Reduction of the frequency of herbaceous roots as an effect of soil compaction induced by heavy grazing in rangelands of SW Spain
2017
Rangelands in SW Spain constitute the most extensive ranching system on the Iberian Peninsula. During the last few decades, a significant increase in livestock numbers, along with a progressive substitution of cattle for sheep, have led to land degradation processes such as the reduction of grass cover and increased soil compaction in heavily grazed areas. Nevertheless, a better understanding of how soil compaction affects grass production is still needed. In this study, some of the effects of soil compaction due to heavy grazing are analysed, mainly the reduction of the frequency of herbaceous roots and its relationships with bulk density and soil penetration resistance. The study was carr…
In vivo digestibility and nutritive value of Atriplex halimus alone and mixed with wheat straw
2002
In vivo digestibility trials were carried out using six young rams fed with Atriplex halimus biomass harvested in summer (A) and in early autumn (B), and with a mixture of mid-autumn Atriplex halimus and wheat straw (5[ratio ]1 ratio on fresh matter basis) (C). Atriplex halimus had a high protein content (139·0, 135·9 and 193·4 g/kg DM in A, B and C respectively), but was rich in sodium chloride, especially in summer (145·9 g/kg DM), limiting its use as feed. The summer forage had a higher organic matter (OM) digestibility coefficient than the autumn forage (0·663 v. 0·530) but lower digestible OM intake (16·8 v. 29·4 g/day per kg BW0·75). In autumn forage, the combination with straw did no…
Influence of Nitrogen Content on Grape Non-Saccharomyces Glycosidic Activities
2019
This study investigated the influence of nitrogen content on both β-glucosidase and β-xylosidase activities from non-Saccharomyces yeasts. Enzymatic activities were induced by the presence of xylan polysaccharides in the medium. Results show that optimizing β-glucosidase and β-xylosidase enzymatic activities can be determined not only by sugar or ethanol content or pH, but also by the concentration of N in the medium. This is the first work studying the influence of N content on glycolytic enzymes produced by non-Saccharomyces yeasts.
Biosensors Applied to Quantification of Ethanol in Beverages
2019
Abstract The quality control in the processing of alcoholic beverages is major concern for producers and regulatory agencies, particularly for ethanol content which is mandatory in the label of alcoholic beverages in many countries. The use of biosensors can be of great interest in this context that usually requires laborious and costly protocols. Biosensors are composed by two principal components: the biological recognition element and the transducer. Particularly for ethanol evaluation, the use of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) or oxidase (AOX) is commonly reported in the literature which allowed the production of optical and electrochemical biosensors. These biosensors can aid in the deter…
Evaluation of Hybrid Models to Estimate Chlorophyll and Nitrogen Content of Maize Crops in the Framework of the Future CHIME Mission
2022
In the next few years, the new Copernicus Hyperspectral Imaging Mission (CHIME) is foreseen to be launched by the European Space Agency (ESA). This mission will provide an unprecedented amount of hyperspectral data, enabling new research possibilities within several fields of natural resources, including the “agriculture and food security” domain. In order to efficiently exploit this upcoming hyperspectral data stream, new processing methods and techniques need to be studied and implemented. In this work, the hybrid approach (HYB) and its variant, featuring sampling dimensionality reduction through active learning heuristics (HAL), were applied to CHIME-like data to evaluate the…
Externalism, inclusion, and knowledge of content
2003
THE CONCEPT OF COMPETENCE IN THE CONTEXT OF EDUCATION REFORM IN LATVIA
2019
The word competence is a key concept of ongoing education reform in Latvia - the ESF project “Competency approach in the curriculum” (hereafter: Project). The implementation of the idea of competence-based curriculum is related to significant changes in the structure of school and pre-school curriculum, the system of evaluation of learning outcomes, teacher education etc., which are widely clarified and discussed in expert groups and public space. Participating as experts in the development of a Project, the authors of the article find that the Latvian educational space lacks a common understanding of the meaning of the concept competence. Often the pedagogical terminology used by educators…
Case-based portraits of contrasting micro-interaction processes during online assessment of collaborative problem solving
2017
This study recognizes the role and the quality of social aspects in collaborative problem solving (CPS) processes and outcomes. The aim of this study, relying on multiple data and phases of analysis, is to explore and visualise, through contrasting case-based portraits, how micro-interaction processes at pair level evolve during CPS assessments in an online environment. The assessment is designed for a student pair in the STEM domain. The results show that in despite students’ similar CPS performance scores, variations in micro-interactions occurred across pairs. It is expected that studying these patterns at pair level may provide new insights into CPS processes and so to support acquiring…
Staying at the front line of literature: How can topic modelling help researchers follow recent studies?
2021
Staying at the front line in learning research is challenging because many fields are rapidly developing. One such field is research on the temporal aspects of computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL). To obtain an overview of these fields, systematic literature reviews can capture patterns of existing research. However, conducting systematic literature reviews is time-consuming and do not reveal future developments in the field. This study proposes a machine learning method based on topic modelling that takes articles from a systematic literature review on the temporal aspects of CSCL (49 original articles published before 2019) as a starting point to describe the most recent devel…
CLIL teachers as materials designers
2014
Vieraskielinen sisällönopetus (CLIL), jossa kouluaineita opetetaan vieraalla kielellä, on kasvattanut suosiotaan varsinkin Euroopassa. Materiaaleihin liittyvä tuki on onnistuneiden CLIL-ohjelmien edellytys. Tuki voi tarkoittaa materiaalien valmistamista, materiaalipankkien perustamista, materiaalien jakamisen tukemista tai opettajien kouluttamista materiaalien valmistuksessa. Tarvitaan tietoa pros…
