Development of Waste Collection Model Using Mobile Phone Data: A Case Study in Latvia
2020
In organizing household waste management and controlling waste collection and disposal, it is necessary to minimise risks to the environment and human health and, where possible, ensure that waste is recycled and returned to the economic cycle. Different models are being applied to increase waste collection management efficiency, but in recent years, the mobile phone data is widely used to solve various application problems. The research objective is to develop a waste collection model, which responds to the population’s current demands and allows planning waste container loading, based on mobile phone data statistics. The developed approach, techniques and data model can be used for waste …
Grooving by Nd:YAG laser treatment
2000
Abstract The properties of the laser beam have been used to produce deep and thin grooves in metals, melted material being removed with the assistance of a high velocity gas. Preliminary experiments show that the geometry and the location of the gas inlet tube are the main parameters governing the evacuation of the scoria. The influence of the nature of the materials on the depth of the grooves is discussed from examination of the grooves realized on various metals (copper, aluminum, titanium,…). Finally, a statistical study is performed to indicate the parameters that have to be controlled to secure regular grooves. It appears that the groove width is not too much affected by parameter var…
Covalently modified halloysite clay nanotubes: synthesis, properties, biological and medical applications
2017
Halloysite (HNT) is a promising natural nanosized tubular clay mineral that has many important uses in different industrial fields. It is naturally occurring, biocompatible, and available in thousands of tons at low cost. As a consequence of a hollow cavity, HNT is mainly used as nanocontainer for the controlled release of several chemicals. Chemical modification of both surfaces (inner lumen and outer surface) is a strategy to tune the nanotube's properties. Specifically, chemical modification of HNT surfaces generates a nanoarchitecture with targeted affinity through outer surface functionalization and drug transport ability from functionalization of the nanotube lumen. The primary focus …
Self-assembly of 2,8,14,20-tetraisobutyl-5,11,17,23-tetrahydroxyresorc[4]arene
1999
We report herein the observation of a hexameric structure of a hydroxyresorc[4]arene in the solid state, enclosing a large interior space. This artificial molecular container is stabilized only by hydrogen bonds. The tendency to form aggregates in solution is demonstrated mainly by means of ESI-MS methods.
A physical model for the interaction between unsaturated soils and retaining structures
2020
Temporary and permanent retaining structures interact with soils that are usually in unsaturated conditions. In this work, a 1g-scale physical model is presented to investigate the interactions between retaining walls and unsaturated soils. The physical model is equipped with a water-filled hydraulic cylinder connected to a pressure-volume controller to measure the horizontal component of the later earth thrust and high capacity tensiometers to measure soil matric suction. A system of low-friction linear guideways has been installed at the base of the wall-model. The failure surface is observed through a 3 cm thick glass wall on one side of the container. A series of images are acquired dur…
The role of two non-indigenous serpulid tube worms in shaping artificial hard substrata communities: case study of a fish farm in the central Mediter…
2019
Understanding the spread and establishment of non-indigenous species (NIS) is one of the primary areas of focus in bioinvasion science and is essential for generating appropriate management strategies in aquaculture. Here we investigated the role of 2 non-indigenous serpulid tube worms (Hydroides elegans and H. dirampha) in shaping the hard substrata communities around a fish farm in the Strait of Sicily over 1 yr (June 2014-June 2015), at 3 mo intervals (September and December 2014, March and June 2015). The mean density values of serpulids were significantly different at each sampling time. The density of serpulids on submerged panels showed a peak in spring (March 2015, after 9 mo) and d…
The design of waiting and storage areas to improve the efficiency of the marine intermodal terminals
2013
The correct sizing of storage areas in the port areas is aimed to optimizing the management of intermodal transport and to ensure efficiency and functionality to the entire port system. In this paper is proposed a simulation model for design the port storage areas taking into account many parameters like: the service time, the randomness of the arrivals process, the storage capacity in terms of TEU that can be stored (and handled) in the unit of time. The capacity of the terminal warehouse is determined by the interrelation between fixed and static parameters in the short period which are: i) the extension of the storage area; ii) the height of the overlapping batteries of container (define…
Development of prediction models for container traffic
2010
The purpose of the work described in this paper is to construct and implement prediction models for optimizing container handling in particular at Cagliari’s Terminal Container. Prediction models are based on heuristic algorithms such as neural networks and classification and regression trees and evolutionary algorithms such as Genetic Algorithms (GA) and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO). These models form part of a Web Oriented Decision Support System, for real time external data acquisition (GPS information, weather information, etc.), providing operators with the information processed in real time. The most commonly used parameter for assessing terminal performance is productivity, namely t…
Effects of Chinese youth consumer recycling behavior decisions : application of TPB theory to beverage container recycling system adoption
2016
Increasing municipal waste is a challenge that China is facing during decades, especially along with the economic growth. Although recycling is apparently an efficient method to deal with the problem, 2% of solid waste recycled in China revealed there is barrier in the path. The recycling system is developing in China by government and companies, hence understanding and predicting Chinese consumers’ acceptance of the system is necessary. This research is aim to understand the Chinese youth consumers’ recycling behavior through the view on beverage container recycling behavior. Hypothesizes in this study is proposed according to the theoretical framework of the TPB, which is attitude toward …
Selaimen sormenjälkitunnistamisen torjunta käyttöjärjestelmäavusteisella virtualisoinnilla
2017
Selaimen sormenjälkitunnistaminen mahdollistaa käyttäjien seurannan käyttäjien yksityisyyttä luokkaavasti. Tutkielmassa selvitetään voidaanko käyttöjärjestelmäavusteisilla virtualisointiteknologioilla vastata selaimen sormenjälkitunnistamisen torjunnan asettamiin haasteisiin. Tutkielmassa havaittiin neljä eri haastetta selaimen sormenjälkitunnistamisen torjunnalle. Tutkielma keskittyy Linux-kernelin tukemiin käyttöjärjestelmäavusteisiin virtualisointiteknologiohin, jotka mahdollistavat ohjelmistokonttien toteuttamisen. Preventing browser fingerprinting using operating system level virtualization. Browser fingerprinting enables tracking of users in a way that violates users' privacy. In this…
