The synthesis of zeolites from dry powders
1995
Summary ZSM-5 was synthesized by different methods with a gradually decreasing water content ending in a reaction mixture with absolutely dry reagents in form of a powder in the complete absence of a solution phase. Amorphous precursors obtained by drying SiO 2 * Al 2 O 3 gels at 650°C were transformed into zeolites in the presence of dried NH 4 F and TPABr. The reaction products were characterized by XRD, REM, TG/DTA, MAS NMR and Electron Micropobe. Pure ZSM-5 or Silicalite-1 was obtained in all cases. Some water is probably formed as a reaction product, but the maximum water pressure is appreciably below the saturation pressure at the given reaction conditions. To explain the formation of…
Dithionite bleaching of thermomechanical pulp: factors having effects on bleaching efficiency
2000
The efficiency of dithionite bleaching of Norway spruce (Picea abies) thermomechanical pulp was studied by applying various multivariate data analysis techniques to analytical data (temperature, pH, ion chromatographic and energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence data). In addition, modeling the residual sulfur content of bleached pulp by means of diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectral data from laboratory-scale bleaching experiments was attempted. The results indicated that this lignin-preserving bleaching process could be evaluated by means of the analytical data using either PCR or PLS models. These models also indicated that wavelengths below 400 nm should not be used in measuring the pulp bri…
DSC study on hyaluronan drying and hydration
2011
Abstract The processes of hyaluronan (HYA) drying and hydration were studied using differential scanning calorimetry. In the first approach the isoconversional Kissinger–Akahita–Sunose (KAS) method was applied in order to determine actual activation energies of evaporation of pure water and water from concentrated HYA solutions. Since the evaporation is a single-step process, the activation energies for pure water provided results consistent with tabulated values of evaporation enthalpies. In the course of water evaporation from hyaluronan solution a break in increasing enthalpy followed by a decrease below 0.34 g of water per 1 g of HYA was observed. This result confirmed earlier observati…

Glass Transition and Food Technology: A Critical Appraisal
2002
ABSTRACT: Most low water content or frozen food products are partly or fully amorphous. This review will discuss the extent to which it is possible to understand and predict their behavior during processing and storage, on the basis of glass transition temperature values (Tg) and phenomena related to glass transition. Two main conclusions are provisionally proposed. Firstly, glass transition cannot be considered as an absolute threshold for molecular mobility. Transport of water and other small molecules takes place even in the glassy state at a significant rate, resulting in effective exchange of water in multi-domains foods or sensitivity to oxidation of encapsulated materials. Texture pr…
Influence of Initial Water Content on the Wettability of Autoclaved Soils
2010
Autoclaving is a commonly used practice to destroy microbial activity in soils but is thought to have a limited effect on other soil properties. Small changes in chemical composition have been reported, but there have been no previous reports of any alteration of physical properties. This study, however, showed that autoclaving can cause a major change in soil hydraulic properties. For samples with intermediate water contents (10-35% v/v), it caused severe or extreme water repellency in three of four soil types tested, although no effect for initially low or high water contents was found. These findings have important implications for any experimental work involving soil autoclaving as a pr…

Calcium dialysability as an estimation of bioavailability in human milk, cow milk and infant formulas
1999
Abstract The calcium dialysability of human milk, cow milk and infant formulas is estimated by applying the in vitro method (Miller, Schricker, Rasmussen, & Van Campen, (1981). American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 34, 2248–2256) slightly modified, as a measure of its bioavailability. The influence of the protein composition of infant formula samples on calcium bioavailability is also studied. Whole cow milk, a pool of human milk and 18 commercial infant formulas of 6 different types are analysed. The highest values of calcium dialysability (mg Ca/100 ml infant formula) correspond to premature (13.6) and follow-up formulas (11.8) and the lowest ones to adapted formulas (3.7); the latter v…
Chemical characterization of iron in atmospheric aerosols
1992
Abstract The total Fe content, the soluble fractions of Fe(II) and Fe(III), and several species of Fe were determined in various atmospheric aerosol samples by means of atomic absorption spectrometry, ion chromatography and Mossbauer spectrometry.
Combining land preparation and vegetation restoration for optimal soil eco-hydrological services in the Loess Plateau, China
2019
Abstract In semiarid terrestrial ecosystems, optimized eco-rehabilitation strategies, such as land preparations and planting vegetation, are keys to achieve a successful ecological restoration. Land preparations and vegetation are supposed to have the coupled and respective impacts on soil ecosystem services, which are still unclear now. In this study, eighteen experimental plots with six different combinations and repetitions of land preparations and vegetation were built in the Chinese Loess Plateau in 2014 and soil moisture storages (SMS), soil carbon stocks (SCS) and other soil nutrient stocks were calculated at 0–100 cm, also the effects of land preparations and planting vegetation on …
