributions in nucleus-nucleus collisions at 200 GeV/nucleon

1990

Abstract The transverse energy ET distributions of nucleus-nucleus collisions are studied in the framework of a simple geometrical model. The distributions for inclusive production of J ψ and muon pairs in the mass continuum are analyzed. The shape of the ET distribution of the continuum agreed with the model. The previously oberved decrease of the ratio ( J ψ )/continuum with increasing ET is due to the behavior of the J ψ .

Study of J/$\psi$ production in p-U, O-U and S-U interactions at 200 GeV per nucleon

1991

Abstract In a search for quark-gluon plasma formation, the production of J/ψ and muon pairs in the mass continuum region is studied in oxygen-uranium and sulphur-uranium interactions. The yield of J/ψ relative to the continuum is measured to be a decreasing function of the neutral transverse energy produced in the collision, i.e. of the energy density. A comparison is made with proton-uranium reactions.

A BeppoSAX study of the Galactic Z-source GX 340+0

2004

Abstract We present the results of a BeppoSAX broad band (0.1–200 keV) observation of the Z-source GX 340+0. The 1.8–30 keV continuum is well described by a blackbody ( kT BB ∼0.5 keV) plus a Comptonized component with seed photons temperature ∼ 1 keV and electron temperature ∼ 3 keV. A hard tail dominates the spectrum above 30 keV. It can be fitted using a bremsstrahlung component or, equivalently, a powerlaw (with a low-energy cutoff). We detect also a Gaussian line at ∼6.8 keV and an absorption edge at ∼9.2 keV. A low-energy (∼1 keV) unresolved feature needs further investigations.

Neutron capture cross sections for neutron-rich isotopes

1985

Average continuum (Hauser-Feshbach) and resonance (Breit-Wigner) neutron capture rates for neutron-rich isotopes, determined on the basis of recent experimental nuclear physics input parameters, are compared to earlier theoretical reaction rates commonly used in astrophysical model computations.

STUDIES OF 12C USING β-DECAYS

2008

The nuclear structure of states in 12 C have been a subject of interest for both theory and experiment since the early days of nuclear physics. Many open questions remain, especially concerning the existence and properties of 0+ and 2+ states in the triple alpha continuum. A series of experiments have been performed using β-decay of 12 N and 12 B to probe these states. The latest experiment was performed at KVI using an implantation method, measuring the sum energy of the three α-particles directly. Preliminary results from this experiment will be presented.

Sensitivity and Efficiency of the INTEGRAL Imager

1995

A detailed simulation program of the INTEGRAL Imager has been written and implemented using the GEANT-3 Monte Carlo code. The expected detection efficiency and continuum sensitivity have been evaluated. The results obtained for the CsI configuration of the Imager are compared with those obtained with the new configuration which foresees a top plane made of CdTe solid state detector elements.

A Study of the Correlation between the Amplification of the Fe Kα Line and the X‐Ray Continuum of Quasars due to Microlensing

2006

The observed enhancement of the Fe Kα line in three gravitationally lensed QSOs (MG J0414+0534, QSO 2237+0305, and H1413+117) is interpreted in terms of microlensing, even when equivalent X-ray continuum amplification is not observed. In order to interpret these observations, first we studied the effects of microlensing on quasar spectra produced by a straight fold caustic crossing over a standard relativistic accretion disk. The disk emission was analyzed using the ray-tracing method, considering Schwarzschild and Kerr metrics. When the emission is separated into two regions (an inner disk corresponding to the Fe Kα line and an outer annulus corresponding to the continuum, or vice versa), …

First measurement of coherent ρ0 photoproduction in ultra-peripheral Xe–Xe collisions at sNN=5.44 TeV

2021

Abstract The first measurement of the coherent photoproduction of ρ 0 vector mesons in ultra-peripheral Xe–Xe collisions at s NN = 5.44 TeV is presented. This result, together with previous HERA γp data and γ–Pb measurements from ALICE, describes the atomic number (A) dependence of this process, which is particularly sensitive to nuclear shadowing effects and to the approach to the black-disc limit of QCD at a semi-hard scale. The cross section of the Xe + Xe → ρ 0 + Xe + Xe process, measured at midrapidity through the decay channel ρ 0 → π + π − , is found to be d σ / d y = 131.5 ± 5.6 ( stat . ) − 16.9 + 17.5 ( syst . ) mb. The ratio of the continuum to resonant contributions for the prod…

Search for prompt production ofχcandX(3872)ine+e−annihilations

2007

We have searched for prompt production of χc1, χc2 and X(3872) in continuum e+e- annihilations using a 386fb-1 data sample collected around s=10.6GeV with the BABAR detector using the γJ/ψ decay mode. After accounting for the feed-down from ψ(2S)→γχc1,2, no significant signal for prompt χc1,2 production is observed. We present improved upper limits at 90% confidence level on the production cross sections of 77fb for χc1 and 79fb for χc2, for events where the χc momentum exceeds 2.0 GeV and there are at least three additional charged tracks. These limits are consistent with NRQCD predictions. We also set an upper limit on the prompt production of X(3872) through the decay X(3872)→γJ/ψ. © 200…

Observation of laser-induced continuum structure in the NO molecule

1999

0953-4075; We present experimental results on the modification of a molecular ionization continuum through a laser-induced continuum structure. The effect is demonstrated in nitric oxide where the resonant 2 + 1 multiphoton-ionization process of the X (2)Pi(3/2) electronic ground state is modified by dressing the continuum with the electromagnetically embedded M(2)Sigma(+) Rydberg state. Through selection of a two-photon rovibronic transition via the D electronic state, a single rotational ground state level is excited to the continuum with one laser field. By adding an extra dressing field, a coupling is then established between this three-photon excited ground state level and one of the M…
